Where has the Year Gone? –
This year seems to have
flashed by in the blink of an
eye. When we started the year
we were planning events and
getting to know the new resort
management. As we finish
the year, we’re back to planning next year’s
schedule but with renewed enthusiasm and a
nicely solidified relationship with the new
resort management. It’s been a good and productive year!
Silverado CC Board Nominating Committee –
The Board’s new Nominating Committee was
comprised of Bill Trautman, Carol Lewis and
Tony Marko. They have met and come up
with a stellar slate of nominees. The following
nominees will be submitted at the Annual
Membership Meeting on December 8 for
election to the Board of Directors for a 3 year
term: Bob Sheehan, Men’s Golf; Paul
Roberts, Tennis; Ann Burchill, Mixed Golf.
You will receive your proxies in the mail within the next few weeks which will include short
biographies of each nominee. A big thank you
to the Nominating Committee on a job well
done!
Silverado Emergency Line Operating –
Earlier this year, we had two incidents involving members that collapsed and needed
emergency medical help. Fortunately Tim
Steers was close by and gave EMT help until
the ambulance arrived. The timing in both
cases was critical and the patients survived.
Later, Tim Steers organized emergency medical training for just under 200 members of
Silverado.
As an off-shoot of that training, the Board
enlisted the help of a fellow Board member,
Karen Sulenski, to see if there was anything
we could do to speed the process of calling for
and receiving medical assistance. Karen met
with our General Manager, John Evans and
his team, including head of Security, Jeff Van
Paris and the County Fire people (911).
Since Karen will be writing about this as well
I’ll just leave you with this. If someone goes
down and needs medical emergency help, call
911. Stay on the line until they have a good
idea exactly where you are and what the
problem is. Then, call Silverado Resort at
707-258-5478. This is a special emergency line
set-up by the resort to allow our emergency
people to guide the ambulance to the person
needing assistance.
The Silverado Resort has purchased additional
defibrillators that can be used to re-start a
heart. These will be located at four locations
on the Silverado Property. Special adhesive
tags will be available soon for your member
golf cart with these emergency numbers. Who
knows, if this speeds the response time by even
a few minutes, it could well save a life.

Buongiorno... this is your Men's Golf foreign

I am happy to report that the Junior Golf Program at Silverado
was the recipient of $ 455.00 as a result of an overage of funds
drawn for the Shotmaker Tourney. Thanks to the participants for not
playing as well as I thought they would!!!!! Just kidding, but thanks
to all of you from the Junior Golf Program,
September Club Championships turned out to be
very competitive and somewhat surprising, our two
day event saw some good play and a great comeback by our reigning champion Tim Tietjen shot a 79 in the opening round and came
back with a 69 on the final round to win the Club Championship for
the second year in a row. Rich Davis shot a net 133 to claim the
Club Net Championship. In the Seniors division Bob Callan shot
rounds of 76 and 78 to win the Seniors Division with154. Taking
the Seniors Net Flight with scores of 73 and 64 was John Fox.
The next, and final tournament of the year will take place on
Saturday, November 5th, Our annual MINI INVITATIONAL
and SKINS TOURNAMENT starts with breakfast at 07:30 and a
shotgun at 09:00 on the NORTH COURSE. There will be TEE
PRIZES and very small flights (10-12) for some nice prizes both in
the skin and flight winners (3) categories. All this will be followed
by a RIB LUNCHEON and the bestowing of AWARDS. If you
haven't played in this Tournament before, this year phone up a
golfing buddy and ENTER! You could make up a whole years
worth of losses with a win at this event!
Li’l Abner winners were Rich Tebay and his partner Diana
Peacock in the Hatfield flight with a 61, while Mark Coleman and
Linda Cantey won the McCoy flight with a 64. Congratulations to
all you little hillbillies and hillwilliams!
Our four club "Shotmaker" Tournament turned out to be a
success with 32 players trying to decide which four clubs to use.
It turned out only two players broke or played par to capture the
$100 prize. Dave Anderson shot a net 70 and John "dog" Davis
shot 71. Many others we only a shot back of par at 73 and I have to

