President’s Message
Rick Price ~ AHGC President
On behalf of the AHGC Board of
Directors, I wish all our membership and their families a very
Happy New Year!!! And, I am
sure many of you like myself are
hoping 2011 will be even better
than 2010.
As the club goes, 2010 was a relatively good year. The membership came in just under 700,
which was projected at the beginning of the year. There has been
a steady decline over the last four
years, but hopefully it has stabilized and we can begin working
toward increasing those numbers
to where they once were, between 850 and 1,000. The club
expenditures were within the
budget, thanks mainly to our
Treasurer Gary Younglove’s hard
and diligent work. There were a
few hiccups during the year including the delay in the restaurant renovations, but for the
most part, AHGC and Empire
Golf have been working well together.
During this time of season with
it’s short days and wet storms, I
often think back over events and
circumstances that have effected
the course during the last several
years. The common complaint
this season has been “it’s raining
again.” Last year it was “the
frost,” the year before “rain,”
the year before “frost” and on
and on. Maybe farmers have it
right, meaning it will either rain
a lot, or it’s going to be cold.
This leads me to the next question: If we will always have one
of the two types of winters, why
does it seem like every year the
course management is crying
poor because of the weather?
Maybe projections need to
change, or maybe the County is
really a group of farmers. But
my parent’s families were farmers and you never saw a group
that was always crying poor like
they are and blaming it on the
weather.
One irony of the situation is
that a considerable sum of
money was spent by the county
between 1995 and 1997 to construct concrete cart paths so
that the cart fees would keep
coming in when the rain hit.
But now when it rains, the carts
are not allowed out because apparently the labor costs of keeping the cart barn open when so
few are golfing is not worth it.
I’m no accountant, but wow!!
Let’s hope for an improvement
in 2011.

A New Year Welcome To All Midweek Players!
Happy New Year to one of the finest public golf
clubs in all of the NCGA!
Another year of weekday tournament competition has
been completed. We were blessed with fine weather,
avoided frost delays and rain for the most part, except for
that one monsoon. We have experienced a full year with the
Ancil Hoffman web site online tournament entry system,
which has been most beneficial to this director for managing
events. The web master, Ron Salvatori, has done a great job
in setting up the system and providing prompt assistance with
the administration of it. New members please use the system
for entry to Midweek events, direct any questions about the
procedure to the tournament director, Danny Gore at
[email protected] . When contacting the director, email is
preferred. This leaves a paper trail and will help avoid
problems from the faulty memory syndrome. Phone contact
would be (916) 774-6697; again, email first if possible. There
often are withdrawals from events, opening spots for play. If
you have a late opportunity to get out to the course, check
the web site tee time sheet for available slots as the site will
be updated continuously until tournament day.
A recap for the last quarter tournament flight payouts has
the big winner Scott Mraule with $211. Following are Clyde
Vickers with $197, Rob Dixon with $195, Dennis Pedersen
(who was also the Wayne Parsell Net Champion –
congratulations!) with $190 and Steve Cushing at $180. A fine
bunch of fellows for the most part. And congratulations to all
participants; Mark Sicner scored an ace, the second in
Midweek play in 2010, and there were 22 players that won
over $100 in pro shop credits during the quarter.
The 2011 Midweek Tournament Schedule is available on
the web site and posted in the tournament room. We will
continue Closest to the Pin prizes and to run the Five Dollar
Skins Game with all events which allow these contests. Our
next event is on January 20 and is an Individual Stroke Play
event. This tournament is a postable round for the NCGA
and can provide one of the two required rounds within the
prior twelve month period for eligibility for NCGA Qualifier
or Ancil Hoffman Golf Club “Major” (Club Championship for
example) events. In February we will present the two person
team Chapman/Best Ball/Scramble event. For tournament
format questions or any inquiries, please do not hesitate to
contact the director.
Mark your calendars, come out and have a good time with
the weekday tournament players.
Another year has ended and a fine
tournament season it was. We dodged the rain
(barely) and were able to conduct all 12 events
yet again. The 2011 season will look much the
same as last year with several individual stroke
events, NCGA Qualifiers, and the Club
Championships. I like to throw in a new format
from time to time, but the Cha, Cha, Cha event
the past seasons seems to be widely popular and
you will see that again for 2011. If you know of
any other interesting formats that allow for
members of a team to play their own shot the
entire day, let me know.
Running the tournaments the past few years has
been very enjoyable and for the most part a
relatively smooth process. I’ve been able to get
volunteers for each event to help with scoring,
skins games, and pace of play monitoring. Those
volunteers have included Greg Hovious, Rick
Price, Rob Dixon, Mike Ong, Ray Cheung and a
few others that have stuck around for an hour or
two after their round.
I’ve commented in the past regarding payment for
tournaments up front and I feel the need to stress
the importance of that again. There is a lot going
on during the tournament and as a result, I’d like
to avoid handling a lot of cash on those days.
Please do your best to either submit payment in
advance or pay by check the day of the event.
I look forward to serving on the board again in
2011 and will see you at our first event on
January 15th!
Here’s to the beginning of another fine
golfing season!

