ROUND 11
LEAGUE NEWS with Steven Oliver
The Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football Netball
League completed the first split round of 2010
over the last 2 weekends with some interesting
results. Gisborne travelled to Eaglehawk and really
pushed their more fancied rivals with some great
football over the first ¾ but the Hawks came home
late piling on 6 goals in the last ¼ to record a 33
point win. Strathfieldsaye led Sandhurst at ½ time
at the QEO before the Dragons unleashed one
of the best ¼’s of BFNL football for the season
during the 3rd term scoring 12 goals to put the
game beyond doubt. Storm rallied to outscore
Sandhurst in the final term but the damage was
done. Both games showed the need for clubs to
put 4 quarters together to trouble the top sides,
but that anyone is capable of winning on their day.
The Tigers triumphed in Round 1 by 3 points,
and regardless of ladder positions this will be a
cracking game. 5th placed Maryborough host
4th placed Sandhurst in another great BFNL
game. The winner will gain a games break on their
opponent in the race to the finals, but will also put
themselves in with a chance at the double chance.
Finals hopefuls Kangaroo Flat and Gisborne battle
at Dower Park with the loser almost certainly out of
finals contention. Strathfieldsaye host Eaglehawk
and the Storm have shown over the last few weeks
they have the talent to trouble every side in the
competition but haven’t been able to keep it up
for the entire game. Eaglehawk can’t let this game
slip and will be keen to break the Storm spirit early.
Well done to the BFNL’s VCFL Senior Squad
members Nathan Bell, Grant Week, James Bristow
(Golden Square) and Kain Robins (Eaglehawk).
Rewards for their terrific BFNL form as well as their
contributions to the BFNL Inter League win over
Gippsland in May.
Maryborough were to strong at Castlemaine in the
battle of the Magpies. This win was important as
they opened up a 2 game break over Kangaroo
Flat to hold onto 5th spot. The BFNL’s top 2 sides
destroyed their opponents.
Golden Square ran riot against Kangaroo Flat
with Grant weeks kicking 11 goals. The Bulldogs
recorded a 141 point win. Grant now has kicked
an incredible 88 goals so far in 2010, with the
century looking ominous over the coming weeks.
Keep an eye on the CVGT Rising Star nomination
which have commenced. This is a great award
recognising the League’s young stars and this
season we are fortunate to have some great talent
contesting for the honour of the BFNL’s CVGT
Rising Satr for 2010.
South Bendigo recorded a 199 point win against
the struggling Kyneton Tigers. Celebrating skipper
John Hardinge’s 200th game in style the bloods
were to slick for the Tigers.
The BFNL is moving into new headquarters shortly
with a move to Dudley House.
On Monday night the BFNL hosted the VCFL VLine
life skills “Depression Session”.
Dudley House is directly opposite the main gates
of the QEO and will give the League a much better
opportunity to present ourselves professionally.
QEO House needs much attention even though it
has served the League well over many years, this
shift will see a new era for the BFNL.
With well over 100 people in attendance, Beyond
Blue and Leading Teams presented an insight
into the signs and symptoms of depression. This
session was a great learning experience for all
those who attended and can hopefully benefit
both clubs and individuals who may need to
address this disease.
The BFNL’s History Project is well underway and
the League is looking to hold another induction
of Hall of Fame members, as well as a Team of the
Decade (2000-2009 later in the year. Please keep
an eye on both the footy guide as well as the BFNL
website for more information.
This week sees 1 v 2, Golden Square and South
Bendigo at the QEO. South will be looking to
avenge their round 1 heavy defeat to the Square
and this result will see the winner emerge as
a clear flag favourite in 2010. Kyneton and
Castlemaine clash at Kyneton with the Magpies
desperate to record their 1st win of the season.
ROUND 11
Good Luck to all teams this week.