Membership Appreciation Day
As the winter approaches, it is time once again for
us to celebrate all of you, our members, with the
annual Membership Appreciation Day. This
year’s golf event will feature a slightly different
format that should be a lot of fun for everyone. As
opposed to previous years, we want all of you to
sign up in the foursome that you would like to play with. If you
choose to register as a single or twosome, our staff will put your
foursome together. Although you will choose your playing partners,
your teammates will not be revealed to you until you come in from
your round! There are a few more surprises along the way to keep
it interesting! Check the website for more information.
In the Golf Shop, we will be having our traditional Membership
Sale from Thursday through Sunday, November 24-27. This year
we will be offering a 30% discount throughout the shop to our
membership. You’ll also find additional savings on other select
items. If you’re looking for holiday gifts, we’ve recently brought in
a few items that make would wonderful gifts for someone special.
Come in and check it out!
Guest Play
Please remember to register every guest with the Golf Shop. We
still have a number of members who are not registering any guests
and simply telling the starter (or in some cases, just going to the
first tee without notifying anyone). Also remember that guests are
restricted to playing at Silverado only 4 times per year.
A reminder that on the Saturday, November 26th we are having
our annual Membership Appreciation Day golf event hosted
by the Silverado Resort and I can promise you that JOHN
EVANS,TIM GEESEY and their staffs have a great event planned
with a new and exciting format… .
Remember folks "The game of golf is played on a 5 inch course
between your ears." Guess that's why I have such a hard time with
it. See you on the course! Ciao! Giuseppe
Troon Privé
There have been a few more questions about the Troon Privé
program and the ability of other Privé Club Members to play golf at
Silverado. For local private clubs, like El Macero, Marin and
Silver Creek, members are only allowed to play at Silverado 3
times per year. As we move into 2012, we are considering a few
other conditions that we will place on the rounds to ensure that we
create value for the Privé members, but maintain the spirit of the
agreement. In January’s Connection article, I will outline the
program.
Carts
Cart usage and its impact on our golf course will continue to be
an important part of our club. One of the wonderful features for
our membership is the ability to utilize their golf carts in the
community and on the course.
As golf carts continue to evolve and change, we will continue to
monitor the impact on our golf course. There are some street-ready
golf carts that are available on the market at this time – a few of you
are using some of these carts now. Some of these carts have curb
weights that are 3-4 times that of a traditional golf cart. We are
currently working with all of the cart companies to determine the
impact of that additional weight on our golf course. We will keep
the Board of Directors up to speed with our findings and let you
know if there will be future restrictions or limitations.
Until then, please continue to refer to the club’s rules regarding
carts and cart usage. If you don’t already have a copy they are
available on the website or by calling our Membership Coordinator,
Vanessa Braun.
MIXED GOLF
Karen Sulenski
In the Connection last month you learned about the
Board’s efforts to improve response time to golf
course emergencies. I want to take this opportunity
to thank the individuals who served on the
Emergency Response Committee: Jeff Van
Paris, Director of Security, Brian Schaffer and
Marshall Balata, staff from the Pro Shop, two
fire fighters from the our local Fire Department sent by Justin
Benguerel and Tim Steers, Silverado member and subject matter
expert. The contributions of these individuals was invaluable and
very much appreciated.
As mentioned in the October Connection, the golf cart stickers
outlining the steps to follow in an emergency will be available in the
Golf Pro Shop, the Cart Shop or by contacting Vanessa Braun in
the Membership Office at 707-257-5424. The new sticker will
help you to know what to do:
1. Call 911 - stay on the line if possible
2. Call 707- 258-5478 to reach the Silverado operator
3. Provide information about the exact location and the nature
or the emergency
Our final Mixed Golf tournament for the season, Golfing Fore the
Cure: Battle of the Sexes was a huge success. Over 90 members
and guests participated in the golf on the South course and dinner
arranged by Tony Monaco. Kudos to the men’s team for winning
the competition with a score of 89 under beating the women’s team
that came in with a total of 62 under. As a result the Prostate Cancer
foundation will receive 50% of the funds raised and the Komen
Foundation and American Cancer Society will divide the balance
unless specific funds were designated. Congratulations go to the
first place winners in the men’s flight, the team of Wray, Dwyer,
Renteria and Marko who came in at 21 under. Second place at 16
under was awarded to the team of Alexander, Clark, Coleman and
Smith. In the women’s flight, first place went to the team of
Anderson, Doyle, Crosby and Hattar - 16 under and second place
was awarded to Battisti, Shephard, Kimbrough and Bracco who
scored 14 under. Two places were awarded in the mixed couple
flight: first place to the team of Hewitt and Sisto at 21 under and
second place to Connolly, Ely and Morgan at 14 under. Dennis
Smith won closest to the hole for men at 18’4’’ on hole #3 and Kali
Porter won it on #17 with 18’10”. The most accurate drive prizes
went to Con Hewitt and Susan Fox. Heartfelt thanks go to all
those who came out and participated; they told me they had fun and
we managed to raise over eighteen thousand dollars for these
worthy charities.
The weather is fantastic so I hope you’re all out there doing your
own mixed golf events and get yourselves geared up for the
competition and the new season in 2012. Look forward to seeing
you out there. - Karen

We appreciate all the support we receive from members, locals, and
hotel guests and want to encourage you all to continue to share any
ideas you may have to improve the tennis here at Silverado.
Recently, we attended the PBI Annual Meeting in Naples, Florida

We received additional training both on and off the court. Many
thanks to Casey Bishop for doing such a great job while we
were gone.
As we head into the winter season we want you all to know that we
will still be offering clinics and having events, so please plan on
getting some tennis in this winter. We do not want your racquets to
get rusty.

