Place Value Review Students should review the below information and be familiar with how to write numbers in various ways, compare numbers, order numbers and be able to explain their process in order to reach mastery. They may use the PEACE flow map model to help explain their work. Samples of this are listed below. Standard form: 76,356 Expanded form: 70,000 + 6,000, + 300 + 50 + 6 Word form: seventy six thousand, three hundred fifty six Write the following numbers in word form: a. 5,623 b. 30,301 c. 983,416 Write the following numbers in standard form: a. Twenty three thousand, four hundred sixteen b. 500,000 + 20,000 + 4,000 + 600 + 90 +8 c. Four hundred fifty nine thousand, two hundred twenty two Write the following numbers in expanded form: a. Nine thousand, six hundred and twenty nine b. 87,352 c. 295,945 *** Students should be able to explain how and why they wrote each value. See next page for an example. P I am going to write a number in expanded form. E I will use my place value chart to find the value of each number. A I filled in the rest of the columns with zeros to show the value of each number. A I drew a place value chart and placed the numbers from my numeral in the correct spots on the chart. C I know I am right because I checked my work by writing it a second way and the numbers lined up into the original number I was expanding. Value – the amount that a number is worth. For example, in the number 4,578, the 4 is worth 4,000. Place Value – The place on the place value chart that the number is in. Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands or hundred thousands. ***Students should also be able to write numbers in order from least to greatest and greatest to least and compare two numbers with these symbols. <, >, =. They should also be able to explain how and why they ordered the numbers as they did. P E I am going to compare two numbers. A Once I have found two digits that are different, I decide which one is bigger and write that number down. I continue this process until I have ordered the numbers correctly. A I will use my knowledge of the place value chart to decide which number is bigger. I start by comparing the first digits in both numbers. If they are the same, I compare the next two digits. C I know I am right because I checked my work by writing it a second way and comparing each place value.
