Constitution Week - Ohio Society Daughters of the American

Ohio Society
Daughters of the American Revolution
Volume 2 Issue 5
December 2014
From the Desk of the State Regent
It appears winter arrived early in Ohio! Where I live, we had a beautiful
snow followed a few days later by freezing rain, pretty normal in Ohio, but not
in mid-November. Makes me wonder if we are in for lots of weather surprises
as this year winds down and the new year begins.
This is a busy time in the chapter year with a number of deadlines to be
met. Your dues should have been sent in December 1 to NSDAR and OSDAR.
Members whose dues are delinquent are ineligible to vote. (NSDAR Bylaws
Article 4, Section 2 (e).) This is very important as you select your delegates for
upcoming state and national meetings.
The Chapter Master Report, formerly Master Questionnaire and Chapter Achievement Award Form, should be started by now. Our deadline to have
this award completed electronically is January 25. This is a little ahead of last
year, but remember you are only filing one report, not two, so with a cooperative effort from your officers and chairmen this should be easily accomplished.
Check the deadlines listed in the SIP or contact State Corresponding Secretary
Cindy Weaver with questions.
There were two very special chapter celebrations that I attended last
month. Columbus Chapter, Barbara Howison, Regent, celebrated 115 years of
DAR service and the Catharine Greene Chapter, Kay McIntire, Regent, celebrated 120 years. What a privilege to attend these celebrations and witness the
dedication of these Ohio Daughters to chapters with histories lasting over so
many years.
Now I need to brag a bit about our outstanding State Board of Management. Teachers never seem to get over the habit of taking attendance and I was
pleasantly surprised to find all but two of the members of the State Board present at the Columbus Chapter Anniversary. I find their commitment to travel to
our chapters to be outstanding. These hardworking officers are always available
to work with chapters and members, offering help where needed. If you have
not taken advantage of their willingness to come to your chapter and their expertise, please remedy the situation. They are delightful to work with and their
love of DAR shines through.
May there be many blessings in your lives through the month of December. Wishing you great fellowship, holiday fun, and fabulous family gatherings. Stay safe. Stay warm. I’ll be back in 2015!!

Scripture to Consider:
"When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like
a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me."
(1 Corinthians 13:11 NIV)
Inspirational Message ~ Holiday Greetings!
I wish each and every one of you a season of joy with family and friends at this special time of year.
It is a season of love, merrymaking and giving.
For me, being a Christian, the Birth of Christ is a fascinating story that will never grow old! The
scripture above and many others come to mind every Christmas season. Of course, as a child and
teen I was excited about the gifts I might receive. In time, that became less of a focus. As I grew
older, I became tired of and frustrated with the commercialism that totally dominated everyday living
in the month of December and made Christmas experiences secular.
I enjoy sitting and opening Christmas cards on Christmas Eve, playing old Christmas records in December, hearing familiar traditional hymns at church, reading the Biblical accounts of the miraculous birth, and watching well known movies like: Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Carol and It's
a Wonderful Life which help me remember Christmases of the past. Actually, these type of memories are the ones which I try to share with my grandson so he will have a sense of Christmas memories in addition to the latest 'gizmo' and soon outdated electronic 'gadget' gifts he receives.
All in all, my hope is: that whatever you most treasure about the month of December you will make
time to enjoy in the days ahead! And, this holiday season, may you have peace of mind in everything and the spirit of joy in your heart!
If you are feeling sad because loved ones are being missed for the first time this year, I hope you
will be comforted by remembering the times that brought you happiness in the years past. I'd like to
suggest the book~"When Holidays Hurt: Finding Hidden Hope Amid Pain and Loss" by Bo Stern; I
have heard it is very good and intend to read it next month.
May God Bless America, you, your family, and our DAR sisters in love, loyalty and friendship everywhere this holiday season!
Please join me in my prayer focus~
Heavenly Father, may the days ahead bring each of us closer to our faith and our families. May our
days be filled with love and appreciation for those we hold most dear and your ever-present love.
In Your Holy Name we pray, Amen.

