Ascension Thursday – is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be celebrated this Wednesday evening
May 24 at 7:00 PM and Thursday May 25 at 8:45 AM (with our students from St. Michael School) and again at
6:00 PM. We will celebrate our Eucharistic Holy Hour as usual at 6 PM on Wednesday May 4, but it will
end with simple reposition of the Blessed Sacrament before Mass, rather than solemn Benediction.
St. Michael Basilica’s MAY DAYS are MAY 27 Sat 4PM – 8:30 PM and MAY 28 Sun 11AM 4PM NEXT WEEKEND
Please make plans to come support your parish on Memorial Day Weekend! Do you know all that May Days
supports?
 This fundraiser pays Our Lady of Loretto Community Hall loan payment. Since the hall opened in 2005, it
has been used not only as a gymnasium for the school and community, but also for: special dinners, funeral
luncheons, fundraisers, Loretto Volunteer Fire Company's events, and Bingo. We receive absolutely no
funding from any state, county or local agencies; therefore, we must rely on fees, private donations
and fundraisers. The hall is a very important asset to our community.
 May Days donates all of the proceeds from the chicken Bar-B-Que dinner to Tomorrows Hope, which
is a shelter for Veterans with medical challenges. This is a great way for our parish family to follow the
Beatitudes, reach out to those in need, and honor our Veterans!!!
Outdoor Masses/ Shrine of Our Lady of the Alleghenies - Our 7 PM Summer Sunday night Masses will
begin next weekend! We are still in need of more parishioners to volunteer to help in the weekly set up/take down
of our weekly Masses. If you missed the meeting, but would still like to sign up to help on certain weeks, please
e-mail Steve& Monica Hogue at [email protected]. This is also a good opportunity for Service Hours for
our teenagers!
Please Don’t Feed the Fish! We will be going back to a more “natural” look for the pond/fountain at the base of
the Shrine of Our Lady of the Alleghenies….and we will be adding fish! PLEASE DON’T FEED THE
FISH! It is not healthy for them and we want to enjoy them throughout the Summer!
The Parish Pastoral Council Meeting – originally scheduled for Sunday May 21at 6:30 PM is CANCELLED.
New Altar Servers – will have practice today at 9:30 AM. Future practices will be on Sunday May 28 and June 4,
11, 18, 25. New Servers will be blessed and installed at our 40 Hours Eucharistic Devotions on Monday evening
June 26 at 7PM
Memorial Day Parade and Mass - On Memorial Day, participants in the parade are to gather
at the top of town in the SFU parking lot. The parade will begin at 9:30AM. I will celebrate Mass at the outdoor
Shrine of Our Lady of the Alleghenies at 10:00AM (in case of inclement weather, inside the Basilica). We will
proceed to our cemetery for military services following Mass. Questions? Call the Loretto American Legion at
472-9966. The Parish Office is CLOSED on Memorial Day.
The New 2017 Catholic Ministries Drive- It is a new day for us in the Diocese! The great news is that there is
no longer an Annual Catholic Appeal with a parish bill/assessment attached! Instead, I invite your generosity to a
this drive which supports Catholic Charities (care for the poor and strengthening families)Formation/Education
for Youth, Future Deacons and Future Priests (care for nurturing youth, forming clergy and laity). I ask that
those families and individuals who have registered recently in the parish to join our long-time parishioners in
helping support the 2017 Catholic Ministries drive.
40 HOURS EUCHARISTIC DEVOTIONS - As I mentioned in a recent homily, more than two centuries ago,
the Servant of God, Father Demetrius Gallitzin first made it possible for our Eucharistic Lord to reside here in the
tabernacle. Father Gallitzin had great devotion to the Eucharist. In the late 1800’s, Bishop John Neumann of
Philadelphia (now St. John Neumann) made a concerted effort to spread the practice of the “Forty Hours”
Eucharistic devotion. This devotion, which had existed for some time in Europe, was described by St. Charles
Borromeo as being the length of time Jesus spent in the tomb, overnight prayer, so that Catholics could adore the
Lord in a way that helped them enter more deeply into the Paschal Mystery, over a
particular two or three days in their parish. Though the devotion had taken place
here and there in the young United States, St. John launched the formal 40 Hours
devotion in 1853 in Philadelphia, and the next parish to embrace it was St. Aloysius
in Cresson. St. Michael’s began the practice soon after. It is time to revive this
important devotion.