TENNIS TIP - Proper Doubles Warm-Up
James Rutherford
So often we see people warming up for their big doubles match hitting high net clearing shots down the line to their opponent trying to
groove their shots in as best as they can before the match… Now read the opening sentence again and see if you can spot some of the errors
in this statement… Found them yet? If not, here’s a little help…
How often in doubles do we or should we be hitting high net clearing balls down the line? If you want to be successful, you should only hit
those shots less then 5% of the time in a match. If you truly want to warm up for doubles and be grooved in for your match, follow these
important steps to ensure that you really are prepared to hit the right shots.
1) Hit cross-court – Over 90% of the shots in doubles of all levels are cross-court. During warm up, make sure you are able to hit this
shot consistently and vary the depths of your cross court shot to be able to handle both an opponent that likes to come to the net or one that
likes to stay on the baseline.
2) Watch your net clearance – Unless you’re hitting a lob it is important to keep your opponent’s rackets below the net to ensure that they
do not have very many opportunities to hit aggressive shots against you. Ensure that you can keep the ball low to the net during the warm
ups so that you feel very relaxed once the match starts. Remember a hard hit ball right to someone’s sweet spot is not as great as a soft low
ball to someone’s shoe laces.
3) Volleys! – Almost 65% of the points are won by the team that gets to the net first, so warm up your volley! Even if you have poor
volleys or are uncomfortable at the net you still need to warm them up before the match in case your opponent is constantly bringing you
up to the net. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst!

GREENS COMMITTEE
Harry Matthews
Jill Alexander, together with help from the Golf Pro Shop, have removed the confusion over the women’s tees i.e. red
on South and gold on North. Going forward the women’s tees will be GOLD on both North and South. This will
add some 70 yards in total length (approximately 4 yards per hole), but should not change the rating or slope.
There will be no plugging of the greens this fall, but aeration will resume in the spring.
For those of us who repair fairway divots and have been unable to find sand dispensers, the Resort has ordered 150
additional bottles which will arrive shortly.
Finally, both courses are in excellent condition and overall maintenance is outstanding. In case you haven't noticed, take a look at our

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH is the Annual Membership Appreciation Day at Silverado Country Club. This weekend
following Thanksgiving which ushers in the Holiday season is a time for both anticipation and reflection on the year nearly past. The
Management Team and all the Associates at Silverado want to take this day as an opportunity to thank you, the members, for the
support you have shown during this time of transition and growth. We believe that we have made significant strides in our ongoing
efforts to achieve a meaningful improvement in your membership experience. In that spirit we invite you to join in the celebration
that is Membership Appreciation Day. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW AND PLAN TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTIVITIES WE HAVE PLANNED!
LOOK FOR YOUR INVITATIONS IN THE MAIL SHORTLY.
GOLF: Foursomes of men and foursomes of women GOLFERS will play a scramble tournament on both courses with a shotgun
start at 9:00 a.m. that morning. There is a $10 CASH entry fee for golfers. Lunch will be provided at the snack bars on the
courses at no charge. Cocktails and snacks will be provided on the FAIRWAY DECK following play. Awards will be presented
at that time.
Format - Blind Man’s Bluff
All golfers will play their own ball and record their GROSS score on the official card. At the end of the round, all participants will
turn their scorecard into the golf professionals.
The Professional Staff will randomly choose three (3) par-3’s, three (3) par-4’s and three (3) par-5’s from the course. We will take the
team’s two best NET scores from these 9 holes to determine your team’s total.
Teams - All players can register for the event in any manner they choose. If you register as a foursome, that will be the group that you
play in, but that will not be your team. Your team will be randomly chosen by the computer based on your handicap. Your “team”
will not be revealed until you complete your round.
If you register as anything other than a foursome, the golf staff will pair your foursome for play.
TENNIS: TENNIS activities for the Net Set will begin at 9:30 a.m. and everyone is to meet at the Members Courts. This is for