Hazardous Material!!!
Officers and Chairmen need to check all forms, NSDAR and OSDAR, to make sure they are using
current and up to date forms before sending to NSDAR or OSDAR. Forms change and are updated with
each administration. Addresses for officers and chairmen, to whom they are sent, change. Please make
sure you are using the current form.
You risk having dues payments received late because the information was sent to the wrong address. Your chapter members must be in good standing, i.e. their dues were paid on time, to be eligible to
serve as delegates to State Conference and Continental Congress. You risk having contest participants’ entries be declared ineligible if you use the wrong form as topics and criteria change.
Where do you find up-to-date forms? The State Information Packet (SIP) has forms. Chapter Regents should have a copy or you can download it from the members’ website. Your OSDAR members’
website has links to forms, both state and national. Contact the officer or chairman directly if you are unsure you have the right form.
Look at your files. If a form is from 2004-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12 or earlier, throw it out.
Better yet, recycle it and mention under the Conservation Committee on the Chapter Master
Report that you recycled all forms from prior administrations.
Old forms have incorrect information. To receive proper credit for chapter activities, current forms
MUST be used.
Constitution Week
If you haven't had a Constitution Sidelight, or recited the Preamble at one of
your meetings, you still have time at your December meeting to do so.
Regents - Add the reciting of the Preamble to your December meeting
agenda. Constitution Week Chairman - present a Constitution Sidelight at your December meeting,
then go to the Chapter Master Report and give your chapter credit under the Constitution Week
Committee page.
And remember, if your chapter has activities for Constitution Week that you would like to present in
a scrapbook, your chapter could win the Scrapbook Contest for Constitution Week. The scrapbooks will be on display at State Conference. Please send all Constitution Week Scrapbooks to
your State Chairman by January 15, 2015, to be eligible for the Contest.
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions regarding Constitution Week.
I have seen some of your reports and pictures and am excited about the
participation for Constitution Week. Thanks to all the Regents, chairmen,
and chapters for your dedication and hard work.

The First Snowfall of the Winter-already?
Many of us have already experienced snow, long ahead of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
This is a good time to redirect membership focus for chapters. Keep contacts current for
prospective members with a cheery holiday note. Invite them personally to your December
chapter meeting.
Wintertime is excellent for doing genealogical research and extending help to chapter
prospective members. Unless you are an outdoor lover, put cemetery site research on hold until springtime. I have had personal experience with this.
Santa and the Thanksgiving Turkey sent your Membership Chairman early gifts of enthusiasm and dedication of many Ohio chapters. This will be reflected in the OSDAR membership increase. The final figures will be available after the first of 2015, just in time for the new
MQ and CA form.
This chairman is thankful for all the volunteer efforts of the chapters. I enjoy helping
you and hearing your successful ideas in promoting our Society.
Contact me anytime at [email protected] It gives me a respite from the holiday
festivities.
I wish you all a blessed holiday season and renewed enthusiasm for 2015. It’s a joy to
work with all the OSDAR chapters.

Special Project Grants
Submitted by Becky Underhill, Chairman
Did you see the vet who returned from serving his country but not in the same shape as when he left? Does that
veteran need a guide dog or some other kind of help? A Special Project Grant could be the answer.
Did you hear of the needs of the music class at the inner-city
school needing instruments or maybe the history teacher looking
for resources to help her bring American history to life for her
students? Maybe even internet service is needed for a rural
school. There may be a Special Project Grant for that.
Have you talked among yourselves about the old cemetery with
the beautiful old headstones in desperate need of repair, or the
historic building in need of a new roof? Yea, Special Project
Grants could take care of that too.
Look around your community. Hear what is needed at your
schools, libraries, and historical societies. Talk about what can be done.
For more information on the DAR Special Project Grants, go to the National website under committees and find
Special Project Grants. There you will find ideas, instructions, and forms.
If you need more help or want to talk to someone about ideas please
give me a call at 740-404-0435 or email me at

