We'll start a new unit.
How many feet is it
across the 48 states?
I don't know. Probably alot.
15,280,000 ft
That's 15 million, 280 thousand
feet. Of course, it's rounded.
15,280,000 ft
Wow! The US is big. How
are you going to measure that?
Miles
I'm sure you've heard of them.
Miles
Sure. My dad tells me how
he walked 5 miles to school.
Uphill both ways, I bet.
In 3 feet of snow.
So, how many feet is a mile?
1 mile is 5,280 feet
That's why a mile is so far.
5,280 feet?
I don't want to count all that.
How many miles across the US?
3,000 miles
across the USA.
Of course, I rounded it off.
How miles around the world?
26,000 miles
around the world.
Yeah, 26,000 miles is along ways.
Here's a good one. About
how fast does sound travels?
Sound travels
about 767 mph.
So, a jet has to travel faster than
that to break the sound barrier.
How fast do I walk per hour?
People walk about
3 to 5 miles in an hour.
We use miles alot
more than people imagine.
1 mile = 5280 feet
Do people
use rounding with miles?
Round to 5,000 feet.
Here's a good one. We'll use
the highest point in the world.
29,000 ft
Mt Everest is about 29,000 ft tall.
How do you find that in miles?
Round
29,000 to 30,000
Round 29,000 to 30,000.
About how many miles
is 30,000 ft?
30,000
5000 = 6
6 miles? Wow! That's really tall.
30,000
5000 = 6
It's about 6 miles.
I have 1 more problem
I think you'll like.
120,000 ft
Woe, that is a big number.
What is 120,000 feet long?
120,000 ft
Felix Baumgartner set a new record
when he jumped from 120,100 feet.
120,000 ft
Did he have a parachute?
Because he's dead if he doesn't.
120,000 ft
Yes, he had a parachute.
So, estimate how many miles it is.
120,000 5000
24 miles
Divide 120 by 5 is 24.
24 miles!!! That's out in space.
120,000 5000
24 miles
They call it near space.
Here's the real answer.
120,000 5280
22.7 miles
So, it's more like 23 miles
instead of 24. Is that a big deal?
120,000 5000
24 miles
22.7 mi
Big enough that I wanted
you to know about it.
120,000 5000
24 miles
22.7 mi
So, what does that mean?
Estimating
Estimating is nice to use,
but it has it's limits.
Over 70 or 80,000, it makes a
difference. There is more to this.
Qs
A mile is how many feet?
1 mile is 5,280 feet
1 mile is 5,280 feet
What does it round to?
Round to 5,000
It estimates many feet into miles.
Chapter 1 Lesson 3a
Inch, Foot, Yard, and Miles
Count 10ths of a mile.
You know, this is one of
my favorite lessons in units.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Smaller than a Mile
We estimated many miles.
Now it's less than a mile.
Smaller than a Mile
Why would that
be your favorite lesson?
5,000 ft
I like it because it's
used alot in the real world.
Using 5000 ft, how many feet
would be in a 10th of a mile?
500 ft
1 tenth of a Mile
That's because 10 x 500 is 5000.
500 feet is like a 10th of a mile.
500 ft
10th of a Mile
We'll try one using that.
Here's a problem for it.
1500 ft = ? miles
About what part of a
mile would 1500 feet be?
1500 ft = ? miles
I'd say you just count
500 for every 10th of a mile.
1500 ft = 0.3 miles
Right, count by 500s
makes it 3 10ths of a mile.
1500 ft = 0.3 miles
Wow. I didn't know you
could do that with miles.
6,500 ft = ? miles
Start off with whole miles,
but use the rounded one.
6,500 ft = ? miles
5,000 ft = 1 mile
1 mile is 5,000 ft rounded.
Do you subtract it?
6,500 ft = 1. ? miles
5,000 ft = 1 mile
1,500
Subtract is 1500 feet.
Count how many 10ths that is.