plus hundreds more over the history of this great Carnival.
An added feature of this year’s V/Line Cup will be a Youth Girls
Country Championship Match between Bendigo and Geelong
being held in conjunction with the V/Line Cup on Tuesday at
Central Reserve Waverly.
It is extremely important that we thank V/Line for their
outstanding support of the Carnival and the opportunity
it provides for players at a crucial stage of their long term
development. We also thank V/Line for their terrific support and
involvement in:
• The V/Line Junior Carnivals
• V/Line Life Training Program
• V/Line Umpire Academies
• V/Line Umpire Leadership Program.
Thanks to Rob Barnett (CEO) and all the team at V/Line for
the great partnership we enjoy throughout regional and rural
communities across the WorkSafe VCFL.
In closing, a big thank you to all the AFL Vic Development
Managers and staff for their professionalism, passion and
commitment to the V/Line Cup.
All the best to all teams over the coming week.
Enjoy your weekend.
Regards,
The 7th V/Line Cup for Under 15 footballers commences on
Monday in Melbourne being again conducted by the WorkSafe
VCFL under the leadership of Shayne Ward, the WorkSafe VCFL’s
Planning, Facilities and Junior Football Manager. Eighteen teams
will participate in (4) Divisions over 3 days and the Carnival will
bring together the best Under 15 footballers from across the
WorkSafe VCFL.
The Carnival (formerly known as the Under 15 schoolboys) has
been going almost sixty years with well over 20,000 young
players being given the opportunity to represent their particular
region of the VCFL. A high percentage of players that have made
it to the AFL and previously the VFL, have come through the V/
Line Cup along with most decorated country players and coaches
also being first noticed at this level.
There will no doubt be a high level of excitement running through
all the players coming to Melbourne for this week’s V/Line Cup as
I’m sure will be the case for all umpires, coaches, support staff,
parents and families – being school holidays presents a great
opportunity for people to make the trip to town.
The 450 young footballers involved in the 2010 V/Line Cup
have been selected from just under 7000 players in the eligible
age bracket – congratulations to all players who have been
selected along with those players who made the original
squads for each team.
The V/Line Cup also provides the opportunity for some 40
young umpires from regional and rural areas to officiate at this
prestigious Carnival with all umpires being selected from the V/
Line Umpiring Academies around the WorkSafe VCFL.
In recent years some of the players that have come through the
V/Line Cup have been:
• Joel Selwood (Bendigo Region – Geelong FC)
• Scott Selwood (Bendigo Region – West Coast FC)
• Ben McEvoy (Ovens & Murray Region – St Kilda FC)
• Steele Sidebottom (Goulburn Murray Region – Collingwood FC)
• Nic Suban (Ballarat Region – Fremantle FC)

Gabriella Greene would play
netball for the Sandhurst FNC. With
her mother, Anne, a member of
Sandhurst’s inaugural netball team
and her father a former player,
coach and current football selector
Gabriella Greene has maroon and blue running through her veins.
Gabby commenced her netball career with St Therese’s Netball Club
in the Strathdale Netball Association playing there until Grade 6. After
a year with Boomerangs, Gabby changed to Southside honing her
skills in the goal shooting department. A highlight of her time with
Southside included winning the 17U Division One grand final in her
second season. Moving to be part of the Dragons’ 17/Under team in
2009, Gabby was fortunate enough to enjoy another premiership.
Gabby’s netball experience to date includes member of Netball
Victoria’s Academy in 2008 and 2009; member of the BFNL 17/U
squad in 2009; and member of Catholic College Bendigo Marist
Netball team, and will be travelling to Queensland to compete
against other schools from around Australia.
Congratulations Gabriella Greene on an excellent netball record to date.