Greetings For 2010
I was doing a ‘google’ search for new rules for 2011
hoping the penalty for out of bounds/ lost ball would
be reduced to a mulligan --- no such luck!
However, I did come across something that I was
not aware was available. The United States Golf Association has a downloadable IPhone / Blackberry /
Android application for the 2010-2011 editions of
“ T h e
R u l e s
o f
G o l f . .
This Rules of Golf Application is designed for golfers
who want instant access to the official rules and decisions. With this application, which features simple
navigation and a convenient word and phrase search
function, users can quickly answer questions about
every rule, definition and decision. The new technology is the only rules application approved by the
USGA.
Users can also e-mail the USGA directly from the
application with a Rules question. This mobile application now gives golfers a new way to seek answers
from the USGA, which answers more than 15,000
Rules questions each year.
The iPhone was the ideal initial platform for the application given the vast distribution of iPhone applications. The USGA did extend the application onto
the BlackBerry and Android operating systems.

The wet weather continues to dictate what we can accomplish so far this fall/winter. Thankfully we have
had minimal damage from the storms that have brought 12 inches of rain to Ancil Hoffman so far this season. We usually average around 18-20 inches annually so we are 60% of our way there before the two
wettest months of the year!
The Ryegrass seed continues to fill in the rows of verti-cutting in the fairways. I believe the fairways will
be much better in the year to come from this activity and each year they will continue to improve. Next
season we will verti-cut the fairways in early October.
The greens are filling in nicely and the verti-cutting and sanding we did in November is helping the surface dry up a little quicker during all the storms. We have begun putting electrical wire underground to
the greens for the new irrigation controls and hope to have all the new sprinkler heads in by the end of
March. Once the wire is in the ground you will see us trenching and installing pipe.
The new #14 green is looking better. I hope some of you were able to come on Christmas Eve and try it
out. We are waiting for a break in the weather for it to dry out and open it permanently.
The tee projects also require a break in the weather to move forward. Once we get a dry stretch we will
begin hauling soil to #9, #4, #5, #16, and #12. The NCGA is scheduled to come out on April 19 to re-rate
the course so we are planning on having the new tees ready by then.
This past year was very difficult in many ways. The weather and the economy affected our income and
how much we could accomplish all the way around the property, but I’m looking forward to a new year
with many new opportunities. I am hopeful that 2011 will be a turning point for Ancil Hoffman and for
those who make Ancil Hoffman their home course.
Thanks again for your patience while we try to improve an old gem.
From The Publisher
Clyde Vickers
Well, another year of birdies, eagles, pars, holes in one, triple bogeys, high scores, low scores, leaf rules, lost balls,
found balls, yellow balls, cart girls, golf lessons, topped shots, cursed shots, banana slices, duck hooks, worm burners, missed greens, punched greens, fast greens, slow greens, frost delays, wet rounds, hot rounds, windy rounds,
slow rounds, fast rounds, back pins, front pins, and pin heads has passed, and we can’t wait to get out there and do
it all over again 2011. How lucky we are to have this game of golf to take us away from the worries of a troubled
world and give us something serious to consider, like a long down hill putt with a 5 foot break or whether the beverage cart will come by one more time before we finish our round. It’s all good fun, good exercise, and good competition at AHGC, and we all look forward to another year. See you all out there and Happy New Year!

Are You Ready To Improve Your Back
Swing?
New Clubs!
Carl and Dave were getting ready to
tee off on the first hole when Dave
noticed that Carl got a new set of
clubs. Dave asked Carl how he liked
the clubs and if they've helped his
game at all. Carl replied, "Oh yeah,
they're great clubs! They've added at
least 25 yards to my slices, about 30
yards to my hooks and you would be
surprised at the size of my divots!"
The Back Swing - It’s not about your arms!
Instead of thinking about the arms and swinging the club backwards,
try to think of the back swing as turning your back to the target.
You’re not swinging the club up in the air, instead you’re just putting
the club behind your back. Just winding that spring!
The back swing works from the top down. The back swing takeaway starts at the top with your arms and shoulder turn and works its
way down to your hips and legs.
The back swing is all about coiling up your body and creating the
muscle tension or torque needed to release a powerful downswing.
More specifically, resistance is created between the greater turning
of the upper body and shoulders and the lesser turning of the hips
and lower body.
Now for my back swing rule number one. Don’t get in a hurry! A
hurried back swing doesn’t make the downswing any faster. I think it
may be just the opposite. You’ve got to remember that somewhere
at the top of that back swing, you’ve got to change and go the exact
opposite direction.
The speed of your back swing should be at a steady tempo, not real
fast or real slow. The tendency is to go too fast. Any time your golf
swing begins to break down, the first correction is usually to slow
down the back swing.
