Closing: Resubmit any incomplete/missing work. Update Science Journal Page Numbers: Add completed/graded work to your science journal. Answer the following: 1. Which of the following does the nervous system do? a. regulates the body’s activities b. responds to stimuli c. transmits nerve impulses d. activates muscles e. e. all of the above 2. What hemisphere (side) of the brain is responsible for logical reasoning, analytical, and math skills? a. right hemisphere b. left hemisphere c. medulla d. top e. none of the above 3. What hemisphere (side) of the brain is responsible for creativity, emotions, art, and music skills? a. right hemisphere b. left hemisphere c. medulla d. top e. none of the above Name__________________________________ Date 02/15/17 Science Journal Page 27 Period__________ Teachers: Mrs. Cabak & Mrs. Osakwe / Life Science – 7th Grade Topic: Unit 4 Human Body Systems – Nervous System, Day 2 Inquiry Question: Your goal is to answer this question… What are the different systems of the body and how do they interact to fulfill an organism’s needs? Focus on interaction with the nervous systems. 1. Please enter the room quietly and sit in your assigned seat. Remember you need a pencil (sharpener) and agenda on your desk. Place your personal items under your seat. 2. You will need a book, pen or pencil, this paper, and your science journal (composition notebook) (and colored pencils) 3. Start the Bell Ringer, complete the activity, and closing 4. Finish any incomplete/missing work graded below 70 and turn it in. 5. Update your composition notebook with returned assignments that do not need to be resubmitted. Objectives: 1. Describe the functions of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. 2. Draw and label the structure of a motor neuron inside a nerve to the muscle 3. Describe one disease of the nervous system: Alzheimer’s Bell Ringer: What is a neuron?_______________________________________ What is the function of a neuron?___________________________ ?_____________________________________________________ Online Text: https://my.hrw.com/ (username: Cabak2017 Password: student) Opening: Human Nervous System (youtube) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aboVLnsCH44 Activity: Read the passage on Nerves. Circle the word Nerve and underline the definition. The central nervous system is connected to the rest of your body by nerves. A nerve is a collection of axons bundled together with blood vessels and connective tissue. Nerves are everywhere in your body. Most nerves have axons of both sensory neurons and motor neurons. Axons are parts of nerves, but nerves are more than just axons. Figure 3 shows the structure of a nerve. The axon in this nerve transmits information from the spinal cord to muscle fibers Fill in the blanks (p. 658, Figure 3) A message from the brain travels down the _________________ ____________, then along the axon of a __________________neuron inside a nerve to the muscle. The message makes the message contract. Draw and label Structure of a Neuron (p.658, Figure 3) Label: Spinal cord, nerve, axon, axon terminal, and muscle fiber The Central Nervous System Read the passage on the cerebrum (part of the brain – control center) The largest part of your brain is called the cerebrum. It controls voluntary movements and allows you to sense touch, light, sound, odors, taste, pain, heat, and cold. The cerebrum has two halves, called hemispheres. The left hemisphere directs the right side of the body, and the right hemisphere directs the left side of the body. Figure 4 shows some of the activities that each hemisphere controls. However, most brain activities use both hemispheres. Fill in the blanks (p.660, Figure 4) The left hemisphere primarily controls activities such as 1. ______________________________ 2. ______________________________ 3. ______________________________ 4. ______________________________ The right hemisphere primarily controls activities such as 1. ______________________________ 2. ______________________________ 3. ______________________________ *** Disease/Disorder – Real World Connection *** According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia among older adults. It is the fifth leading cause of death for adults aged 65 years and older, and the sixth leading cause of death for all adults. Alzheimer’s disease involves parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language and over time can seriously affect a person’s ability to carry out daily activities. Known risk factors include increased age and having a family history of Alzheimer’s disease. Currently, there is no prevention or cure. Treatment options involve delaying or managing symptoms and care planning.
