Mrs Arnold Foster’s dressmaker: Mrs Neville, 15 Connaught St.
Stories:
Harold’s American wife “I w’d like to have 5 minutes conversation with
son, on porcelain!”. Asked if she had seen the sights of London said “I
have seen the Messel family” & when we laughed said Please don’t
laugh, I did not intend to be funny!
“Who of all men living, leads the most unblushingly open immoral life?”
A bachelor parson who has a family living.” C. Hartree.
Cannsey(?) Depew stories: In company with several others & not having
entered into the merriment of the party someone said “You have not
added much to our hilarity or amusement”, he said “Well I cannot make
speeches sing or tell stories but will ask you a conundrum - Why am I
like a turkey on Xmas Eve? Because I am being stuffed with chestnuts!”
The Ld Justice Clerk took a number of Americans over the Edinburgh
law courts & livranges attached. On parting a clergyman or minister of
the party shaking hands with the Ld. Justice Clerk said “Sir, we thank
you for your kind hospitality & when you come to the States we shall
have much pleasure in showing you the law & the Gospel.”
Chaimcey(?) Depew after one of his speeches was asked by a man in a
car how long he took to prepare his speeches. When told they were not
prepared but spontaneous he said “Well I am a bit of a liar myself but it
is astonishing to me you can lie so well & so much without any
forethought.”
Mr Stones: Invited to theatre by married man friend who had palpable
lady with him. Seeing his mother-in-law in stalls of theatre went &

apologised to her for being with Mr Stone & such a lady! Had no idea Mr
Stone as that sort!!!
Mr Konitz story of Sir W. Pearce who asked Mr K. to meet a certain lady
friend & see her into comfortable quarters in London during Sir W’s
absence abroad & look after her etc. The lady went mad & Mr K. had to
see Doctors & arrange for her being put under restraint! Much trouble &
bother! Sir W.P. died & Lady P. sent for Mr K. who had been an intimate
friend of the house & said her husband on his death bed had told her of
Mr K’s disgraceful conduct with lady & w’d never recieve him again in
her house! Dying confessions?!
Nonie when Lennie told him he had a dear little brother said “Who is his
father?”
Small child who had prayed for a brother when he arrived said it was no
surprise to him because he had prayed for one “but what a surprise for
Mother!”
Young swell drove into another carriage. Coachman “It was not my
master’s fault” “No but it was yours for allowing him to drive.
“A child may lead a chauffeur to the petrol but 9 men cannot make him
drink.
Nellie K’s dry story: Spanish soldier charged with stealing golden goblet
fr. the Virgin’s altar. After praying some time declared the Virgin had
graciously leant forward & given him the goblet. As R. Catholics cannot
deny miracles there was silence in court but the judge in dismissing
prisoner cautioned him to show his gratitude to the Virgin in future by
“Silence”.
Mr P.Portman’s: Teacher of Sunday School anxious to relieve the
seriousness of Sunday lessons “Now children can any of you tell me the

name of the pretty little thing I saw coming here today with bright eyes a
little body & large bushy tail, it ran up a tree, now what was it.” All silent
until a small child ventured “God”! Also small boy asked who his father
was “I havn’t got no Father & I havn’t got no Mother”. Then where did
you come from? “I’m the mean trick the Lodger played sister Susan”.
Equal to the Lark story.
Mr Yardsey’s Fox Pitt. Little boy shown his twin brothers. After
contemplating them for some time seriously said “I have quite decided
which I shall keep!”
Impecunious English barrister married a very wealthy American girl.
When the clergyman arrived at that part of marriage service “With all my
worldly goods I thee endow” A cousin of bride who was sitting by a
cousin of the bridegroom’s whispered “There goes poor Henry’s valise”.
April 1904. Maudie asked Nonie if he would send his love to Nana, “Yes
Mother, send it all I am always making fresh love & only keep the old for
myself!”
Bear story: Man asked to take a pet bear on visit country house. One
night it strayed & after hunting everywhere overheard on passing one of
the bedrooms a woman’s voice saying “I don’t care who you are or what
you are but I will not have you in my bed with that motor coat on!”
A man was discribing the tortures of a nightmare he had experienced,
dreaming he was in Hades suffering the tortures of the dammed, when
his companion exclaimed “It might have been worse” “What do you
mean” asked the dreamer. The other, “It might have been true!”

Dull & dark & cold. Roy to Pyt. Out morg. shop’g. Roy to Pyt until Wed
when he goes to Midge, Stoke Edith, Hereford. Walked to Aunt Linda’s.
Saw her Ethel & Amy. On to Maudie’s. Lennie busy in his room turning
out silver. Lin dined 10 o’c. Quiet evg alone. Excellent drawing, old man
& boy.
Saturday 2 January
Cold raw morg. Rain on ice! Dangerous. Lin & self dine with Maud 7.45.
Paid Jones chaine d’or for E, £1.12.0 also pd into Bank Burmah Oil div
£4.9.0.
Sunday 3 January
Dull & damp. Lin & self for walk morg. Maudie Lennie & Florence to
luncheon. Left at 3.30, darling well. Lin to Club to tea. Sat in drawing
room. Lady Lockyer & Lord Kingsbury called & had tea. Ld K. stayed till
6.30, was v. amusing, leaves tonight for Scotland.

Monday 4 January
Out morg. Met Hoods, Miss Thorburn, Mrs P. Simpson. Maudie &
Florence to luncheon, darling looking so well. Dear Lin’s birthday. We
dine 7.30 at Sir Norman Lockyer’s. Maudie & F. left at 3.30. Harold, his
wife & Mr Messel dine at Maud’s tonight. Delightful evg. at Lady
Lockyer’s, they seem so happy.
Tuesday 5 January
Mrs Martin Hood at home 15 Nevern Sqre 4 - 7. To Bank. Paid back £100
fr loan, leaves now £200 owing & leaves a balance at bank in current
account of £60. Saw Maud morg. Mrs Pirrie, Miss Carlyle, Miss
Thompson, Ethel Edwin, Fanny & May Nembhard called. Drove at 11.
Again worried with Lin’s complaint. Model called. Quiet evg. alone with
Lin.
Wednesday 6 January
Mrs Martin Hood 4 - 7. Dark yellow morg. Lin out to luncheon. Roy
returns fr. Pyt festivities & goes on to Stoke Edith for more!!! I dine at
Maud’s. Unable to go to Maud’s, too seedy with pain fr. Lin’s complaint!
Roy returned fr. Pyt v. tired out after the 3 dances. Remaining here night
& going to Stoke Edith tomorrow. Arrived in time for luncheon.
Thursday 7 January
Mrs McKenna 4 - 7. Lunch 1.30 with the Nembhards. Still feel v. seedy fr
yesterday’s pain. Roy lunches 12.45 & I leave him at Paddington on way
to Nembhards. He gos to Midge for balls. V. good luncheon. Volaille of
Veal, roast partridge, cold pickled pork, stewed pears & a pretty pud of
jam & a layer of custard cream on top. Saw Dora’s lovely dresses &
tiara.
Friday 8 January
Out at ¼ to 3 shop’g. & called on Maud. Little “Pastral” there Harold’s
wife. Ordered ½ doz champagne & 2 botts whiskey at Haines & Potter.