REFLECTIONS
with Richard Jones
THREE SOUTH PREMIERSHIP
TEAMS RETURN TO QEO
And then by quarter-time Golden Square had
grabbed the lead by four points –- 5.0 to 4.2 – and
the stage was set for a gripping struggle over the
next three quarters.
There were some interesting match-ups early on.
Tony Jones was on South’s Mark Keck on one wing,
Robert Bakes started in a back pocket on surprise
Square on-field selection Luke Daffey, while 2010
club president Malcolm Balnaves started at full-back
on Square’s Russell Parkes.
Kendall picked up McEvoy with the Dogs opting for
Kieran Byrne as Bradbury’s tagger. Unfortunately for
the Square from early in the second term Byrne was
forced to sit out the rest of the game with a broken
bone in one forearm.
No matter how far the Bloods stretched the lead the
Square always seemed able to mount a challenge.
South added 5.6 to Square’s 3.5 in the second term.
The Bloods seemed to be in control of the first part
of the quarters, then the Bulldogs surged as the clock
ticked down to the time-on period.
By three quarter-time and even though South
had built up a 33-point lead by adding 4.8 to 1.2,
the Bulldogs weren’t finished. Golden Square kept
fighting back despite the Bloods peppering the
Barnard Street end goals in the final stanza.
Bradbury had told his charges at the lemon-time
break they had to consider the scores level with 30
minutes remaining to be played.
South’s David McMurray grubbered through an
early goal from a goalmouth scrimmage and Square
needed some quick replies.
Daffey worked the ball over to the hard-running
Strauch and he duly goaled.
When Brett Fitzpatrick goaled off the ground and
Weir got another, suddenly the Square looked
threatening. But Hoiles tapped the ball over to Tyack
and the skipper got the ball across to Matt Higgins
who banged home the sealer.

TWENTY years on, South Bendigo’s three premiershipwinning teams from 1990 will celebrate their QEO
successes on Saturday, June 26th.
The Peter Bradbury-coached seniors downed Golden
Square by 22 points in a classic grand final, Brendan
Francis’ reserves accounted for Eaglehawk by 27
points, while in the under-18s the Brian Teasdalementored Bloods beat the Square by 15 points.
South ended a 16-year senior flag drought in the
1990 XXXX BFL grand final with captain Peter Tyack,
the current chairman of selectors, the prime mover
for his club.
Tyack had started to find touch in the Bloods’ Round
17 clash at Canterbury Park against Eaglehawk. He
finished the grand final full of running and won
not only the Sportsmen’s Association Kevin Curran
Memorial Trophy, but also the VCFL medal and the
league sponsor’s XXXX award.
The Bloods’ skipper kicked one of the goals-of-theday from the city end’s Camp Hill school pocket.
Apart from Tyack, South also had great contributors in
free-running half-back Shaun Leech, on-baller David
Griffin and rebounding defender Brian “Puss” Kendall.
For the Square there was none better than eventual
Nalder Medallist Dean Strauch. His strength in the
packs was pivotal to the Bulldogs and he was well
backed up by ruckman Alan Patterson, wingman
Wayne Campbell and centre half-forward Phil McEvoy.
It was a fiery, but not unexpected opening after the
first bounce. Square centre half-back Darren Kulbars
ironed out South key forward Steve Allender. Kulbars’
name immediately went into the book.
From another incident involving the same two
players only moments later, South forward Peter
Hinck came in to remonstrate with Kulbars and found
his name also pencilled into the book.
That wasn’t the end of the onfield fireworks. In
the third quarter Square rover Darren Harris (now
working his way up through the AFL coaching ranks)
was charged by central umpire Alan ‘Boofa’ Smith for
allegedly striking South’s Brian Kendall.
And in the final term, McEvoy charged in and tangled
with South follower Steven Hoiles after Hoiles had
caught Justin Esposito high in an attempted tackle.
The Bloods bounced out to a three-goal lead in the
first nine minutes although by the 22-minute mark
of the opening quarter the Dogs had reduced the
leeway to two points.

IN THE reserves play-off it took South three quarters
to shake off a dogged Eaglehawk. The Bloods held
slender four-point leads at half-time and again at
three-quarter time.
However even though South produced a six-goal
final term to clinch victory, 20 minutes into the last
term the Two Blues were just nine points in arrears.
Eaglehawk started slowly and were goalless at the
first break. It was not until the five minute mark of the
second term that forward Wayne Naughton got his
first of five majors to open Eaglehawk’s goal account.
The Advertiser account of the match on September
24th mentioned that South’s Martin Harrington and
Brad Fawcett were unlucky not to be in the Bloods’
senior line-up.
Harrington and Jarrod Mitchell both booted four
goals for South which had gone through the reserves
home-and-away rounds undefeated.
Final scores: South Bendigo 16.10 (106) def.
Eaglehawk 11.13 (79). South’s best: B. Fawcett, M.
Harrington, Dean Henderson, T. Pianta, C. Harrington,
G. Fitzgerald, D. Pieper.