Book Sync Project
Dear Daughters,
The Genealogical Records Committee (GRC) is currently seeking volunteers for the Book Sync
Project.
The Book Sync Project was launched in 2014 to fix a discrepancy that occurred when the volumes
in the GRC collection were digitized. When the collection was digitized in 2008, several pages
needed to be added in front of each volume to help catalog and track the digitized volume. The addition of the pages threw off the Every Name Index. At present, the page number associated with a
name does not display the correct digitized page image.
Volunteers for the Book Sync Project synchronize the name in the index to the appropriate page in
the volume, using their computers at home. The Book Sync Project is very easy to do, requires very
little data entry, and goes quickly.
The GRC National Chair, Susan Tillman, challenges each state to sync 360 volumes this year. The
tallying will begin August 1, 2014, and will end on June 1, 2015. Certificates will be presented at the
124th Continental Congress to those states whose volunteers have collectively synced at least 100
volumes during this time period. Ladies, let’s spread some excitement about this project, volunteer
our time, and bring home a certificate!
For more information or to volunteer please see the Genealogical Records Committee page on the
DAR members’ website. Here is a link to a short video that explains how to sync the indexed name
to the image: http://screencast-o-matic.com/u/n1jl/booksync.
You may also contact Pam Stinehart, GRC State Chair at [email protected] or 614-286-7956
for more information or assistance.
Thank you,

SERVICE FOR VETERANS DECEMBER THOUGHTS
SUBMITTED BY LORA STAATS
As I read the recent Daughters magazine I found that our DAR Service for
Veterans Committee’s National Chair, Suzanne Earing, said it well. “What better
time to express your support and appreciation to our hospitalized veterans than
during the holiday season?” Many of these hospitalized veterans will have no
family to visit them or to send them holiday messages of good cheer. This holiday season, you can make a
donation to the Veterans Holiday Gift Program at your local VA medical center. Please contact your Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Representative or the VAVS office for more information about making
a donation or sponsoring a patient activity. Christmas cards, signed by DAR members, can be donated to
your VAVS office of each facility and will be distributed to the men and women in the hospital. In-kind donations that are needed are comfort items, hats, gloves, and scarves. Also needed are brushes, combs,
Forever stamps, phone cards, and crossword puzzles and word search books. Group activities are also
considered in-kind donations. When we brighten the day of another we feel brighter within ourselves.
Help to brighten the Holidays for a veteran.
The deadline for DAR Service for Veterans Committee Awards is December 15, 2014. All nominations must reach me by that date. This committee sponsors three awards: Outstanding Veteran Volunteer
Award, Outstanding Youth Award, and Outstanding DAR Service for Veterans Award. Full instructions for
the process and forms can be found on the NSDAR Website. As you support your Service for Veterans
committee and participate in activities, please remember to take pictures and send them to me. I have
enjoyed the pictures and emails you have sent to me and I will send them in with my annual report which
will be read by the East Central Division Director.
May you all have a wonderful Christmas and enter safely into a New Year!
Only a Few Rooms Left on the 2015 Ohio Bus to Continental Congress
Only a few rooms are left at the State Plaza Hotel in the Ohio block of rooms. Even if
you do not have a roommate, we can place you with another OSDAR member/s. At
this time, we are also taking reservations for either a room only if you plan to travel
independently or the bus only if you have made reservations at another location.
Please contact either of us for the registration forms or email us directly with questions.
The Ohio Bus will again leave on the Monday (June 22nd) prior to the opening of Congress and return on
Sunday (June 28th). Visit the Members website for announcements and information from NSDAR—