dressmaker 6 Eardly Cresc, afraid! Cold & damp.
Saturday 9 January
Roy returned at 4.30 fr. Stoke. Lin & self lunched at Mrs Pirrie’s. Large
number long menu. Uninteresting people. Cossins, Lady Roxburgh, Prof
Graham, Mr Justice & Lady Bigham, Miss Ritchie (illeg illeg) etc etc.
Dine all 3 at darling Maud’s. Roy looking little better.
Sunday 10 January
Wet & sun alternate morg. I walked to Hyde Pk Corner with Lin, home
alone to luncheon. Roy out. Mrs & Graham Keith & young Lockyer to
dinner. Very pleasant evg. & Lin v. bright & lively, likes Mrs K. vy much,
dear bright little woman. No one called.
Monday 11 January
Darling Maud, Florence & Mrs Harold Messel to luncheon. I went to
Sloane St & Woollands, poor dog followed me. Called at Mr Hartree’s.
Carriage at 4. Darling went with me to Mrs Young’s about my dress. Saw
black chiffon velvet & mole colour we both liked. Back to Maud’s &
home. Roy to drill Balcombe, back at 10.30.
Tuesday 12 January
Dull, dark. At ¼ to 12 with darling Maud to Mrs Young & chose mole
coloured chiffon velvet for Dora’s wedding. Left Maudie at Glouc. Ter
1.30 & found Sp. lunching with Lin on return. Only Mrs Leonard (Miss
Grierson) called. Roy went to Chichester to stay with the Homphreys for
dance.
Wednesday 13 January
Maudie’s dear little 2nd son born at 5 to 10 AM. Only awakened at 6 o’c in
the morg. & all over by 10! I arrived 10.15 & found my darling looking so
well. Remained at Glouc Ter. all day. Baby boy very Hebrew looking but
such a clean strong happy baby. Lorings, Parkers, Harold Messels & Mr

& Mrs Messel all called, & Lin. Roy fetched me 10.30. Lennie v. happy &
all so well & smooth there. Nurse Millie.
Thursday 14 January
Out morg. On way to Maudie’s but painful corn drove me home. Went
3.30 to get Baby comb, flowers, umbrella & frame & to see darling Maud.
Slight inflammation in an ovary not comfortable but she seemed well in
herself & looked well, & Bandit v. good & quiet on my lap.
Friday 15 January
12.30 to be fitted Mrs Young. Saw laundress Troy at Midge’s & man
about blinds, v. dear. Decided to change laundress. To darling Maud at
4.30, looked well & bright but still pain. Stayed some time with her. Baby
well & healthy.
Saturday 16 January
Out shop. morg. Lunched at 1 o’c. Lin & self to Vaudeville saw “The
Cherry Girl” Ellaline Terriss in it. Very pretty bright piece. After drove to
my own’s. Looks well but still has pain in her right side, fear ovary or
appendix inflamed. Saw Harold Messels there. Tabbie called to see
Baby. She & H. returned fr. Mr Foley’s today. Quiet evg. with Lin & Roy.
Mr & Mrs Messel & Lorings go abroad together.
Sunday 17 January
Fine morg. Walked with Lin to see darling Maud, had pain in right side
again & temp 100. Looks fairly well but I feel v. anxious. Baby well.
Walked home with the Harold Ms, Lennie & Florence W. Lennie, Tabbie
& Mr Stone dine here 8 o’c. Young Lockyer called. Dull dinner rather.
Fancy Lennie & Mr Stone non sympathetic.
Monday 18 January
X. Changed laundress. Young Onslow Ford’s marriage with Miss
Henschell, Essex Church, the Mall, Notting Hill, 2 o’c. Dark dull day. F.
Walford lunched. We went after to Buzzards for sponge cakes for Nonie

boy. Sat with Maudie 1½ hours, better. Roy came home with an awful
cold X made him take champagne. Lady Hickman called morning, stayed
some time. Mrs Tomalin called but am sending clothes to Troy laundry.
Tuesday 19 January
Dull dark & raining. At 11.30 in brougham to Barkers about mistake with
French book, muddlers, & to be fitted at Mrs Young’s, & to Maudie’s,
much better. Did not see Maud fearing to give her Roy’s awful cold.
Roy dining out & going to dance after. Vy nervous about his cold. He
won’t take any care of himself, wish I did not worry & c’d be as calm as
Lin. Mrs Spofforth called.
Wednesday 20 January
Dull dirty day. Out at 11 o’c angry at racing omnibus, spoke to collector.
X. To Bond St, bought hat at Louise’s Regent St. Pd by cheque at shop
£2.2.0. Met Mrs Caldecott. At 3 in Maud’s brougham to call on Mrs Pirrie,
Lady de la Rue, Lady Armstrong (just leaving for 3 months) & Miss
Thomson, in. Ordered pr. of shoes Marshalls & to Maud’s. Did not go up
fearing as Roy’s cold so bad. Both darlings doing well. Roy & self alone
evg, his cold v. bad indeed.
Thursday 21 January
Dull dark day. Lin to Stoke Edith until Wed, next 4 days shooting! So
glad for him to get change & sport included. Roy’s cold v. heavy &
seems on his chest, impossible to do anything for or with him, so
morose & cross for any attention. Letter fr. my darling so well & so
happy God bless her, the greatest joy of my life. Drove fr. Maud’s to see
Midge & Dora at Coburg, stayed some time.
Friday 22 January
Mrs Rose, 28a South Audley St, at home 4 - 7. Mrs Young 12 o’c & I
lunch at Charlie Hartree’s 2 o/c. Only Lady Lawrence there. Had carriage
to Mrs Young’s, to Lady’s Shirt Co & left me at C.H’s. Walked fr. there
across Pk to Maud’s, both going on well, carriage fetched me 5.30. Roy

out so only had gruel & bread & butter. No lunch or dinner at home
today. Margarith out.
Saturday 23 January
Mrs Rose 4 - 7. Dense fog, in all day, v. cold. Stock Ex. Holiday, Roy at
Club all day. Had quiet dinner & to bed at 10 o’c. Sent Otley over to
Maud with note & book “Vices of the Virtuous”.
Sunday 24 January
Mrs Rose 4 - 7. Wrote to Lin, Nana etc. Walked to darling Maud’s, v. well,
Baby also, & back. Alone to luncheon. Midge & Dora, Mr Douglas &
Violet to dinner, 4 ladies, 2 men! Very dark & very raw & cold. Anna &
George to tea. Dullish dinner w’d have preferred Midge & D. to ourselves
alone. Margarith out short time.
Monday 25 January
Dull & dark, v. cold. Out morg. Breakfasted in morg. room, dining room
cleaned & not used all day. Lunched in morg. room & had my gruel &
bread & butter there. Roy dined at Carlton with Mr Sterne & to see
Orchid after. Looks v. seedy with cold. Called at 3.30 on Henschall, Mrs
Walker, Lady Quilter, Mrs Rose, Maudie, both doing well. Mrs Sington
called & saw her at Maudie’s.
Tuesday 26 January
Lovely morg. warm. Roy to Pyt for 3 nights. V. seedy not fit to go. At 11
in brougham to Bond St about toque, too dear, to Maudie both well &
Maudie looking fatter. Spencer to lunch with me & Hilda fetched him at
3.30. Ada Saunders (Mrs Aitkin) & Florence only called. Margarith
danced off at 7.30 without permission. Used morning room for meals.
Margarith out at 7.30 (illeg) spoke to her, sorry, next out Friday & little on
S instead.