6,500 ft = 1.3 miles
5,000 ft = 1 mile
1,500
It's about 1 and 3 10ths miles.
Is that how cars use it?
Right, cars use 10ths,
but they don't round it.
I'll make another problem.
2.4 miles = ? feet
We'll go backwards.
About how many feet are
in 2.4 miles?
2.4 miles = ? feet
2 miles = 10,000 ft
2 miles x 5000 is 10,000 feet.
So, how many feet
are in 4 10ths of a mile?
2.4 miles = ? feet
2 miles = 10,000 ft
0.4 miles = 2,000 ft
Each 10th of a mile is 500 ft.
Multiply 4 x 500 is 2000.
How many feet in all?
2.4 miles = 12,000 ft
Add it is 12,000 feet.
When would they use that?
2.4 miles = 12,000 ft
Airport runways is another one.
I'll try another one with 10ths.
1.7 miles
A military runway is 1.7 miles
long. How many feet is that?
1.7 miles = ? ft
1 mile = 5000 ft
Easy cheezy sneezy.
1 mile is 5,000 feet.
Now it's feet in 7 10ths of a mile.
1.7 miles = ? ft
1 mile = 5000 ft
0.7 miles = 3500 ft
Each 10th of a mile is 500 ft.
Multiply 7 x 500 is 3500.
I can finish that.
1.7 miles = 8,500 ft
Add them makes 8,500 feet.
It's weird how miles uses decimals.
5000 ft in a mile

10
500 ft
That's the power of rounding.
5000 ft in a mile
1

10
500 ft
I'm thinking a mile is a long ways.
Trust me, it's alot longer if you're
walking than if you're driving.
Qs
How do you round a mile?
5000 feet = 1 mile
About how many
feet are in a 10th of a mile?
1 tenth mile = 500 ft
A 10th of a mile is about 500 feet.
Chapter 1 Lesson 3
Inch, Foot, Yard, and Miles
Short Lesson
Rounding with miles.
Miles
How many feet are in 1 mile?
1 mile is 5,280 feet
About how many miles it is
across the continental USA?
3,000 miles
across the USA.
Of course, it's an estimate.
How miles around the world?
26,000 miles
around the world.
That's at the equator.
Yes, it's along ways.
1 mile is 5,280 feet
To make it easier to use feet
with miles we'll round it off.
1 mile is 5,280 feet
5,000 feet
So, 1 mile is about 5000 feet.
Here's 1 way to use it.
Round to 5,000 feet
29,000 ft
Mt Everest is about 29,000 ft tall.
Find how many miles it is.
What do you round 29,000 to?
30,000
5000 = 6 mi
Round 29,000 to 30,000
Mt Everest elevation is about
6 miles tall counting from sea level.
There is another way to use it.
1
mile
10
500 ft
A tenth of a mile is about 500 ft.
Here's a problem for it.
2.3 miles = ? ft
Estimate the feet in 2.3 miles.
We'll make it a 2 step problem.
How many whole miles is it?
2 mi = 10,000 ft
0.3 =
2.3 mi =
2 miles is about 10,000 ft.
How many feet in 0.3 miles?
2 mi = 10,000 ft
0.3 = 1,500 ft
2.3 mi =
3 tenths of a miles is 1500 ft.
So, what is it in all?
2 mi = 10,000 ft
0.3 = 1,500 ft
2.3 mi = 11,500 ft
2.3 miles is about 11,500 ft.
12,500 ft
Estimate the miles in 12,500 feet.
Start off by finding the whole miles.
12,500 ft
10,000 ft
2,500 ft
2 miles
2.5 miles
2,500 feet is half a mile.
Find the whole miles and part left.
12,500 ft
10,000 ft
2,500 ft
2 miles
?
10,000 feet is 2 miles.
2,500 feet is how much of a mile?
1500 ft
How many 10ths
of a mile are 1500 feet?
1500 ft
3
mile
10
Count by 500s
makes 3 10ths of a mile.
So, we have
3 ways to use miles as feet.