We will begin the 40 Hours Eucharistic Devotions following the 7 PM Outdoor
Mass on Sunday evening June 25. We will process from the Shrine with the
Blessed Sacrament into the basilica. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will
continue in the basilica all night, and all day Monday June 26, concluding with 7 PM
Sung Evening Prayer, the blessing of our new Altar Servers, and a closing procession to the Shrine of Our Lady
of the Alleghenies and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament outdoors. Celebrant for the 40 Hours will be newly
ordained Father Peter Crowe. More to COME!!!
40 Hours Hospitality for Clergy Dinner- Prior to our closing of the 40 Hours Devotions, our parish will host a
dinner for visiting clergy on Monday evening June 26 in St. Michael School Cafeteria. Sherry Lokesak has
volunteered to coordinate. We are in need of volunteers to help with cooking and serving. There will be a meeting
to plan this dinner/organize serving on Ascension Thursday evening May 25 at 7 PM in the basilica hall. Please
volunteer to help!
Come Holy Spirit! - Sunday June 4 is Pentecost Sunday, the “birth” of the Church empowered by the
Holy Spirit and the final celebration of the Easter Season. To celebrate, we would like to revive our parish
tradition to GO RED. Will you help? You are welcome to WEAR something Red (June 3 and 4) to Mass
on Pentecost Sunday! I will select new members for our Parish Pastoral Council at the Pentecost Vigil Mass.
NO 11:30 AM Confessions – on Saturday May 27. I will be concelebrating the Ordination of our two new priests
at the cathedral in Altoona.

choir member please contact Jonathan Nagy at 244-1876.
LITURGICAL REFLECTION According to the tradition in the Catholic Church, the spouses are the ministers of
Christ's grace in the Sacrament of Marriage. The man and woman mutually confer upon each other the holy
sacrament by expressing their consent before the Church. The ordained minister is the official witness of the
Church to this nuptial commitment. The spouses make a freely willed, public statement of their commitment to
one another in the name of the Lord. The Church gathers at the Sacrament of Marriage to celebrate with the bride
and bridegroom as they ground their love on the love of the Bridegroom, Christ, for his Bride, the Church. The
newly married man and woman receive sacramental grace to live out their nuptial promises.
A PAGE FROM OUR HISTORY
Seventy Years Ago - 1800 - “WHAT WE HAD”
[Pt. II] “Seventy years ago there were
pack saddles, pack horses and by-ways over the mountains, over which salt, pig iron, and store
goods, were packed.
Seventy years ago we had tinder boxes (small wooden boxes to hold
ignition items for fires), flints, steel rasps, powder and tow (dried weeds for starting fires) with
which we kindled fires.
Seventy years ago we had the flail, the sickle, the large wood fire,
wooden forks, wooden plows, wooden wagons and sleds, and lots of hard work at grubbing
(clearing the land of trees and stumps for fields and gardens), making rails, c hopping, burning
brush, and such like labor.
Seventy years ago we had two months school per year in an old
cabin, puncheon floors (log with one smoother surface), long narrow windows, greased paper lights
(paper greased to contain the light in windows or lamps), high, round wooden benches, and a
roaring wood fire.
Seventy years ago we had pine-knots, dipped or mould fallow candles (bees
wax candles made in molds), iron lamps, with hog’s lard and other contrivances for light.
Seventy years ago we had, for reading in, large prayer books, psalm books and bibles, painted in
large type, so that old people could see to read without spectacles.
Seventy years ago we had
tents for churches, preaching in the open woods, or in old round log cabins with slab seats and a
board platform for a pulpit.
Seventy years ago we had herb tea, rye coffee, home made sugar,
mush and milk, rye bread, buttermilk and cheese, pork and mutton.
Seventy years ago we had
fox hunts, militia musters and reviews, apple b utter boilings sometimes, raising (groups of
neighbors who helped raise barns, houses, etc.) , rolling frolics, scutching (step in processing of
cotton) frolics , chopping frolics, grubbing matches, and coon hunts.
Seventy years ago we
carded the wool with hand cards, spun it on wheels, kicked it thick instead of fulling it, dyed it
with barks and wore it in wamnses (?).
Seventy years ago we had linen shirts, linen dresses, tow
cloth pants (course linen work pants), linen sheets and pillow slips, linen table cloths, and home
made garments to go to church in.
Seventy years ago we had water mills, or tread mills, and
often we lived on hominy (ground corn to make grits), or pounded the grain into meal, and cooked,
or baked it in metal ovens over a wood fire.
Seventy years ago we had cabin houses, cabin
barns, cabin stables, clapboard roofs, weight poles, trees and stumps, lots of hard work, frequent
visits, plenty of strong, course food, and mannerly children. Seventy years ago Ohio was the backwoods, inhabited chiefly by Indians, as were all the other States and territories west of that region.
Oh, dear! What seventy years have done!” Rob Roy.