Mrs W.S.Gilbert, 52 Pont St. Horrid day v. wet & warm. Out morg. shop’g
on foot, too tired to walk to Maud’s, got as far as round pond. Lin
returned fr. Stoke Edith at 3.30, cart fetched him. Sat with him after
whilst he worked. Margarith out. Lin to Punch dinner.
Thursday 28 January
Mrs Taylor Whitehead 4.30. Fanny Nembhard 4.30. To tea with Mrs W,
Mrs P. Simpson there. To Nembhards, saw Archdeacon & Mrs Brooks, &
to darling M. Both Baby & M. going on splendidly. Roy returned from Pyt
looking v. seedy. Awful day.
Friday 29 January
To see darling Maud, vy well. Shops & walked. Fine!!! & last Friday also
fine. At 3 o/c in brougham, met Midge & D. Kensington, drove them to
Russell & A’s. Saw D’s wedding garment fitted & going away dress, she
looked lovely in them both, Midge in hers. Drove Midge to Good’s, & to
Maud alone, both doing well. Saw Lennie, has 2 men dining there. Roy to
dine Sherries & dance at their house after. Dickie & self alone. Wet
pouring wet.
Sunday 31 January
Mr Child dining here, asked Ethel E. & M. Wallace. Mabel came, v.
pleasant evg. Mr C improves on acquaintance & seems intelligent. Mabel
looked very pretty. So wet unable to go out all day. Spencer only called
afternoon. Lin working on motor drawing.
Monday 1 February
Out morg. shop’g. At 3 to Jones about D’s present, selected some to
choose from. To Maud’s after calling on Mrs Tuppert & Mrs Laking,
found Mrs Hohler at Maudie’s & Ruth. Prefer having Maudie to myself.
Tabbie came for night. Spencer & Lennie dined here, family talk.

Tabie left at 1 o’c for Stoke, lunched first. Out with her to Kensington at
10.30 & to order a dress at Gompels like mine! V. wet. Lin, Roy & self to
St James’ to see “Old Heidelburg”. Lin working at motor cut. Looked
thro’ silver things for Dora.
Wednesday 3 February
Mrs W.S.Gilbert, 52 Pont St. At 3 o’c to Jones about Dora’s present &
took back silver things sent on approval. To Bumpus for ivory prayer
books & Anne’s book. F. Walford here to luncheon & went with me.
Maudie & Baby v. well. Stayed an hour as usual.
Thursday 4 February
Mrs McKenna 4 – 7, 22 Portland Place Not home yet! Out at 10.30 by bus
to Stores got Roy’s present for Dora, a double photo frame. Left
umbrella to be recovered, veil, & Lin’s gold pin. Met Lady D. Hartland &
Lady Robertson in Sloane St. Sp. here to luncheon. Mrs Dent & Mrs
Harold M. called. I called alone at 4 on Mrs McKenna, Hadley, Critchett,
E. De la Rue, Roxburgh, Costen & Taylor, & Maudie. Drove Maud Paxton
back. Lin, Roy & self alone dinner.
Friday 5 February
Lady de la Rue’s dinner 8.15. To see darling morg. Found her on chair
for first time, looked pale & thin. V. pleasant dinner Mrs de la Rue.
Common little man and Mr Wanbelin on my right & left. Mr & Mrs
Herkomer, Sir N. & Lady Wood, Sir C. & Lady Hunter etc etc, Lady &
Miss Maclean. V. pleasant evg. altogether. Lin finished in good time.
Saturday 6 February
Poured. Drove to see darling Maud. Seems pale & not making enough
progress.
Sunday 7 February
Poured after luncheon. Lin & self walked to Maud’s. Lin out to luncheon,
Lennie walked back with me but w’d not remain to luncheon. Sp. came

after & Mr Paxton & remained until 7. Awfully tired as I was packing
morg. before going to see darling Maud.
Monday 8 February
Lin, Roy & self to Stoke Edith Pk, D.V. Dull day. Saw Sp. at Sta. Arrived
4.30. D. only up Saty, in Hall wrapped in shawl & Tabs serving coffee &
Midge tea. Lady Knightly, Hon Mrs Gage, Mr & Mrs Schuster & Mr Vivian
best men etc. House party 24. Mr Foley there, also at dinner, took me in
to dinner. D. not able to dine but came in after. We danced. Mrs Railkes
there too. Presents magnificent in library. Could not sleep.
Tuesday 9 February
Dora’s wedding day! Wet!!! very. Lady Pearson at home having Mission
Socy 3.30! House party 26. Breakfasted in (illeg) room where 5 tables
were arranged charmingly. Dora looked perfectly lovely & all his family
seemed charmed with her, & our family! Lucky they are approved!
Everything beautifully managed. Fine Hungarian band played in painted
hall. Big reception & refreshments in dining room. Dora left 4 o’c in
charming champagne col’d dress, coat etc. Dance after dinner. Sat
between the 2 Hams dinner, H. feels D’s loss more than Midge.
Wednesday 10 February
Mrs Mount Batten’s at home 9.30 – 12.30. Ref. Left Stoke Edith by 1 train.
Con, Sp. Ada & Roy trav. 2nd C. together & I first class with Mrs Gage
who talked all the way up. Country under water & near Oxford people
getting about in sailing boats! Lin, Tabs, Ham Gwen & Eve. Mrs Buckley
& Miss Forster by 10 train, rest left later. Dull day, found station all
decorated. Con came for night, we 3 alone for dinner. I called & saw
darling Maud, Mrs Hohler there.
Thursday 11 February
Dull. Walked with Con into Kensington, ordered windows to be cleaned
Monday, & ham. Con left at 11 for Worthing. I walked to Maud’s found
her just starting with Nurse M. & Baby for drive in brougham. Wrote to 2

ladies for Maud about Mad. Horn & walked home. Placards up
Manchurian Railway blown up! 2 battleships (Russian) disabled.
Friday 12 February
To see Maudie, going on splendidly. Maudie has engaged Mad’ll Horn,
references so good. Lin & Roy dined at 10 o’c.
Saturday 13 February
Packed morg. Lin & self went by 5 train to Pangbourne to stay at Sir
Benjamin Baker’s. Mr Knowles arrived with us. House party, Sir B, Mrs
Kemp, Mona, Mrs Spagnoletti, Mr Knowles & Miss Siemens. Clergyman
& daughter to dinner also. Roy dining at Maud’s. Emma & Frances to
Pantomime, unable to get in.
Sunday 14 February
Fine morg. Out with Mrs Kemp seeing birds, poultry horses, & sweet
little gazelle fr. Assam. Major Towse (the S. African hero blind) & wife to
luncheon. Most pathetic & such a handsome man. Miss Siemens. Lin,
Mrs Kemp, Mona & self to tea at Mrs Telford Simpson’s at Goring, lovely
house. Col & Mrs Macdonald there & met Major & Mrs Towse in their dog
cart. Poured with rain. Mrs Simmonds & Mr S brother-in-law to dinner.
Monday 15 February
Delightful visit. Retrurned by 1.50 train fr. Pangbourne. Mrs Kemp &
Mona saw me to Station. Lin returned by 1st train with Sir Benjamin, Mr
Knowles, Mr Spagnoletti & Miss Siemens. I got into compartment with
Mrs Towse nice little woman. Changed at Reading. Carriage met me & I
went to Maud’s. She looks wonderfully well, was sitting up in bed in
Japanese garment. Baby v. good. Roy looks seedy, out to dine at
Garrick with Mr Bristowe. Lin & self alone, dine 8.30 meaning 9.
Tuesday 16 February
In brougham to pay Weller’s bill £2.4.0. F. Walford called bringing lovely
flowers fr. my darling. Mrs Caldecott, Maggie Hadley, Mrs E. Pollack &

self alone to dinner, late, Lin hard at work. Met Mrs H. Adams morg.
Wednesday 17 February
Mabel Wallace luncheon. Did not come, seedy. Emma & Frances to
Pantomime. Roy out. Lin at Punch dinner, alone self. Called on de la
Rue, Grantham, Miss Laurence, Mrs Reise, Armstrong, Ld. Alverstone,
Dickens, Eykyn, Millais, Richards, in all, & my darling Maud looking
sweet. Brought Maud Paxton back.
Thursday 18 February
Mrs Daniell called. Out morg, shops in Kensington. Very cold & raw. At 3
to Bumpus, chose 2 of Maham’s books for Lennie’s birthday, £1.1.0. To