SOUTH’s under-18s laid the foundation for a historic
day for the club with their 15-point win over Square.
The young Bloods had lost only one game on their
way to the grand final. After Michael Harrington had
scored South’s first major, Travis St Clair booted two
of his three goals for the match in the first term as the
Bloods started well.
Alister Carr scored the goal-of-the-day with a
65-metre torpedo punt at the eight-minute mark of
the last term. Carr’s goal sealed Square’s fate.
Square’s Phil Hetherington (later to play seniors with
South) was sent off for the mandatory 15-minute
spell following a head-high tackle on a South
opponent, last quarter.
Ruckman Tony Plim and defenders Glenn McMahon
and Phil Kennedy were good players for the Bulldogs.
Cowen booted three Square goals.
Final sores: South Bendigo 9.14 (68) def. Golden
Square 8.5 (53). South’s best: D. Symons, K. Brown, M.
Pavleka, S. Anderson, C. Gee, D. Pennington, T. St Clair.

UMPIRES CLUB NOTES
TALL TALK WITH PADDY AND CAZZ FROM THE BUA
Paddy Cazz mate, good to see your back in action for our regular
‘Tall Talk’. I’m sure all Central Victorian Football Supporters
were bitterly disappointed to discover it wasn’t available last
weekend. I know I’m glad that its back and we can continue
with our regular gossip column. What’s been happening in the
life of the great J. Carroll?
Cazz It’s an honour to be back for my weekly chat with you Patrick.
Now with all the rush of the exam period over, I can now take time
to focus on the meaningful parts of my life, like this tall talk column.
So nothing too special has been happening over in my neck of the
woods however I hear its quite the contrary for you, as you did your
100th game last weekend. How did that go?
Paddy It was a privilege to run out for my 100th game with the
BUA. Micky Baker was the lucky recipient of running with me at
Cantebury Oval in Eaglehawk. I was his mentor as he continues his
great development as a junior umpire in the Green Shirt Program.
Now on the topic of green shirt umpires, you may have noticed we
have a large amount of young junior umpires coming through the
ranks as Green Shirt Central Umpires? Have you noticed this Jacob?
They are doing a fantastic job (better than all those referees in the
Socceroos’s games).
Cazz The green shirt program has been booming this year.
Coming through the program myself a few years ago I know just
how beneficial it is for these up and coming umpires. Being able
to umpire a game of football with the confidence of having an
experienced mentor to guide you through the early stages of your
career is very good for their development as an umpire. Not to
mention that wearing green also shows everyone that you’re still
learning and hopefully they will be a bit easier on you (not that
abuse should happen anyway).
Paddy I agree 100%. Most supporters are very good and often
comment on the fantastic job they are doing, but there is still some
abuse they needs to stop. But they will learn. Now, on a lighter note,
did you hear about the wonderful karaoke skills of some of our BUA
members on Saturday night? Brad Rankin and Joel Hilson gave a
wonderful rendition of Achy Breaky Heart, while myself and Peter
Hilson teamed up for Brown Eye Girl. What a fantastic night. My
vocal cords are still recovering mate.
Cazz The ‘New China’ night I hear was a great night for all. I’m very
disappointed I couldn’t attend due to prior engagements. I’m now
aware that some umpires are multi-talented and can actually hold a
tune or two. Word on the street is Hilso is leaving the umpires to take
up a job in professional karaoke. Good Luck to him. Well it’s about
that time where we reach our word limit and unfortunately have
to say goodbye for another week. Good luck to all the umpires this
week and also all the players. Hopefully we come out a little more
liked than the FIFA referees. See you next week mate.
Paddy Yeah we will see you next week mate. Collingwood didn’t
play last weekend so I can give the Melbourne boys a break this
week, but this Saturday night against the Swans....