Patriotic Panties
I’m not sure that the four founders of DAR, when they stated that one of the goals of our organization would be
patriotism, were thinking of the Great OSDAR Panty Raid for women veterans. Nonetheless, I consider what
the Ohio Daughters have accomplished a great act of patriotism, compassion, and generosity. In the short time
of approximately 2 ½ months we collected a total of 2,122 pairs of panties and $720. At this writing most of the
panties have been distributed to the women veterans in the VA facilities and the VAVS offices are so appreciative!
All monies donated have been given to the OSDAR Treasurer and checks will be written to the VA facilities to
be used for miscellaneous items needed by the women veterans. Originally the plan was to purchase more
panties, but since Ohio Daughters were so generous with your overwhelming response to our project, we
thought the money should be used at the discretion of the VAVS office for the women veterans at each facility.
One of the characteristics of patriotism is love of country and appreciation to those who step forward to defend
it. The Ohio Daughters truly acted as patriots in supporting this projectI. Thank you for all you have done for
our women veterans.
Lora Staats, DAR Service for Veterans Chairman
Jan Augenstein, Womens Issues Chairman
Women’s Issues Essay Contest
Jan Augenstein
2013 was a record breaking year for the Women’s Issues Essay Contest. I received more entries than
had ever been received in one year in Ohio! But what a difficult job it was for the judges to decide on winners because of the
excellent quality shown in each entry.
This year in 2014 I’m certain we can give the judges another difficult job! And I would love to see even more entries
than last year!
The National Chairman has made some changes since last year.
1. Our state deadline must be to send the essays to the Ohio Women’s Issues State
Chairman Jan Augenstein by January 15 since the deadline to send the winning
essays to the next level is February 15.
2. There is now a contest entry form to be downloaded from the members’ webpage
and it must be completed and included with the essay.
Remember there are 3 categories in which to write an essay – Family, Health, or Career. You must choose only one.
The main theme is “Celebrating the Spirit of America’s Women.” Please go to the members’ webpage (members.dar.org) and
look under the Women’s Issues Committee to find more details (number of words, information for cover page, etc.) and you can
also read the winning essays from previous years.
Since I will be spending the winter in Arizona, please send your completed entry form, cover page, and essay to: Jan
Augenstein, 35631 N. 3rd St., Phoenix, AZ 85086. If you have any questions about the essay or anything concerning this committee, please contact me at 740-244-8111 or email [email protected].
We have such talented ladies in the Ohio Society and each of you has a story to tell. I am truly looking forward to reading your essays!

DAR Scholarship Opportunities
As the days become colder and the end the calendar year comes closer, I would just like to remind all Daughters to share the scholarship opportunities available.
National Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) Scholarships
The NSDAR Website provides the link at http://www.dar.org/national-society/scholarships . This will provide the
information for applicants to complete their applications. If an applicant does not have access to a computer,
please request one of the chapter members to print the NSDAR scholarship information for their use.
It is imperative that the application is complete and received by the national scholarship chairman no later
than February 15. Any questions should be directed to [email protected] .
Ohio Society Daughters of the American Revolution (OSDAR) Scholarships
While the NSDAR no longer requires a chapter sponsor, the Wings of Eagles Scholarship does require an OSDAR
chapter to sponsor any candidate. You do not need to interview the student in order to sponsor her/him, but it
is recommended. Sponsorship is not necessarily an endorsement, but may be if the student is known to the
chapter. Details are available in the State Information Packet, page 33: http://www.ohiodar.org/members/
docsforms/SIP_2014.pdf .
Deadline for postmark of the Scholarship Application is by February 1 st and received by February 6th each
year. The Wings of Eagles Scholarship is offered to all graduating high school seniors, including those completing
a certified home school program, who are citizens of the United States and legal residents of the State of Ohio.
These scholarships are based on academic excellence and financial needs. The forms are found on the OSDAR
Website http://www.ohiodar.org/members/forms.shtml . The required forms must be copied on separate
sheets of paper. The application packet must be complete and arranged in the order as listed in the instructions.
Every document that is required must be a part of the application package when submitted to the State Scholarship Chairman including the FAFSA form. Every year applicants say they cannot get their form in time. This can
be done if the family applies on January first and estimates their income at that time. Incomplete applications
will not be considered.
Each chapter scholarship chairman should review the application package before it is submitted to the State
Chairman. This will enable you to assist the student in anything that is missing or answer any questions they may
have. The State Chairman must receive the complete application package on or before the deadline of February 6th. Only winners will be notified. Any questions should be directed to the State Chairman, Barbara Lee
Rice, 943 Clark Road North, LaRue, Ohio 43332-9235. Phone 740-225-4694, email [email protected].
Please consider a donation to the Wings of Eagles Scholarship Fund
Each year at State Conference when the Wings of Eagles Scholarship winners are announced, much hope is radiated for a very bright future. The bright future that I refer to would be both for the fresh-faced, bright eyed students
that have completed a rigorous application packet whose information has been scrutinized and chosen to be one
of the best in the state, but also for those of us who will age and the young people for which we choose to invest in
any part of their education will become the hubs of our communities and workforce. This is why, if you have ever
considered making a donation to the Wings of Eagles Scholarship Fund, we would welcome your investment into a
bright future. Please send to the OSDAR Treasurer designating “Wings of Eagles” Scholarship Fund. Many thanks
in advance for your generosity.