Lovely bright frosty morning. Lennie’s birthday, Roy dines there. Lin
dined at 10 o’c, must be v. tired. Sat with him. Saw darling Maud
morning, walked there & back. Sat about ¾ hour with Maudie who was in
waiting to see Dr Pollock.
Saturday 20 February
Out shops morg. To matinée with Lin “The darling of the Gods” dull
very, but beautifully staged. Lena Ashwell too old & not pretty enough
for the part. Saw Mrs P. Simpson there. Bought fruit & flowers Butts on
way home.
Sunday 21 February
Mrs Pirrie’s luncheon ¼ to 2 o’c. Wore wedding garb. 28 to luncheon. Mr
Parker vain engineer took me in, v. full of himself. Lives in Pk. St. Miss
Carlisle sang beauftifully, v. pretty smart mother. Wolff, May, Drage etc

Dull after sun morg. Met Mrs Abbott. Midge, H. & Ethel English to dinner.
Went at 3.30 to call Mrs Fildes, she & Luke in Egypt for 10 weeks. Took
(illeg) with me to Mrs Stone’s, in, Ada Sp, & Maud, not well & in her room
looks pale & delicate. To Midge Coburg, Mrs Fennady with her. Home. H.
arrived fractious, better after played bridge with Roy & Ethel. Midge &
self talked, very lively M.
Tuesday 23 February
Out morg Kensington. The Nembhards called, Galbraiths, Mabel W.
P.Simpson, Danniells, Ada Sp. & Hilda. Lin hard at work on Motor
drawing. Roy to drill. Lin & self to dine at Maud’s. Margarith forgot Lin’s
evg. paper!
Wednesday 24 February
Very cold. Walked to Mrs Keith with Rags & back. Drove at 4, Maudie
again laid up with threatening of apendecitis. Most anxious & worried
about her. Dr. Robinson thinks operation will be necessary later. Roy
out to dinner with Mr Sterne.
Thursday 25 February
Very cold. Nellie Keith dined here with Lin & self, was very amusing. Roy
dined at Mrs Larnack’s & went to dance at Grafton Gallery with her &
dau. & Mr Ponsonby, v. good. To Libertys morg. & to Maud. Still in bed &
to remain there & not allowed to move. Walked home. Called at 3.30 on
Mrs Galbraith, Dent, Drage, & to darling M’s seems bright but has to be
still. Saw Lennie as anxious as self.
Friday 26 February
Very cold. Saw American Mr Yansey(?) about Lin’s drawings. Maud to
have gone with Baby to Balcombe. All put off & v. anxious. I drove at 3

Maudie looks better but not allowed to move or see anyone.
Saturday 27 February
Walked over to see Maud directly after breakfast, same, looks pale. Lin
dines with Mr Spielmann, Holborn. Roy dined at Mrs H.Messel’s 7 o’c.
Self alone to see “Duke of Kilikrankie” matinée Criterion. Midge & H
joined us there, excellent & most amusing. Asked H. thro’ telephone fr.
Taylor’s shop near Maud’s to go with us. Baby v. good, nursed him all
the time I was at Maud’s. Her dear hands so cold always. Roy to theatre
after dinner with the H.M’s & met Lin at Garrick.
Sunday 28 February
Midge & H. dine with us. Bitterly cold. Walked with Lin to Maud’s. Still
unable to move but better tho’ soreness at times. Saw the Harold Ms
there. Lennie & (illeg illeg) with them.
Monday 29 February
Gwen came in time for lunch, her maid Lore putting up at Convent Kens
Sqre. Out again after lunch only in in time to dress for 6 o’c dinner, Lin,
Roy, Gwen & self to Pantomime. Not good, only Dan Leno & Mabel Love
worth seeing. Horribly cold. To darling Maud morg. Walked there & back.
Tuesday 1 March
Pd off £50 of Loan leaving £150 owing. Roy dined with Lennie. Lin dined
with Mr Galbraith Jnr Carlton Club. I drove at 11 to Barkers & Maud’s, &
stayed at Maud’s until 1.10, carriage fetched me. Nurse M. & Florence
coming to Tree’s Charity Matinée £3.3.0 places! Lin again worried over
motor drawing, bore. Mrs Coward & Mrs Laking called. Gwen & self to
dinner alone & bed early. Gwen out fr. 10 till 7!

Mrs McKenna 4 - 7. Mr Douglas 4 - 6.30. Mrs Laking 5.30. Hippodrome
matinée for Gwen & self, went by bus. Met Gwen there. V. good
entertainment. Took Gwen in cab (horrid day) to Samsons left her & on
to Maud, darling still unable to move. Carriage fetched me. 3/- cab &
(illeg). Lin, Roy, Gwen & self to dinner 6.30.
Friday 4 March
Lunch at Coburg with Midge 1.30, beastly day. Gwen off as usual at 10
for day. Mrs Krabbe at Midge’s, pretty little dark widow. Walked with
Midge after to darling Maud’s, Midge on to Aunt Linda’s. Stayed with
Maud till 4.30, home in cab 1/-. Gwen off to Pyt, just in time to to see her.
Roy dined out & to dance after.

Lace coverlet & chair cover cannot be found. Dull as usual but warmer.
Lin & self to matinée, Bouchier. Roy to Arundel early, left at 8.30 for
Duke of Norfolk’s reception. Roy dines at Lennie’s, & Midge. Lin & self
alone. Midge dined at Lennie’s, H. gone to Frisbys.

Dull & raining. Roy to Club early. Roy dined with Midge at Coburg Hotel.
Lin & self walked to darling Maud’s & back. Lennie, Ruth & Muriel came
part of way with us. Lin & self alone to dinner & luncheon. Mary Millais &
Florence Blair called. X. Missed several gold things fr. my safe, chain,

bother, want it altered. To darling Maud’s at 3 after Harrods. Chocolate
1/3½, & sups & lip salve 11d. Maudie looking v. seedy in bed, too many
there, Maud P, Cussans, F.W, self & Nurse M. Too much for her.

Sir W.H.Wills dinner 8 o’c. Mrs Harold Messel 4 - 6. Roy off at 9.20 with
Mr Sterne in motor for hours’ drive & taking him to City. Walked morg. to
see darling Maud. Only Mary Millais & Florence Blair came. Maudie in
bed again with cold, not surprised. Hilda M, Gibbs, Ruth & Nannie at
darling’s. Roy dined out. V. good evg at Sir H. Wills. Mr Fellowes took
me in, Causten, Lady Roxborough, Adams, G. Agnews etc there. Vy
trady people but pleasant.

