Larry Schlosser High School Principal Craig Rysticken Assistant Principal 4519 Lincoln Ave (920) 793-2291 If you look at all of these questions, and relate them to school and the practice of asking questions, these would be the kinds of questions that school typically ask of students. Unfortunately, they mostly involve trivial knowledge. Only one of these questions requires a higher level of thinking. Can you figure out which question that is? One of the very positive movements in education is requiring students to engage in higher level thinking skills. How to problem solve, how to think critically. Why? Well, because of Google. We no longer have to store vast amounts of meaningless information when in seconds we can find the answer on a smart phone, a tablet, or a computer. Many teachers at the high school have incorporated high level thinking questions in their assessments, daily work, and projects and I know it is making a difference. How do I know? Students are complaining! They don’t like it because they have to think. That’s what they are telling me. While they may not like it, it is preparing them for future challenges. Across the board, assessment systems, whether it be for entrance to college or to enter a technical career, are changing to these kinds of questions. The demands are changing and we have to be able to respond to those changes. So, when you hear your child complaining, it just might be a good thing. STUDENT SERVICES Freshmen parents received a letter several weeks ago about setting up an appointment to meet with their child's counselor for an Individual Learning Plan. The purpose is for student's and their parents to become familiar with many resources available to help students plan for their future career. College has become expensive so taking advantage of certain opportunities now can help students be more certain of their career choice thus possibly cutting down on time in college later on. In addition the counselors explain many options to earn credits while still in high school so they need to take and pay for fewer credits in college. Although some students may claim they are not interested in college, the counselors will also explore ideas for preparing for the world of work beyond high school. Classes for next year will be selected as well as developing a four year plan. Every year the cost of college increases. There are many resources available to help pay for college whether a student plans to do the traditional four year plus plan or a nine month certificate from a local technical school. Mrs. Luedtke will be meeting with all seniors the first 15 minutes of any hour that is convenient for the student on Friday December 11 in the Student Services office except fourth and seventh hour when she will be meeting with them in Mr. Feest's Consumer Ec classes. She will give them details on the Two Rivers High School Scholarship as well as other scholarships. This will give them time to work on the scholarship over Christmas break. The scholarship will be due in February. Please remind your child to stop in to get this valuable information. She is also planning to have two scholarship "boot camps" from 3:00 to 4:00on January 7 and 21. Students will be able to work on their scholarships and get help from staff on how to make the best presentation of the TRHS scholarship as well as other scholarships. Students should check the student services webpage weekly for updates on other scholarships. By now seniors have met with their counselors to make final plans for postgraduation. It is recommended that college applications be completed by this time. If your son or daughter has not yet done this have them see their counselor soon to complete this process. Throughout the year the Student Services Department becomes aware of many opportunities for students to job shadow, plan for their future, earn college credits while still in high school, attend pre-college classes, be involved in congressional aide positions, and many workshops that develop leadership skills. Information is usually forwarded to students via their school email accounts so please have your child check email regularly.