FUNNIEST MOMENT UMPIRING
When two keen Castlemaine supporters were
scoring on the sidelines and after the game they
came in to the umpires rooms and over ruled the
goal umpire John Hagley (The head Goal coach).
John was proved wrong, but Castlemaine were still
down by over 100 points. I thought that was funny

CLUB NOTES
with two losses, a draw and a win. Not the out come we were
hoping for and plenty of things to work on.
The Joeys started the day off, and it was a terrible start to the game.
The girls were down by a considerable margin at quarter time and
had to dig deep to get back into the game. To their credit they did
this and were right in the game at half time. With the score being
close for the remainder of the game, the girls just fell short in the
end losing by two goals. Well done on a great fight back girls, very
proud of you. Best on went to Maddy Wharton closely followed by
Georgie Hyett and Paige Ipsen.
B Grade got off to a great start against a very tallented Golden
Square side and took it to them for half a game, but dropped off a
little in the third and were unable to get back into the game. These
girls have improved out of site during the season and are on their
way into the top five and finals contention. Keep working hard girls,
as always and the rewards will come. The girls went down to Square
by 18 goals. Best on went to Stacey Tanner, Melitta Carmichael and
Scarlett McCarthy.
A Res, oh A Res, what happened? The girls went out to a great start
and were looking calm and collected and in control of the game and
then after half time Square came back firing and came back at the
girls in a matter of minutes and took the lead. The Roo girls were like
“Roo’s in the headlights” and were stunned and no matter how hard
they tried they struggled to get back in the game in the third quarter.
In the last the Roo girls re grouped and bridged the gap that Square
had made but in the end it came down to a draw. Best on went to
Kattie Sullivan and Alana Conway.
A Grade had a great win over Square and played a controlled and
entertaining match for the full four quarters. One of the best games
the girls have played with brilliant defending, strong drives, amazing
feeds into the ring and accurate goaling. Well done girls, you needed
that one. Roo Girls won by 17 goals. Best - Brooke Emmerson and
Karly Bingham.
This week its Gisborne at home and the Roo girls are out to improve
on our first encounter in the first round of the season where we had
one win, two losses and no B Grade. Good Luck girls.
Thanks to our sponsers, The National Hotel, The Windermeere Hotel,
Bakers Delight Kangaroo Flat and 2E Fitness.
GO ROO GIRLS.
KANGAROO FLAT
Last Saturday night saw the club hold a “Flight night” in the Den. All
those in attendance had a great night.Apparently there was a fair bit
of air turbulance late into the flight, because by all accounts a couple
of committee people sustained knocks to the head. One particular
player who shall remain anonymous but his initials are Tim Brooks
was overhead saying it wouldn’t have done much damage as the
head(of one of the Paul’s)was already empty!
If you haven’t got a ticket or a table for upcoming Club Ball, NOW is
the time to see Brooksy or Don.
Coming Club events:Golf Day at Belvoir Park (date to be confirmed)
3rd July: Annual Ball - Semi formal to formal at the Sports Club
24th July: Trivia Night at the Den
14th August: Roolander and Social review.
2nd October: Presentation night at the Sports Club
Seniors. Last Saturday the boys took on the might of the Golden
Square Bulldogs.Although we were given a bit of a touchup, the guys
certainly held their heads high by continuing to have a crack right
upto the final siren. The doggies are a real class act. Today we take
on Gisborne at Fulton Hogan Oval and we really need to regroup and
get back on the winning list if we are to play final’s footy.
We are getting to the stage where we are now getting back players
from injury which is starting to give us a little more depth.Tigger is
close to getting back on the park and if and when he does, theboys
will have another big option up forward.
Ryan McNish played his best game for the season last week and
the “screamer” he took was absolutely fantastic to see.Carl Thiesz
continued his good form, being among the better players for the
match.Incentive awards went to Nishy,Brent McKenry,Billy White
and Liam Clohesy.
Under18’s. The boys took on Golden Square at Wade Street last
Saturday and again they were undermanned.Young Josh Keogh from
the under 16’s put his hand up and helped out the side.He certainly
impressed and was one of Flat’s better players. One of the pleasing
aspects to come out of the game was the fact that with a few of
the “senior” players from the team being a little down on their usual
form, some of the other guys stepped up and played some real good
football.Keep up the good work and eventually you will be rewarded.
Bobby Johnson took out the Queens Arms award, with Jimmy Purcell
getting the Windermere award, whilst Josh Keogh picked up the KFC
voucher.Ash Pink got the Cutting Xpress award, and Joel Clarke, the
coach’s award.