Mrs H. Messel 4 - 6. Mrs H. Lucy. Honble Mrs Laurence concert & tea, 23
Eaton Sqre. Dine with Lennie at 7 & to German play with him. Went with
Lin to Mrs Laurence’s. Vy smart & excellent music, lovely lovely house,
beautiful Romney, Gainsborough, Hoppner, Sir J. Reynolds etc. I dined
at Lennie’s & went after to German play “Zapfinstreich” by F.A.
Bayerlein. Excellent. Saw Fleischman, Wolff & Miss May & Felix Simons
& Mrs F. Terry there. Florence went also. Maudie has cold.
Thursday 10 March
Mrs Suttons dinner 8 o’c. I lunched at Tabbie’s Coburg & walked to
darling Maud first, stayed some time. Vy cold. Baby, Nurse M. & Mad’lle
Horn for drive in open carriage. Midge, Tabs, Eve & self walked to
Wigmore St to see Eve’s arm under Rontgen rays. Had it photod by rays.
Left Tabs & Eve Piccadilly end of Bond St & walked with Midge to
Curzon St, took omnibus home. V. tired. Rested ½ hour. Roy dined at
home alone, out after. Very pleasant dinner Mrs S’s, 18. Gosses, (illeg)

Herbert about my teeth & he c’d not do them, made ap’t for tomorrow 10
o’c. To darling Maud after calling on Mrs Krabbe ,vy charming house, &
on Galbraiths, out. Maudie in bed with bad cold!!! Taken fr. Lennie they
say! Lennie going dinner to Harold Messel’s, & Roy.

Otley’s wife ill. Out morg. shops, in 1.30. X. Otley’s wife taken away to
Hospital with dyptheria unable to have carriage & dare not go to darling
Maud’s. Roy out for day with Mr Sterne on motor to Kempton Park races
& he dined with him at Carlton. Sent Frances over to Maudie, was up
today a little. F. Walford came evg. to let me know how Maud was, in
cab. Lin & self alone.

Dora ill at Rome, Typhoid. Mr & Mrs Harold Messel & Mr & Mrs Rooth to
dinner 8 o’c. Lin to Calais, Roy to Club. Alone all day. Cannot go to
darling Maud for fear contageon fr. dyptheria, Otleys wife. Harold
brought news of Ham & Midge having started for Rome at 8 today, had
news of Dora’s being ill with typhoid at Rome 12 o’c!!! Col Brook, Mrs
Paxton, Sp. & Hilda called. In all day & v. tired. V. pleasant evg. Mrs R.
sang.

Mad’lle Horn here for day. Helped me mend linen, vy useful & neat little
person. Roy’s cold v. bad, at home all day, only went for walk with dogs.

out to dinner. Sp. & Ada called. Champagne at dinner. Paid back another
£50 to loan, leaving £100.

Roy came down. Went for walk to wood & saw boys saw pit. Tabs & self
for walk. Lin alone. Very cold. Roy told me que toutes les filles etaient

Lin did photos. Went for walk & gathered violets, Lin & self, Tabs & Roy.
Mr Berkeley Portman came for luncheon & 2 children, Chichesters. Lady
Stalbridge came at 3 & stayed all afternoon. Mr Gordon & Mr B.P.
staying here. Went round Houses. Children to tea, Shaw Stuarts etc.

Lovely day. All to Church, Tabs, Gareth, Mervyn, Evy, Mr Berkeley
Portman & Mr Gordon. Lin & I went to meet them. Tabs & self drove back
in Dr. Tench’s motor. After luncheon walked about with Mr B.P. &
gathered violets & told stories! Mr Oldfield came to tea, good looking
man. Lin does not look well. Bridge & bed. Roy on motor with Mr J.
Bennett who came to luncheon.

lunch & drove with Tabs to Semley. Mr G, Roy & Tabs to Sherborne by 5
train for ball, returning tomorrow. Alone to dinner. Vere Bennett here.

Winifred Noots marriage at Camp Hill Grange, Nuneaton. Tabs & Mr G. &

Wet early fine later. Gareth up all night with croup, Tabbie v. tired.

Mrs Tupper. Lovely day walked with Lin, Tabs & Evie to Semley. Lin &
self long walk round (illeg). Mr Bennett & Vere came in after tea, told Lin
several interesting details of pictures etc in Pyt House. Astonished to
find him so well informed & rational.
Monday 11 April
Lovely day. Went with Tabbie over Agent’s house furnished £80 a year
wanted. Mr Pitkin lunched here. At 3.30 Tabs, Lin & self drove to
Shaftesbury, lovely drive. Went over old ruins being excavated, church.

Met Miss Oliver & walked to Mr Fox Pitt’s where we had tea. The Bests,
interesting American clergyman & his wife, Yardley, Mr & Mrs Fawkes
etc there. Pretty little house & garden with lovely view. We walked long
way home sending carriage on. Evie off at 9 to Grosvenors.
Tuesday 12 April
Heavenly morg. Too warm to sit reading long on steps. Nelie Grosvenor
luncheon. Young Gerald Grove came to stay, handsome boy, v. good
manners. At 3.30 Lin & self fetched Tabs fr. C(illeg) drove to Donhead to
see Canon Short’s wonderful old garden of trout pools & after to
Donhead St Mary Church. Beautiful old church, exquisitly situated on
top of hill overlooking Wardour Castle. Then to Lord Winford’s for tea.
White cyclamen v. fine & (illeg) on wall in clusters. Miss Bret nurse at St
Thomas Hospital. Met Mrs Gerald Grove walking on way home. Packed.
Wednesday 13 April
Lin & self return to London by 10o’c train. Glorious but v. windy day.
Comfortable journey. Roy & self dined alone, seems vy worried &
depressed about business, had drawn all money out of firm. Vy sorry &
fear muchly his extravagent ideas & tastes will ruin his chances of doing
anything.
Thursday 14 April
Pd. Weller £4.8.0, S(illeg) £1.15.4, & Barkers £2.16.0. Mrs Young £16.16.0.
Lovely day, fearful headache all day. Slept badly & had night sweat. Roy
depressed about business. Hamilton Langley to dinner, much better
news of Dora. Roy to a dance at 10 o’c. Sp. came in during desert. Called
on Aunt Linda, Mrs Messel, Ruth!! & Mrs Welby, looks rather swollen in
face.
Friday 15 April
Dark yellow morg, had to have electric light. Bad night & heavy sweat
feel I need a fortnight’s complete rest, not visiting.

Mr Wynn also on visit. Pianola. Headache all day.

Lovely day. After luncheon F. & self in Victoria to Nymans. Mrs Harold &
H. only there. Lennie, Mr Hodgson & Roy in motor. Lin remained with
Maudie. Had long walk thro’ wood to Lake. Roy seems v. seedy, walked
back. F. & self returned in motor. Pianola evg. Slept v. badly neuralgia
back of head.
Monday 18 April
Slept badly. Glorious morg. Mr Wynn, Lennie & Roy off early. Darling
Maud seems better & easier fr. pain. Rested until lunchtime. Lin & self
for long walk with 4 dogs, v. troublesome, & only Peter returning with
us. Sat with Maudie after lunch & went with Lin at 4.30 in motor to East
Grinstead to meet Lennie. Motor broke down 2 miles short of E.G.
Luckily cart took us on & we walked up footpath to Station, found
Lennie & returned Balcombe by train. Car returned same evg soon after
us! Maudie & F. for drive. To bed early.
Tuesday 19 April
Glorious morg. Lennie taking Maud to London to see Dr Pollock. Nurse
Millie meeting them Vic & going with her. Slept well & feel better. Dr
Pollock says Maud is to be treated as an invalid & that she is to
breakfast in bed & rest after luncheon & to go to bed early. Darling very
tired & had to be douchd 3 times daily with boracic powder. Lennie
rather tiresome.
Wednesday 20 April
Mrs Tupper at home. Mademoiselle, Nonie, Anne & Nurse F. for drive not
in till 10 to 12. Maud left with Baby. Lady came to see about Kate’s

Mrs Alfred Mellor 3.30 - 6.30. Maudie about same. Read in her room
morg. Short walk after posting letters & short walk with Nonie at 3.30 &
Mademoiselle to gather primroses. Nonie v. tiresome. The darling is
being spolit by Nurse F, is utterly disobedient except with Lennie &
Maud when he is as good as gold. Florence met Lennie at Three
Bridges. Lennie in good spirits elected a Liveryman of Goldsmith’s
Company.

later. Tall nice girl. 7 to dinner. Maudie to bed at 10 o’c, danced after. I
went up earlier. V. pleasant evg. Lennie very lively. Lovely afternoon.

walk. Sat & read to Darling Maud & finished “Oliver Twist”. After lunch

home at 7.30! Maudie & self in all day. Mr Allen & F. for walk after tea.

