Candy Cane Moles “Sweet” Lab
Purpose:
To determine the number of molecules of sugar consumed over a certain period of time
and the number of molecules of sugar consumed in one lick.
Materials:
1 candy cane, balance, weighing paper
Procedure:
1. Obtain a candy cane from your wonderful teacher (be sure to thank her)
2. Unwrap and find the mass of the candy cane. (Put weighing paper on the pan of the
balance first)
3. Enjoy (lick) your candy cane for 3 minutes and count the number of licks you take.
Note the time you start and stop.
4. Recall the formula of sucrose: _____________________
5. Calculate the molar mass of the sucrose.
6. Find the final mass of the candy cane.
Observations:
