Feed the Lawn: If you want that rich green lawn in spring, it needs some attention now. Talk to your local nursery about the right nutrients to apply to your lawn in fall, and fertilize one last time! Turn off exterior faucets: Undrained water that freezes in pipes will expand and can burst. Start by disconnecting all garden hoses and draining water still in faucets. If you don’t have frost-proof faucets (homes built before ten to 12 years ago typically do not) — turn off the shut-off valve inside your home.. Plant Fall Annuals: Mums, pansies and kale will flourish and add color to those planters and pots well into fall. Install a programmable thermostat: Or, if you already have one — double-check the settings. Energy Star says that, on average, for an initial investment of $50 to $100, you will save $180 annually on heating (and cooling) bills if in winter you keep the thermostat set to no higher than 70 degrees Fahrenheit when you’re at home and awake and no more than 62 degrees when you’re away or asleep. Check your heating system: Make sure it’s performing at its optimum level — clean or replace dirty furnace filters and have a professional inspect your heating system Clean gutters: Once the majority of the autumn leaves have fallen, clear out those gutters and downspouts — clogged gutters can lead to pooling water and damage roofing, siding and wood trim, plus cause leaks and ice dams. NOW…………….. Have fun and enjoy the beautiful fall weather: If you have a fire-pit, give it a good cleaning and fill it with lots of well-seasoned hardwood for those weekend marshmallow roasts and ghost stories [ Halloween will be here before you know it ] Credit Kiplinger, BHG, Garden glove and houzz THE HEALTHY HOME REVIEW PUMPKIN BREAD INGREDIENTS: • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 large eggs • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 2 cups sugar • 1 teaspoon ground cloves • 1-1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened • 1 15-ounce can 100% pure pumpkin (I use Libby’s) Prep Time: 20 min - Cook: 65 min Servings; 2 loaves 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Generously grease two 8 ½” x 4 ½” loaf pans with butter and dust with flour (or use a baking spray with flour). 2. Combine flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and spices in a bowl; use a whisk to mix well and set aside. 3. In a large electric mixer bowl, at medium speed, beat butter and sugar until just blended. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Continue beating until very light and fluffy. Beat in pumpkin. The mixture might look grainy and curdled at this point -- that’s ok. 4. At low speed, beat in flour mixture until well combined. 5. Turn batter into prepared pans, dividing evenly, and bake for 65 minutes, or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Let loaves cool in pan about 10 minutes, then turn out on wire rack to cool completely. (If the loaves stick, run a plastic knife around the edges of the pan to loosen them.) 6. Fresh out of the oven, the loaves have a deliciously crisp crust. If they last beyond a day, you can toast individual slices to get the same fresh-baked effect. The copper in their blood gives their blood a bluish tint. It is much like how iron in our blood causes our blood to be red. Most elephants weigh less than a blue whale’s tongue. The world’s tallest snowman was created in Bethel, Maine in 2008. It measured in at 122 feet / 1 inch and weighed 13,000,000 lbs. You can’t plow a cotton field with an elephant in North Carolina. The world record for the farthest flight by a paper aircraft is 226.8 feet (69.1 meters). When you crack a whip, it makes a sharp sound because the tip of the whip is traveling faster than the speed of sound. It is a sort of mini sonic boom. U M P, PA DAM RAWLS C the answer.... EMESEAL SYSTEM answer and rules on page 4 The “Stack Effect” — amazingly, over 50% of your home’s air comes from your crawl space. As warm air rises, cool air from the crawl space is sucked into the living areas of your home. Called the “stack effect”, it’s the same way a chimney works. This — combined with other factors — means a significant amount of the air you breathe actually came from your crawl space. The Emeseal Crawlspace System will reduce moisture, soil gases, mold, mildew and improve the overall air quality in your crawl space — the air you breathe in your home will be cleaner and healthier. Scientific studies all agree: the key to mold control is moisture control. Molds produce allergens, irritants, and potentially toxic substances. Mold is present in every home, as well as outdoors, but without moisture it can not grow to harmful levels. A dirt/stone crawl space is by far the #1 source of moisture in any home, letting in gallons of water each day in the form of water vapor. The EmeSeal Crawlspace System will eliminate this source of moisture and rid your home of musty smells from mold and mildew. RESULT - A healthier home A Purrr-fectly Happy and Safe Fall Season Pumpkin; Not Just for Pie - Did you know that canned pumpkin is good for your dog’s diet? The soluble fiber in pumpkin can help with digestive issues, while the antioxidants and essential fatty acids in the seeds promote healthy skin and fur and urinary health. Keep School Supplies Out of Paws’ Reach - Fall is backto-school time, and those of you with young children know that means stocking up on items like glue sticks, pencils and magic markers. Although these items are considered low toxicity to pets, gastrointestinal upset and blockages can occur if ingested. Potpourri - The scent of potpourri in the air, especially at this time of year, can be soothing to us. Keep in mind, however, that those holiday scents may also seem pretty inviting to a food-driven pet. Be careful if using any liquidtype potpourri — found in potpourri pots or warmers — to scent your house. The liquid is typically a mixture of essential oils and cationic detergents. If ingested, the cationic detergents can cause severe chemical burns to the mouth and stomach. Keep an Eye Out for Pests - The fall months are known for all kinds of pests, the most common of which are fleas and ticks. Check your pet after coming indoors to make sure they aren’t bringing in any unwanted guests. • Lower energy costs • Seal out harmful gases • Stop mold causing moisture • Provide a safe, clean storage area Beware of Allergies - You’re not the only one who can get the curse of fall allergies. Your pet can be just as susceptible to allergens as you. If you see your pet itching more than usual, you might want to check with the vet to identify any possible allergies Credit ASPCA , BH&G THE HEALTHY HOME REVIEW COURTESY OF: Licensed • • • • • • • • • • Bonded Illiana Basement Waterproofing Insured Foundation Crack Repair Foundation Stabilization Interior/Exterior Drain Tile Yard Drainage Sump Pumps Crawlspace Encapsulation Foundation Sealing Moisture Proof Wall Liners Above Grade Brick Sealing Garage, Basement Floor and Driveway Crack Repair 219-840-2837 www.leakyprofessor.com The Healthy Home Review Fall 2016 e su is is h t de Insi ecipe R P H Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.