Lady Carbutt 3.30 to 6. Stayed all day with Maudie. Did not meet Lennie
at East Grinstead, F. went instead. Lovely day but cold. Nonie getting
very naughty, so disobedient. Walked just round pergola with Maudie
but afraud she will take cold, w’d not put on jacket. Lennie played evg.
Tuesday April 26
Returned fr. Balcombe by 10.15 train. Breakfasted downstairs with
Lennie & F.W. F. saw me to Station alone. Lin looks seedy I think & am
so sorry. Left Maudie looking little better, wish she w’d go to bed earlier.
Roy to drill. Had long talk with him on return. 2 to dinner.

Lovely morg. Wrote letters, pd cheques etc. To matinée with Lin at St
James, stupid piece. Roy & self dined alone. Quiet peaceful evg, to bed
early. Tea at Mrs Keith’s. Charming letter fr. darling Maud. 2 to dinner.

Mrs A. Mellor, 3.30 - 6.30. Elsie McLaren’s wedding to young Johnson
Ferguson at St Margaret’s Westminster 2.30, & 43 Belgrave Sqre. Dullish
wedding, great crowd. Lin’s drawings beautiful. Bride & bridegroom
went away in motor! Met heaps of friends. Called on Mrs J. Aird, Mrs
Palmer & Mrs Mellor. Roy out to dinner. 2 to dinner.

Evie Fletcher coming 12 o’c. for week. 3 to dinner, 4 to luncheon.
Academy Private View. Midge returned fr. Paris. Great crowd at
Piccadilly, saw many we knew. Darling arrived for luncheon brought
lovely flowers. Evie also. Maudie remained until we left for Academy.
She dined with Mr Stewart & went to Ball for short time Goldsmith’s Cy.

Small at home 4.30. 32 about came. Mrs Sells & Ellen to help. Cost
Babillon. Hills 4 window boxes, ferns & cases. Mrs Sells 2/6, Ellen 4/6,
hire urn etc. Lin giving dinner at his Club, 9. Evie & self dined at Ada
S.J’s. 10 to dinner, cab 2/-. Vy pleasant evg. V. tired. Darling Maud to
luncheon, great help c’d not have done without her. F. Walford to lunch
also. Very late with everything in future all must be ready by one o’c,
shocking muddle. Plenty of everything & Ellen a great help in arranging
table etc.

To Sir Benjamin Baker till Monday, Pangbourne. Not going. Lin & self to
Balcombe by 10.40, arrived 11.4. No crowd or fuss at station, raining.
Lennie left for week’s camp at 4.30 in car which he is keeping with him
at Arundel. Roy with Mr Stern to Oxford on motor. Dora & Mr Foley leave
Coburg Hotel for Stoke Edith. Midge goes to them Monday.

Dull morg, fine later. To Church with darling Maud & Toula & remained
to Communion. Rested after lunch with Maudie who slept. Long walk
after tea with Lin & rather tired. Babies down after tea. Wonderful
improvement in Nonie boy’s behaviour jusque ici. Maudie played
pianola, not (illeg). To bed early.

Lovely day. Maudie alone to luncheon at Mrs Hohler’s. Went for long
walk with Lin. Maudie back about 6 none the worse for long drive. To

Letter fr. dear Lin. Dull morg, fine later. Lennie arrived during luncheon
looking very well. Lin did not come. Lennie & I heard sound of a carriage
driving up after lunch but saw none from window. Met Maud in hall who

went with Lennie round garden before dinner. 2 letters fr. Japan fr.

Messel dines with them at Glouc. Ter. 7 to dinner Mrs L’s, Mr Ansdell, a
pretty girl & one other man. Roy out to dinner v. late home.

Roy looking vy seedy, & perverse. Darling fetched me at 11.30, drove to
Mde. Clare’s & Coburg & Barkers. Bought (illeg) & flowers. 2 boxes fr.
Balcombe. Maudie to luncheon. Lady Armstrong, Lady Henderson, Miss
Barran, Fanny Nembhard, Mrs Gibson & Mrs Harold M, Mrs Mount
Batten & dau, Mervyn & Ethel, Mrs Gill, Miss Rose Innes. Lin finished
early 9 o’c. Lennie fetched Maudie. Roy out to dinner & dance, v. late

Roy not down until 10 o’c! Out all day. Maud & Lennie to Mrs Hohler’s,
Lowfield Heath. Lin goes on Vectis, P & O yacht until Tuesday, left 9 o’c.
Geoff Con comes till Monday for Exam. I go to lunch with Midge, Coburg
1.45. Dine there instead. Roy dined out & to dance. Out morg, met Mrs
Gill, Annie Tweedie, Mrs Mackenzie. Shop’d & ordered wreath. Small
rememberence Lady Hickman 3/6, & called to enquire for & saw her. Sir
A & J.H. just off in motor. Dined alone with Midge, Coburg.

Tilda to luncheon. Geoff & self to enquire after Mrs Messel, saw Harold &
Hilda. Roy, Geoff, Toula & self to luncheon, returned home in omnibus.
Midge called at tea time, vy well & lively. Geoff to Sp’s later. Roy dines

Lady Armstrong 4 - 7. Midge & I go D.V. to Broadstairs to visit our
beloved Parents’ grave. Geoff Con leaves us for Mrs English. Fetched
Midge fr. Coburg. Had vy happy day, the grounds at St Peter’s better
kept than I have ever seen them & Church beautiful, new vestry rooms.
We drove to Westwood, vy overgrown but lovely trees. Saw Midge
home. Sat out on Parade & saw lodgings.

Lady Romer’s dinner 8 o’c. Mrs Sidney Cotton’s dinner. Delightful dinner
& most charming family. Lord Justice took me in, his brother (illeg).
Dora, Midge, Mrs Palgrave Simpson, Rawlinson, Barran, Rose Innes, Gill
etc called. Out morg. Dear Lin returned fr. his cruise on P. & O. Steamer

Dora & Paul to Brown’s Hotel for 2 weeks. Lady Nottage 4 o’c. Mrs
Maginis 3.30 - 6, 8 Craven Hill Gds. Academy Soirée 9 o’c. Lady
Henderson 4.30 – 7, 18 Arlington St. Effie comes for 3 nights. Both my
girls with bad places, one on arm, M. finger. Maudie fetched me 3.30,
called on Dora, Mrs Laking, Thorneycrofts, Ritchie, Pearson, & at home
Lady H. Roy & I to Academy alone, v. full. Saw oceans of friends,
Wickliffe Taylor etc. Roy looked v. tired. Maud & Lennie there after
dining at Mrs Fleischman’s.

dressmaker Notting Hill with Geoff morg. Geoff lunched with Dora at
Browns. Roy dined here & went after to join Lennie & M’s dinner party at
Carlton, Foleys there. Most delightful dinner & company at Mrs R’s,
enjoyed our evg. immensely. Excellent dinner.