Two chapter members left their DAR insignia and pins to our chapter. The family also donated part
of their library to our chapter. It was unanimously approved to sell the pins to purchase more books
for the Special Section of the Akron Summit County Library.
To date, approximately 50 books have been given to the Akron Public Library, approximately 50
books were given to the Ohio Genealogical Society, and three books were given to the NSDAR Library. Additionally, 21 books were purchased from the sale of the DAR pins. Recent donations to
the Akron Library bring our total value of books purchased and donated to over $1100.

Oxford Caroline Scott Chapter
Submitted by Susan Moore
Members of the Oxford Caroline Scott Chapter spent Veterans Day morning visiting ten veterans living at
Woodland Manor Nursing Home in Oxford. Each veteran was given a certificate of appreciation and a small
flag. During the visit we discussed what our DAR chapter is and what service work we do. With the help of their
social director they had a wonderful time telling stories about World War II. One vet even had the jacket to his
uniform and told us about all the patches and medals. When the regent was shaking hands and passing out the
certificates a veteran, since nicknamed Casanova, kissed her hand three times! It was a wonderful way to spend
Veterans Day with a great group of true American heroes.

Elizabeth Sherman Reese Chapter
Submitted by Judy Fleming
At their regular meeting, November 1, the members of the Elizabeth Sherman Reese Chapter were honored
and delighted to have Kevin Everhart speak to the group. Mr. Everhart is a Shawnee War Chief. He appeared in his
native regalia and gave an informative and very interesting talk.
Young boys of the Shawnee tribe begin their training as a warrior at about the age of five. It was most interesting to learn that the women were and are an important and respected part of the Shawnee culture. The women
have their own council and leaders. It is only with the approval of the women that the Shawnee may wage war –
the women have the final say.
In speaking of his regalia – the proper term for his clothing according to Mr. Everhart, he shared that the
fringe on his leggings was not just decorative. It aided in walking through the forest silently by allowing branches to
return slowly rather than snapping back and making noise.
After his talk, Mr. Everhart graciously answered questions. The chapter very much enjoyed his sharing of
the Shawnee culture.
The Chapter’s American Indians Committee Chairman, Gail Heffner,
had a wonderful display of artifacts and information for the celebration of National American Indian Heritage month in November.

Akron Chapter’s November meeting brimmed with information and announcements including membership dues being
collected before deadline, Christmas cards for veterans, and Wreaths Across America for veterans’ cemeteries.
This fall, regent Christina Haas and membership committee chair Patricia Nay began “Getting to Know You” at each
meeting. In November, Vella Nunley, her granddaughter Victoria Nunley, and Joyce Nunley, MODAR (Mother-ofDAR) were introduced. The Nunleys travel great distances to attend meetings. Joyce and Victoria drive from Detroit,
MI, to Vella’s home near Canton, OH, and have attended all but one meeting since joining November 2013. Vella
creates beautiful hand-crocheted afghans and lap robes for veterans (members also help by giving her yarn). Victoria is a dedicated Junior member who attends college and works as a video editor. Joyce was integral in her motherin-law’s and daughter’s research for their DAR applications and is a US Air Force Strategic Air Command veteran.
Also to honor veterans, members recited heartfelt poems: Patricia Nay -- “In Flanders Fields” by Capt. John D.
McCrae; Patricia Kuebler -- “The Things that Make a Soldier Great” by Edgar Guest, and Victoria Nunley -- “High
Flight” by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
New member Wendy Brott and Registrar Jill Filo shared their DAR Schools Bus Tour adventures. Jill showed her PowerPoint presentation with photos of scenic campuses, students’ smiling faces, and colorful “Welcome DAR” artwork along with information gleaned
from the trip. Wendy concluded with her moving summary of Tamassee Schools.
Guest speaker Susan M. Fuehrer, Director, Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Administration Medical Center, updated members about the thousands of NE Ohio veterans served daily. She outlined how
modern prosthesis are digitally customized and spoke of their national recognition received for cutting-edge research
and development including VAMC’s “artificial hand that feels” appearing in National Geographic Magazine and on
Discovery Channel.