ROUND 11
The second half continued in the same fashion with the Doggies
piling on the goals eventually running out big winners by nearly
150 points. Anthony Holdstock had his best game for the year and
won the Club Award. Mark Lloyd continued his great form despite
changing the colour of his boots, he picked up the Golden Square
Hotel award. Michael Bateman was great in defence setting up many
attacking forays – he picked up the Foundry Hotel award. Grant
Weeks kicked 11 goals and picked up the National Hotel award.
The reserves started slowly against the winless Flat, only kicking two
goals in the opening half. Once they hit their straps in the second
half it was one way traffic against a side who never gave up trying.
The boys ran away with a decent win but Billo still wants more from
the team and called a Sunday morning session. Best was Mathew
Sporn who won the National Hotel award. Jim Angove picked up
the Golden Square Hotel award, Luke Thompson won the Foundry
Hotel award, Danny Bateman won the Ray & Marg Shea award and
Dale Lowry picked up the Bendigo Finance & Leasing award. Bryce
Curnow also performed well kicking a few goals up forward.
The thirds also started slowly before running into great form and
recording another huge win. Award winners were Brandon Worner
(Golden Square Hotel award), Stevern Jeffrey (Red Rooster award),
Blake Stears (R&R Cook Building), Daniel Carew (Anonymous
club award), Braeden Deary (Foundry Hotel award), Jake McLean
(Country Vet Animal Supplies), Jayden Cordy (National Hotel) and
Charlie Fist (Bendigo Leasing & Finance).

promises to be a great night – see Suze or CJ for tickets.

It was a tough game against Kangaroo Flat for our A Res girls last
weekend with a draw as the result! The girls did a good job and fought
for every goal until the final siren! Best on court went to Suz Eddy in
the mid court, followed by Bree Poustie in defence, Megan Baird who
stepped up and played goals and Dana Jackson in defence.
SOUTH BENDIGO
Welcome to a very special day for the Bloods with the reunion of our
three 1990 premiership sides who triumphed in Seniors, Reserves
and Under 18s in what was a first for the Club. The senior team was
superbly coached by Peter Bradbury and led by inspirational skipper
Peter Tyack who has since coached the Bloods at senior level and is
current Chairman of Selectors.
The Reserves were coached by Brendan Francis, current Club VicePresident and member of the selection committee who led them
to their third consecutive premiership, as did Brian Teasdale with
the Under 18s.
A very big welcome to all past players and officials and we hope
you have a most enjoyable weekend, including today’s game when
the Bloods take on current ladder leaders and our opponents from
the senior Grand Final in 1990, Golden Square. A big thank you to
all concerned in arrangements for the weekend, including President
Mal Balnaves, Brendan Francis and Ken Connaughton for their work
in promoting the event.
One milestone follows another with a great day in Round 10 to
celebrate Club Captain John Hardinge’s 200th senior game. It was
great to see a good crowd on hand to acknowledge this wonderful
achievement by one of the greatest clubmen and players in the
Bloods’ history.
The senior side made sure that the occasion was capped off in style
with a thumping 199 point victory over Kyneton. On a day where
South dominated, Steven Stroobants was a focal point up forward
with eight goals to receive the award from GPO Restaurant and
Bar. Aaron Connaughton was well on top on-ball and collected the
voucher from Budge and the team at the Queens Arms Hotel. Alex
Galea with pace and anticipation at the packs was at the top of his
game with five goals, while Daniel Anderson, with strong tackling

Another big day for the football teams at home against Kangaroo
Flat as the Square were able to poll three big wins.
The seniors started off in great fashion kicking seven goals to two in
the first quarter and 8 to 3 in the second. The defence was holding
up very well, midfielders were winning plenty of the ball and once
again the forwards were capitalizing on all opportunities. Coach
Carter was using plenty of rotations and trying to run the opposition
off their feet.