Fête Regent’s Park. Unable to go. Made calls, 15! instead. Gave 2
Regent’s Park tickets to Hilda. Geoff lunched with Tabbie at Carlton. Lin

Charming company. I taken in by young German Lieut who created
sensation by being dismissed service by writing book “Seven years in a
Garrison town”. Most interesting man 26 years of age. 80 to lunch! Mr

fr. the Terrace for summer holidays except Mrs Spofforth. Dr Orton v.
well & lively, stayed talking until 12 o’c. Ada Sp. called just as I was
dressing for dinner. White soup, whiting, tongue, mutton. Cherry tart,

Otley has to go to see about Lin’s electric light at Herbert Moore, 3
Stratford Rd, Marloes Road. More rumpus between Margarith & Frances.
Mervyn left directly after breakfast. Roy lunching with him today. Roy
does not take advantage of his many opportunities, seems so lifeless &
unenterprising. Could get all Mervyn’s & Ethel’s family business if he
chose to exert himself. Roy out to dinner. X. Lin’s electric light went out
suddenly. Con came at 10 PM stayed an hour, had arrived fr. Dresden
this morning.

Lovely day. Turned out drawing room with Margarith, brushed & covered

things generally. Roy out to dinner with Sterne, doing better. Sat in
morg. room after dinner.

Margarith out afternoon & evg. F. managed better alone. Punch dinner
tonight on account of Lin, & at Savoy Hotel. Roy & self alone. Il m’enuit
beauc. qu’il ne elevient plus serieux, c’est si mal eleve d’etre toujours si
(illeg) et jamais serieux, sa future m’inquiete beauc.
Wednesday 10 August
Lovely day. Packed. In all day & vy tired leaving all dresses ready in
labelled boxes ready to be forwarded if needed Harrogate. Midge very
smart & looking very well burst in on me at 11.00. Had just returned
today fr. Scotland. Have taken Ripley’s place near Ludlow, fine shoot.
Was vy amusing. Roy out to dinner. He is giving dinner at Garrick to
Sterne etc.
Thursday 11 August
Mrs Phipson Beale’s invitation Lin & self till 25th inst. Wet & dull! Cooler.
Finished packing. White here early with my bodice & skirt black muslin,
charged for this & renovating old black satin £1.9.8.
Friday 12 August
Bag 32 grouse. Frances Johns leaves 11 o’c. Heavenly day. Arrived after
comfortable journey but sleepless (Lin slept fortunately) at 5.5, Castle
Stewart. V. good 2 horsed fly closed to meet us pd 25/- for it! Drove to
Drumlanford in 2 hours. Beautifully situated tho’ v. wild & isolated on hill
overlooking beautiful lake. Plain comfortable & well ordered house.

Wet & very blowey, shooters off later on foot. Lin very burnt. Wrote
engaging room Wellington Hotel for 24th inst. In all day. Played Bridge &
won, glad no money played for. To bed early. Very quiet delightful day &
good company.

Alternate fine & showery, high wind. Went for walk, lovely surroundings
& country. To bed early.
Monday 15 August
Lovely day, less windy. Shooters off early. Worked in evg. Drove at 2.30
to Barr Hill, lovely drive & clean little village of one street. Took washing
to laundress, walked after. Played Bridge evg, our host my partner won
again. The 4 cigars round gave me headache. Mr Borthwick coached me.

Lovely morg. Shooters off ¼ to 10. Wrote to Hotel Harrogate abut room
for 23rd instead of 24th, tiresome Lin altering now, misread Mr Wolff’s
letter. Walked & had a delightful day & evg. Bridge & won.

Blinds & windows to be done by Harrods. No, not until next Tuesday
23rd. Pouring wet day. Went for long walk after tea with Miss Thomson.
Gentlemaen fished after tea, one large salmon caught. Bridge evg &
again won.

& Mr Young, saw lovely view over valley & drove back at once. Mrs Tuer

fr. Midge asking us for a fortnight to their new place.
Friday 19 August
Fine day. Mr Smith factor & son came over, had tea, & we ladies drove
them to Barrhill. Letter from Dora again asking us for the 3rd Sep. for
week or longer. Hamilton will be there also. Lin may go for weekend till
Wed.

with glorious views of hills and moor all round& the peaks of Arran.

Capt & Mrs Jones. Wrote after, & to bed 9 o’c. Arranged for Bath
Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday. No letter fr. my own. Expenses stamps

Fine early, dull later. Very cold. Youngish fair lady came & introduced
herself whilst I was writing as Mrs Adam’s sis-in-law. She seems nice
but her husband seems devoid of manners. Letters fr. dear Lin & my
darling, so glad to get them. Read morg. Alone in drawing room 3.30.

Lovely day. Sat out morg. knitting. For lovely drive with Mr & Mrs
Simmonds to Spofforth & Follyfoot where we saw stocks outside Park
gates! Must be very old. Also horse being broken. Cap’t & Mrs Jones
took me to Kursaal after dinner, heard Ada Reeve, delightful. Good
performance. Home by 10.30. Paper 1d, water 6d, total 7d.

Breakfasted in bed, v. tired. H. to London for day. Rained all day. Midge

Dull & colder. Hamilton returned from London, some mistake about
carriage to meet him so he walked from Station home, not pleased. Had

Maud not vy happy I fear at Bedstone, overtired walking.

Lunch at 1 o’c with Edgar & Sophy. Went by om, excellent lunch. Cheese
omelette, roast pheasant, braised celery & coffee at Paginis. Sophy also
who left earlier. Edgar & I sat on & then walked to Piccadilly when he
saw me into an om. Paid Mirette, Sloane St, £10.10.0. for white satin
dress. Wedding day, 30 years! Champagne. Roy home for dinner. He
called on Fanny Barker & Edgar, both in. Kept his cab!
Friday 21 October
Roy lost £50 in American deal. To dress maker early, velvetine blouse
fitted. Vy seedy with trying Mrs Beale’s cure, so far no good. Gompels
about ill fitting jacket. In all afternoon. Lin not finished until 10.15. Roy
depressed, wish he had more pluck & energy, seems to hopelessly rely
on others always instead of on himself.

depressed again over losses. Wish he had more energy.

Maudie & Nonie called & had lunch here. Nonie as good as gold, Maudie
looks vy well. Out early to Westbourne Grove about maids. One called
evg. from 9 Talbot Rd, Mrs V’s french girl. Roy dined with Mr Yorke & to
Bouchiers theatre after, our box. Great commotion about Baltic fleet
firing on our Hull fishermen. Sir J. Aird wrote for Lin’s drawing this
week.

Miss Venning’s wedding. Out morg. to Bank & Harrods. 2 prs gloves
5/11. Dressing gown 29/6. Hat £1.1.0. Rags v. dirty in morg room on sofa
& had been rolling, filthy dog. Darling Maud & Nonie came after wedding
looking sweet. Roy out to dinner, Great commotion his hat! & dirty dog!