Martha Pitkin Chapter
Submitted by Nancy David
Martha Pitkin Chapter, Sandusky, became a Commemorative Partner for the Vietnam War Commemoration 50th Anniversary and held our first event. In conjunction with Ohio Veterans Home Volunteer Advisory
Council, led by Executive President Linda Johnston, we organized a Vietnam War Commemoration at our local
Ohio Veterans Home where approximately 250 Vietnam veterans reside. Our goal was to honor veterans for their
service in the Vietnam War as part of our commemoration.
We received grant money from the Ohio Veterans Home Volunteer Advisory Council to help fund the
event. We hired DJ Kevin Johnson to play music from the era and Martha Pitkin members baked cookies. Volunteers for the event were from the Martha Pitkin Chapter, Ohio Veterans Home, and an area Boy Scout, Puck
Kaip. Being in a wheelchair did not keep Vice Regent Cathy Kaip away as she, too, volunteered. DAR member
Kathleen Kraus’ husband William Kraus (a retired music director in the Sandusky School system) and son Stephen Kraus sang the National Anthem and led God Bless America. We also took time out to remember the POWs
and MIAs. Martha Pitkin Chapter Regent Nancy David passed out certificates and pins to Vietnam Veterans who
attended. Cookies and beverages were served to all attendees at the end of the very moving and heartwarming
program. Afterward, volunteers delivered certificates to those who did not attend on their floors throughout the
Ohio Veterans Home.

event. Cathy’s son Puck Kaip, an area Boy
Scout, also volunteered for the event.

Ripley Lieutenant Byrd Chapter
Submitted by Dee Watters
The Ripley Lieutenant Byrd Chapter has been placing markers given to them by the
Ohio Veterans Administration in Georgetown, Ohio on the graves of Revolutionary
War Soldiers. We have placed 15 of these markers so far.
We also were present for the dedication of the Vietnam Soldier Memorial in Ripley this

Martha Devotion Huntington Chapter Observes Veterans Day
Our chapter invited the Executive Director of three homes located on the near West side of Cleveland that are
providing havens for homeless veterans. For three years, the chapter has supported the Fulton House, one of
those homes, with non-perishable food, clothing and household items. The non-perishables stock a community
kitchen at Fulton House. The clothing is invaluable for the 13 residents who frequently arrive with no possessions at all. The household items, such as bedding, small appliances and kitchenware are for veterans who
have located jobs and are moving into apartments in the area.
Director Tim Gleason explained the mission as “to be a catalyst for lasting relationships between people
emerging out of homelessness and people willing to participate in their transformation”. Counseling and support are given with the goal of establishing these veterans in the community and having them participate in
service to others in their community. This is accomplished through values and faith development. They are
most frequently referred by the Louis Stokes VA hospital and social services.
Martha Devotion Huntington collected 30 grocery bags of food items and warm
winter clothing for the men. Last year, we provided a baked ham with all the trimmings for a Christmas dinner. Plans are already underway to do the same this
holiday season. We have been invited for a tour of the facility next year for more
of our membership to see what is offered.
Chapter Regent Vicky Heineck also presented Tim with a Certificate of Appreciation for all his efforts on behalf of these men, 270 in all who have been reestablished in the community.
The photo shows Tim and his two sons “stuffing” a Prius full of donations.