B Grade. This was a very even game for three quarters with our goalers
shooting well and our defenders working hard. The centre court moved
the ball well at times. However, in the last quarter the girls dropped
concentration, allowing Kyneton to win the contested possessions. The
team worked hard to the end but Kyneton were too strong on the day.
Awards – Alyse Nalder, Abby Jarvis and Kirsty Hamilton.
Thank you to all our weekly award sponsors for football and netball
– Queens Arms Hotel, GPO Restaurant and Bar, JoJoes Restaurant,
Bicknells Independent Sports, Norm Symons and the Gardner and
Craig families- your support is very much appreciated.
As noted above, a big day ahead as we welcome Golden Square to

and netball.
and running was also prominent. Others to feature in the better
players were Pascale Craig, our Rising Star nominee, and Phil Carroll
who has proven to be an important cog in the Bloods’ back six.
The Reserves also had a very comfortable 90 point win with Justin
Tuohey in just his second game proving that he is a fine mid-season
acquisition for the Bloods. Justin will enjoy the hospitality of JoJoes
Restaurant. Rohan Bowles continued his very consistent season form
to collect the award from David Bicknell at Bicknells Independent
Sports and Rory Alexander showed that he is returning to top form
to receive the voucher from, the Queens Arms Hotel. The Reserves
were also well served by Tom Dargaville, Kris Berchtold with three
goals, and Michael Tonkin.
In arguably their best performance for the year, the Under 18s had
a great 102 point win. Scoring consistently across four quarters,
the young Bloods were always in control in a great display of team
football. The young Bloods had dual targets in attack with David
Blume dominating at centre half forward, kicking accurately with
six goals, while Clay Anstee, at spearhead, marked strongly and
kicked truly with five majors. David and Clay received the Jo Joes and
Queens Arms awards respectively. Billy Nalder was dynamic on-ball
and collected the voucher from Bicknells Independent Sports. Cash
awards went to Tristan Fitzallen and Dan Murphy who were both
resilient in defence, while Aaron Leggett celebrated his birthday
with a late goal and was among the young Bloods’ better players.
The young Bloods also welcomed Ben Butler to the ranks and he
showed on debut that he will be a fine addition to the side.

Netball
There were only two games played last round.
A Reserve. This was a good win for the Bloods with everyone playing
as a team. The goalers had their shooting eye in and converted very
well. The centre players worked hard and created many turnovers
and the defenders worked hard all game. Well played to all. Awards
– Mel Rowlands, Tegan Elliston and Tamara Morcombe.
ROUND 11
EAGLEHAWK
Welcome back once again. We had a break last week with the split
round, we played in the first week. We took on Gisborne at home and
I am pleased to say that all our football teams did well. Looking at
ground and seeing everything that has happened to it over the past
few weeks has turned out with little remaining signs on it. Thanks to
the City of Greater Bendigo for getting the job done on time.
Today we have taken a trip across the bridge to Strathfieldsaye. Here’s
hoping all teams come home with good results to write about.
Back to the game against Gisborne on the 12th June. The start of
the second half of the season saw the under 18’s just hold on by 2
points to turn the tables on Gisborne after our round 2 defeat. The
windy conditions saw only 4 goals being scored at the town end
of the ground and apart from the third quarter when they kicked
5.4 the boys never really got going. Award winners were Logan
Popple (Crapper’s Plumbing Service Award), Ben Fraser (John Cross
Plumbing Service Award), Dylan Sullivan, Keenan Gallagher (Club
Awards), Tom Harrington (Gary Wilkinson Award), Aaron Bateson
(Paul West Award). Thanks to all the award donors.
Our reserves won by 56 points. B Conley had a good day kicking
5 goals while J Hill and D Crapper both kicked 2 goals each. Other
goals kickers were J Reilly, A Bowe, D Reid and I Ferguson. Best on
the ground for the reserves were D Reid, A Bowe, D Reid, R Dudley, D
Smith and B Conley. Well done to Reidy’s Reserves.
The seniors had us all on the edge of our seats throughout the game.
They managed to get the final few goals in the last minutes of the
game to get up and win by 33 points. For those watching it was
an exciting end to the day. Goals kickers for the Borough were M
Gretgrix 6, Derrick Filo kicking 4, T Coates and J Findlay both booting
2 through. L Jacobs, J Bowe, T Nicolson, B Herdman and K Robins
were all effective in adding to the goal total. Best on for the day were
T Coates, J Findlay, G Crawford, M Gretgrix, T Nicolson and L Button.
Special thanks must go out to all of the awards donors each week.
On behalf of the players and club - it is appreciated.
After the game against Gisborne on the 12th June the boys got
together and had a soccer night for the World Cup.