Russian Baltic fleet. Packed morg. Saw french maid Marie Perrot who
seemed to think she could do work. Settled to take her if character

journey & Lennie & Maud seem vy well. Baby Oliver much grown, vy
sweet, image of Lennie. Little Anne v. sweet & so fair. To bed early.

so warm, & read. Walked round garden with Maudie, gathered violets for

& 3 rabbits, v. good. Hilda went over to Nymans for the day. Mrs Messel
better. Maudie’s cold better. Mrs Hayworth Booth & her little boys to tea,
amusing. Wrote french housemaid.
Tuesday 8 November
Mrs Rooth at home 3 - 6.30. Postponed till 15th. Lennie had to remain in
London night, slept at Harold’s on account of American election!
Roosefelt re-elected. Mr Brough arrived. Lin, Maud & self only. Very
amusing man & very like Geoff Conrad. Met Maud years ago at the
Nicols, also knows Mr Blair. Lin & self for walk to Mill. Saw little lady
working in her garden. Roosefelt re-elected.
Wednesday 9 November
Wet & gusty. Lin went up by 2nd train. After lunch Maud, Mr Brough &
self went for walk to the Mill, quite warm tho’ heavy & dull. Saw little Mill
lady working in her garden in white smock & cap. Went over cottage. V.
clever interesting woman, her chicks to tea here. Lennie returned. Made
me £8 by spec in Vickers Maxim. All morg. arranging Maud’s position for
portrait, she looked sweet & Mr B. seems charmed with his subject.

Lovely day. Maud sat all morg for her portrait, F. & self with her
alternately. Lin arrived first train & shot with Lennie at Nymans. Over 168
head of game but no champagne at dinner!!! Odd of Lennie. Darling v.
worried as cook sent up wretched dinner. Maudie, Mr B, F.W. & self for
walk. Lennie v. pleased with picture. Lin fell when shooting & felt the
shock rather evg. Otley came down by night train. V. pleasant evg, Mr B.
distinctly an acquisition here, so clever & appreciative.

Lovely day. To Church with F. Walford & Maud & Nonie boy. Lennie, Lin
& Mr Brough to Nymans morg in car, back to lunch. Maudie rested & F.
after lunch. I packed. Lennie & Mr Brough went for walk. Find latter a
great acquisition at table, so lively.

Mrs Toulmin 4 - 7, 5 Stanley Crescent, W. Miss Gill came to lunch & tea. I
went early to see cooks for Maud. Saw one I like, 7 yrs character, E.

took name & address. Saw groom ill treating beautiful blue roan mare.
Took name & address, Harley House. Gen. Black & Donna Linda at
Nembhards. Showed them new single bridge game, & Fanny left me at
15 U.P. St. Edgar gone. Quiet evg. Roy in. Lin dined ¼ to 10 o’c.

Out shops morg. Lin lunched out. Roy went with Mr Stern to Margate on
motor, sleeps night there. Lin & self to matinée “Veronique”, dull play,
by omnibus. Walked back. Tired. Lin & self alone to dinner.

dress. Orton says neglect & old wounds Marie, uncontageous. Relief.
Maudie unable to come & Con never turned up at 6 as he promised. C.

Thursday 24 November
Hard frost, fine. Unable to go out roads too slippery. Geoff Blair passed
1st in exam as Russian interpreter! Walked after luncheon for ½ an hour.
Maud & Lennie dining with Tabs at Claridges & went together to see
picture at Mr Brough’s studio & had tea there. Roy, Lin & self in to
dinner, sat in drawing room.

Lin & self lunch at 2 o’c with the Pirries. Delightful luncheon. Bitterly
cold day. Dr O. called morg. to see Lin, giving him tonic. Drove to & fr.

Mrs Maude looked v. pretty.

luncheon, arrived in car. Looks vy well. Left in car at 3 o’c. Geoff Blair

Mabel Beaumont 3 - 7. Out morg. Raining hard, to dress maker 11 o’c,
Barkers, & home. Mended. So wet no one came. Called & saw Florence
Blair. Letters fr. Lin seems to be enjoying his visit to McLarens.

Mabel Beaumont 3 - 7. Lin arrives in time for breakfast, travels all night.
Thursday 8 December
Lin & self go to Mrs Johnson Ferguson. Left at 8.30. V. comfortable
journey to Carlisle. Walked with Lin, saw Cathedral & met Miss Barran.
To tea with her where her brother joined us & after Mr & Mrs Newman
also going to Springkell, & Mr & Mrs Donner & Mr B. Mr & Mrs Alec F.J.
& Miss White making party 14. Talked evg. No games.

Walked to see shooters in Park, stood with Lin & Miss White. Ladies
lunched at House. Talked, rested. Played Bridge with Mr Donner, Mr
Ferguson, Miss White, & lost by 214 points. Lovely day, bitterly cold.

Ryle. Played Bridge after dinner, won by over 300 points. Bed 11.30.

Heavenly morg. To Church. Borrowed 6d off Miss Barran, repaid it. V.
great draft in Church. Mr F.J. went v. righteous. Walked after luncheon
with Mr Ferguson, Lin joined us. Long walk. Rested after. Mr Donner left.
13 to dinner. Talked evg, late to bed.
Monday 12 December
Lovely day. Tramped up & down an hour waiting for shooters. Came,
rest went on with them. Mrs Donner & self returned & I packed.
Luncheon. Finished packing & rested in my room. No bridge after
dinner. Alec took me in, v. talkative. Late to bed, but slept.
Tuesday 13 December
Leave Springkell. Lovely crisp hard frost & sun. Left at 10 o’c. The
Newmans, Barrons, Miss White & Mrs Donner travelled alone, met at
Carlisle to shop, had to rush away. Had carriage reserved. Saw Barrans
& Newmans who passed us for luncheon. Roy out to dinner. Quiet evg.

I dine at Mrs Vaughan Morgan’s 7.45 alone. Pouring with rain all day &
very dark. Vy bad dinner but vy pleasant evg, large party. Roy dined at

couple. She sang 3 songs delightfully.

Beastly fog. To be fitted 12 o’c, find her sister to Beerbohm Tree!
Wondered why she reminded me of someone. X. Dr O. came to see Lin,
seems vy seedy & I was awake 5 times in night with him. He eat no
breakfast & only fried sole & milk pud & biscuit for luncheon. Midge &
Dora dine here. X. Left silver cigar cutter at Mrs Morgans for L.

Met Lennie, Donna Linda, Mr & Mrs Hohler, came in same train. Great
scramble to get dressed. Rather late to bed. Darling Maud looking v.

We all went over at 3 o’c to Nymans. Took our evening dresses &
dressed there. Party of 23 at dinner. Danced after & I sat with Lin & Dr
Messel in billiard room. Babies there early & Lennie, Geoff, Florence, Mr
Marriott & Mr Hohler to luncheon there. Tree, presents. V. pleasant day,
late home 1.30. Roy to Bedstone for Xmas.
Sunday 25 December
To church with little Linley, Florence, Donna Linda, Maud, Lennie, Mr
Marriott, Mrs Hohler & Geoff. Maudie gave all most lovely presents, mine
moleskin muff & tippet perfectly lovely. Played charades evg. & cobweb
American game. Delightful day, not to bed till 1 o’c.
Monday 26 December
Maud’s dance. Went for walk morg. with Mrs Hohler. Lennie, Linley,
Hohler to Nymans for shooting. Very great success dance, about 55
came. Kept up until 2 o’c. Good music. Maudie looked sweet in cream
lace & net dress.
Tuesday 27 December
V. cold, damp. In bed till 11.30. Fog walk after luncheon with Mrs Hohler.
Met the Shepherd & Mrs Thring. Donna L, Mr H, Geoff & Florence to E.
Grinstead in car. Lennie staying at the Hohlers. Roy returns fr. Midge’s,