Firelands Chapter NSDAR, Vermilion, Ohio celebrated the receipt of our Chapter Charter at the November
meeting at the Vermilion Boat Club where it was on display for photos. What a joy it was to stand with our
charter.
Our guests were OSDAR Northwest Director Marilyn Stinehart and OSDAR Membership Chair Doris Gorgas.
We dined on vintage DAR plates which commemorated the signing of the treaty of
Paris, heard state greetings and updates, and enjoyed a presentation of Revolutionary period clothing and history by Shari Selander owner of Quarter Master General. She and her husband are in the business of creating period furnishings and
clothing representing the 17th and 18th centuries. They supply historically correct
garments for Disney, many TV series such as the recent Turn as well as those worn
by reenactors and guides of historical museums and villages. The day was ended
with delicious fall cupcakes served in tea cups for us to keep as a rememberance of
the occasion.

Captain William Hendricks Chapter
Submitted by Margie Saull
Members of the Captain William Hendricks Chapter of the Daughter's of the American Revolution prepared bags for
veterans for Veterans Day. Lifesavers with a note that said "You are a lifesaver!" were assembled. Members also attended the Veteran's Day program in Marion. Annually members participate in the program by placing a wreath in
front of the World War I Dough Boy monument located in Veteran's Park. Those placing the wreath are members Bonnie Hamlin and Jane Burkett. The DAR chapter was instrumental in obtaining the monument for Marion. It was the first
monument to be placed in the park and now the park has monuments to represent all veterans. After the veterans
program, the chapter attended their fundraiser for lunch at The Warehouse in Marion. Members are pictured outside
The Warehouse holding the many pop tops they collected for Ronald McDonald House.

The Columbus Chapter NSDAR celebrated their 115th Year Anniversary on November 13, 2014 with an impressive
luncheon meeting beginning with the Grove City High School NJROTC Color Guard and the Ritual ending with
the singing of the Star Spangled Banner lead by Marty Ressig, one of the past chapter regents.
Following a delicious lunch the beautiful cake was enjoyed by everyone. Diane Runyon’s presentation about
Mrs. Ann Kilbourne, the Chapter’s first regent was delightfully informative and heartwarming. Mrs. Kilbourne’s
life story is an inspiration to each of us.
The Past Regents were given an orchid corsage, the book “Wide Blue Sash” and lots of
thank-you’s for the loving dedication they have given and continue to give to the Columbus Chapter to make it what it is today.
It was a pleasure and honor to have the State Officers at the celebration. State Regent
McCann stated that this celebration of the Columbus Chapter’s 115 th Anniversary was a
testament to our Chapter’s longevity with all the changes that have affected our country
over this long period of time. She thanked the Chapter for allowing the State Officers to be
part of this celebration.
The Columbus Chapter members cherish our legacy and will build on that heritage
for our future Daughters.

Turtle Creek Chapter
Submitted by Kate Lamb
Rae Lynn Kruthaup of the Turtle Creek Chapter and her cousin visited her uncle, Roger Bewley, a Vietnam Veteran in 2012. During their visit, “Uncle Roger” mentioned he had been eligible for the Purple Heart but his commander lost the paperwork. When questioned if he was upset about it, he responded, "it didn't mean anything to
me at the time".
Because of “something in his tone of voice”, Rae Lynn realized it did matter to him.
She took it upon herself to get her uncle his Purple Heart. Rae Lynn worked through
government agencies to figure out what paperwork was needed. It took over two
years to get his records in front of the Decoration Committee at Fort Knox, KY. She
encountered difficulty receiving her uncle's complete service record and instead of
giving up, she got Congressman Ed Whitfield and his
staff to help.
The Decoration Committee reviewed the paperwork
and not only awarded Uncle Roger his Purple Heart but also the Republic of Vietnam
Gallantry Cross, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Army Good Conduct
Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
Ray Lynn and the DAR chapters of Turtle Creek and Patrick Gilmore had a ceremony
for him on October 4th in his hometown of Scottsville, KY. In attendance were fifty
family members and members of his community. The University of Kentucky Pershing Rifle Guard posted and retired the colors. Representative Wilson Stone spoke. A catered lunch followed.
