beginner class if they are ready.
It is a fact that puppies need to have social skills. They do not come to us already trained, social, and
well behaved.
A time known as the "Critical Period" is a part of every pups life. It's hard to imagine a cute little furry
puppy can grow to be an aggressive, rude bully. Without the proper social skills it can happen and
does more often than you'd think. To avoid that, every owner needs to work on helping their puppy
learn these Important skills in a positive and safe environment.
Diann is a certified dog trainer with a behavior background in dog development skills, and is there to
help every step of the way. Interactions with owners and other people in class is an important part of
puppy skills and should be done as early as possible. This is the time in their life they need to
understand not to be fearful, learn to read and understand other dog's body language, how to initiate
play, when another dog say's to them "NO." Skills they will use their entire lives. They are only
puppies once, and time goes to fast. Puppy Social Class For beginners is focused on helping the
pups and their owners.
Learn how to calm your puppy if he get's to rowdy, learn how to read and understand if they are
fearful, and most of all it is so much fun to watch a group of playful happy puppies having the best
time. Bring the whole family. The more people puppies meet, the better. AND; you get to go home
with a tired, happy puppy!!!!!!!!!!

Puppies have a 2nd Critical Period ranging from 9 months to one year or more; with each
pup being different in their time frame. If the social skills from earlier in their life aren't
kept up, they can regress very quickly. It seems sometimes overnight.
As your puppy gets older, many times they "THINK" they have to much "Power" and can
become a bully very quickly. This social class is focused on helping them learn better dog
manners and get through their 2nd fear period, have a great time and meeting new dog
friends. You want your puppy to be as social to people as they will be to other dogs.
It's not any fun having a full grown dog that is fear aggressive of people or dog's. Bring
your whole family, even older puppies need to meet and greet new people. Graduates of

not aware of?
.Big box stores; Pet Boutiques; Retail Stores, they all sell delicious, mouth-watering, paw
licking treats aimed at enticing YOU. Your dog is attracted to the scent and taste of a food
item, not the shape or color, and certainly not a cute little name wrapped in a glitzy package.
The leading brands of pet treats - sell on creative marketing, bag graphics, brand identity or
attractive pricing. Are they worth the price??? NO. The sharp rise in pet illness may be
attributed to tasty morsels that contain unhealthful ingredien ts.
Fortunately, today's pet owners demand healthier treats. In response to that
demand, companies are beginning to incorporate natural and/or organic
ingredients into the treats
New treats from Dog Gone Natural are by far superior then many items in the supply chain.
These tasty morsels are made in Kentucky with the proteins sourced from local farms. They
smoke the meats in their own facility with American labor and a strict code of quality and no
chemicals or synthetics! Great Life Performance Pet Products are the exclusive
distributor for these delicious and healthy treats. You can locate them at greatlife4pets.com.
or contact Diann for order details.
Still, you need to be vigilant and avoid the following ingredients:
Propylene glycol- an industrial solvent used in acrylics, stains, inks, dyes,
cellophane, antifreeze, airplane de-icers and brake fluid. Side effects on animals
include: irregular heart beat, underdeveloped growth, brain, liver and kidney failure,
lowering blood pressure and even death. Pets love the sweet taste.
ARTIFICIAL COLORING
Blue 1 and 2- found in pet foods and treats; these have caused brain tumors
and should be avoided.
Red 3- is a cause of thyroid tumors.
Yellow 6- Linked to adrenal gland and kidney tumors; it is really a
carcinogen.
ADDITIVES AND SYNTHETICS
BHA or BHT- Many studies have proven the use of this widely used chemical to be a cause
of cancer in rats.
Propyl galate- is a preservative used to prevent spoiling but has been linked to
cancer.
Ethoxyquin- is perhaps the most widely used chemical and the most dangerous. Not only
does it cause many forms of cancer, but it has been linked to mutations of genes that suppress
cancer. It has been banned as an "additional" additive in dog foods and treats but it is allowed
to be used in formulas or recipes with further mention on the packaging! That's sneaky and
dangerous. Ethoxyquin
Is allowed to be used in exotic bird formulas-read what's in those seed mixes for Polly and
Pedro Parrott!
Potassium Bromate- has been banned throughout the world, except for the United States
and Japan. It is used in flours and causes renal cancers as well as some forms of lung cancer
and we wonder why young women who have never smoked are dying from lung cancer!
Acesulfame-K is a chemical sweetener used in human food and pet foods. Sweetness attracts

