Pentecost fulfilled this promise. The Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and nothing was ever the same again. This event is often referred to as the "birthday" of the church. It took Pentecost--and the power of the Spirit-to embolden the apostles to begin their ministry of preaching and baptizing. Conversions began to happen and the early church began to grow. And all of this took place without Jesus' earthly presence among them. This is one of the most encouraging elements of the practice of our Christian faith. We believe that through the Holy Spirit, God dwells within us and empowers us. We believe that even though we never walked with Jesus and the apostles, we are nonetheless accompanied by the same Spirit who is always available to us! We only need to stir up this Spirit within our souls by praying sincerely, "Come, Holy Spirit!" The special hymn of today's feast, called the sequence, does just this. It also expresses well the package of "benefits" that come from the presence of the Advocate among us: "You, of comforters the best; You, the soul's most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe." And not only do we receive these personal blessings, but the Church herself also receives a tremendous gift. As Jesus said, "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit... will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you." It is only through this divine guidance from on high that the Church has the power and privilege to teach and guide us who are still here below. 2 ST. MICHAEL & ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST ON THE WAY St. John and St. Michael Catholic Parishes are vibrant faith communities committed to living the Gospel of Jesus Christ through lives of prayer, service and education while actively proclaiming "all are welcome." A Message from the Pastoral Leader Dear friends, There are many reasons to give thanks this week. First of all, thanks to all those who helped with our Mother’s Day breakfast at St. John: Ben and his men for their work in the kitchen, Owen Farrell for his donation of the eggs and hash browns, those who came to eat, and especially to all our moms for being the reason we celebrated. Another hard-working group at St. John’s is the cleaning crew. We have 4 groups of women who voluntarily clean our church and social hall each week. It is not easy work and yet they continue to minister with joy. We are so very grateful to them. They include Dorothy Sorensen, Darlene Hodny, Mary Langhoff, Peg Monn, Agnes Zwijacz, Gayle Seidl, Judy Taylor, Jean VandenHeuvel, Felecia Kroll, Bette Meunier, Alice Grogan, Corrine Young, Sydney Young, and Mary Kuhn. (By the way, they are always open to new faces – both women and men) Thanks to Owen VandenHeuvel, Joe Quade, Ken Seidl and Jay Weckler for their work in cleaning out the garage and getting rid of all those treasures that accumulate over the years. We thank Dave Henrichs who made sure the lawn was cut and looking good for Mother’s Day. How blessed we are at both of our parishes for the many hearts and hands that serve us. On another note, St. Michael Chapel turns 50 this summer. Throughout the years, we have done well in maintaining the building and making repairs as needed. While we have a weekly person cleaning the building, we know there is some deep cleaning that also needs to happen. We welcome your help. We are looking at Friday, June 10 at 9:00 am to come together to clean lights, repaint the shed, wash windows, etc. A list of tasks will be provided as the date draws near.