all mammals which is why it is tossed into the food. In controlled studies, this
chemical caused cancer! These cancers included lung tumors and breast
tumors), various types of leukemia and chronic respiratory disease in the
animals.
Partially Hydrogenated Oils- is a butter replacement in the food industry but
it is very high in trans-fats which promote heart disease and diabetes.
Poultry by-product meal is a high-protein ingredient used as a major component in some
dog foods and treats. It is made from grinding clean parts of poultry cadavers, which can
contain bones, offal and undeveloped eggs. It also can contain feathers. May be hard to digest
but worse than that-you just don't know what it is!
Meat by-product meal- is a substandard form of protein, used by many popular pet
food and treat manufacturers because it is cheap. Sources may include: road kill,
euthanized cats and dogs, including their collars. Don't forget, the drugs that were used to
euthanize the pets are still there.
Brown Sugar / sugar/ molasses- some of the effects of sugar in pets are- suppression of the
immune system, mineral imbalance, hyperactivity, diabetes, kidney distress, weight gain,
allergies, excessive pancreatic activity, liver activity, increase in bad bacteria in the colon,
and sugar is an important nutrient for cancer cells-they thrive on sugar !
Additional items to be wary of: Remember, all this & more can be found
in some pet foods.
ground wheat (linked to allergies), corn gluten meal, wheat four, ground
yellow corn, sugar glycerin, hydrogenate starch hydrolysis, bacon fat
preserved with BHA, soybean meal, salt, sorbic acid (a preservative),
artificial flavor, calcium propionate (a preservative), blood ( animal plasma- can come from
any animal- can have toxic elements), glyceryl monostearate, phosphoric acid, added color
(Red 40, Yellow 5).
Hard to believe these are products many feed their pets with out a 2nd thought. Just because
it's on the bag, does not mean it belongs in the pet food.

10 of 21 Dog Foods Mislabeled, Recent Testing Shows
The FDA's Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) calls for truth in labeling for
pet foods as well as human foods.
So... are the labels on the pet food you purchase accurate?
This question, posed recently in an industry trade journal article, was
actually aimed at pet food manufacturers. The reason for the query,
according to PetfoodIndustry.com:
http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?ca=3c925a41-0690…-11e2-8ebb-d4ae528e486a&ch=f5ef2250-f51e-11e2-8ebb-d4ae528e486a
Page 7 of 10

"Unintentional mislabeling, especially with protein sources and gluten
content, is not uncommon."
I'm sure this news is alarming to those of you who buy commercial pet
food for your dog or cat. Increasingly, pet parents are carefully reading
ingredient labels to insure the products they offer their furry family
members are not only high quality, but also free of ingredients that
could be problematic or dangerous for their pet
21 Dog Foods Tested to Validate Accuracy in Labeling
Fortunately, a recent amendment to the FFDCA, the Food Safety
Modernization Act (FSMA) seeks to increase the responsibility of food
importers and producers to verify the safety and authenticity of the grains and
proteins used in their products.
This accountability is especially important when it comes to animal proteins
and grains in commercial pet food, as became obvious recently during a
survey of dog foods by the ELISA Technologies laboratory in Florida.
Twenty-one dog food formulas were purchased, 10 from local grocery stores
and 11 from local specialty pet stores. Five of the foods claimed to be glutenfree. The remaining 16 formulas were a mix of large and small brands of dog
food.
All 21 formulas were ELISA tested for gluten and animal proteins derived
from beef, pork, poultry, turkey, sheep, horse and deer. The results of those
tests were then compared to the ingredient labels on the corresponding
packages of dog food
The Result: 10 of 21 Dog Foods Mislabeled
8 formulas tested positive for an animal protein not listed
on the ingredient label, with 2 foods containing
undeclared beef or sheep, 5 containing pork, and 1
containing deer
2 foods labeled as containing venison tested negative for
deer, but instead contained beef, sheep or pork
2 foods labeled as containing "meat and bone meal" rather than a
specific protein source tested positive instead for pork, but because
pork can be considered meat, these formulas were not technically
mislabeled
12 formulas listed no gluten source on the label and 5 were labeled
either gluten-free or grain-free, however 5 of the 12 - including 2
labeled gluten- or grain-free - contained gluten at greater than 80 ppm,
a level much higher than the FDA's limit of 20 ppm to qualify for
labeling as gluten-free in human food
What This Means for You as a Pet Owner
According to PetfoodIndustry.com, "As in the human food
http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?ca=3c925a41-0690…-11e2-8ebb-d4ae528e486a&ch=f5ef2250-f51e-11e2-8ebb-d4ae528e486a
Page 8 of 10
5/20/15, 9:29 AM
industry, this type of mislabeling is typically not
intentional on the part of the
manufacturer. Rather, it is most often
the result of mistakes during
formulation or the receipt of
mislabeled product from a supplier."
I guess this is the good news - that most pet food
manufacturers don't intentionally mislabel their products.
However, it's small comfort to people who have pets with
allergies to wheat or other
grains, or who are being fed a
novel protein diet to address
food sensitivities or a serious
condition like inflammatory
bowel disease.
If you're concerned about
whether the ingredients in your
pet's food match what is claimed on the label, you can try
contacting the manufacturer to ask how and how often they
verify the authenticity of their ingredients.
If you really want to put them to the test, you can ask if
they apply "hazard analysis and critical control point"
(HACCP) procedures to avoid product adulteration and
contamination. A few questions you can ask include:
Do you require your ingredient suppliers to verify
the source, type and species content of grains and
meals, including results of any testing performed?
Do you check the quality of new suppliers by
carefully examining their products and testing them
as necessary?
The bottom line? Out of 21 dog foods tested, 10 were mislabeled, two of
which had more than one labeling inaccuracy
Another option for those of you worried about commercial pet food
ingredients is to feed your dog or cat species-appropriate meals from your
own kitchen with fresh ingredients you select. If you decide to go this route,
remember that balanced nutrition is crucially important when preparing
homemade pet meals