17 & Under. It was another great day for improvements as the girls
held strong with goaling, sound mid court with the scores being
level at the half way mark at 19 all. The third quarter was were we
let our selves down with the score being 25 to 30. However the girls
held strong in the last quarter going goal for goal. The final score
being 34 to 39. Awards: Maddy - Meat Matters Award, Bec - Damien

B Grade. Got off to a great start with the team working hard all over
the court and capatilising on turn overs to be 18 to 1 at quarter time.
The girls continued there hard work on the court the goalers shot
well the defenders worked hard and the mid court drove well and
created space. It was a great team effort well done girls. Abella Hair
Award: Amelia, Subway and pizza Bae
A Reserve. The A reserve game started with accurate shooting by
both teams in the 1st quarter. We took a 5 goal lead into the 2nd
quarter, however Gisborne were able to capitalise on our mistakes
and get back within 2 goals half way through the quarter. However
we adapted well to a few positional changes made at half time, and
increased our defensive pressure which created more intercepts. Our
drives and feeding in attack improved and we were able to increase
our lead to 12 by the end of the 3rd quarter. This allowed us to make
more changes to try different combinations which didn’t rattle the
team. Gisborne kept fighting to the end, however we were eventual
winners 44-34. Lets Get Saucy and Tatts awarded to Jess for a great
game in goals, Subway and John Cross Plumbing award to Hannah
for her tough defensive work.
A Grade. Both teams got off to an even start. We worked the ball
around well and defenders had great pressure at end of the quarter
it was 10 all. The rest of the game gisborne took control and we were
playing catch up netball. We had some great passages of play and
glimpses of hope but just couldnt get back in the game. Zamboo

MARYBOROUGH
A weekend free and then we travelled to Castlemaine to play for the
Stephen Brown Trophy.
This trophy is played for by our two Clubs, in memory of a respected
teacher and friend who had ties to both Clubs, and the trophy was again
won by our Club where it has pride of place in our new trophy cabinet.
Seniors. The Seniors had a number of players unavailable through
injury, illness and work commitments and this gave a few reserves
their chance to step up to the firsts. Matthew Brown and Cam Rinaldi

ROUND 11
CLUB NOTES
At half time our girls had a comfortable lead of 17 goals and were
determined to stretch their lead. In a stand-out third quarter, Genna
Fitzgibbon intercepted excellently in defence and centre player Zoey
Kerr continued to feed the goalies well around the ring. In the final
term, O’Shea shot fantastically to boost ‘Borough’s lead and was
heavily assisted by Zoey Kerr who created lots of space to make good
options for the goalies. Final scores were 60-30, the girls continuing
to have a successful season.
B Grade didn’t have such a great day however, are improving
immensely each week and narrowing the gap between their
opposition. In the first quarter Karlie Rinaldi played great defence
and deflected many balls which Melissa Adams did well to chase up
and move the ball down the court. In the second term Jenna Gowers
positioned herself well in the ring and shot accurately. Lauren
Mitchell also had a good quarter in defence, keeping her player out
of the ring limiting her scoring opportunities. After half time Shaela
Kennedy fired up in goals, rebounding most loose balls and shooting
well. Karlie Rinaldi continued to play great defence and take many
intercepts to convert the ball back ‘Borough’s way. In the final term
Jenna Gowers showed great determination and movement while
Melissa Adams had a good quarter in defence putting pressure over
the ball and encouraging her team well. Scores were Maryborough
31 to Castlemaine’s 48.
A Reserve played a fantastic game which was fast-paced and a great
team effort. Wings Sarah Pitts and Sarah Lovel started well applying
good pressure over the ball in defence and leading out well for the
centre passes. Caitlyn Egan also had a strong first quarter shooting
very accurately. In the second quarter, Rachel Palmer played
excellent tight defence limiting her players opportunities to score
and goalies Caitlyn and Katie Allan continued to shot nicely and
move well together. At half time the ‘Borough girls had a healthy
lead of 11 goals but knew they would have to continue to work
hard to maintain and extend their lead. In the third term defender
Stacey Bowen read the play well, getting her hands on many of
Castlemaine’s stray passes into the ring and centre player Shenai Dix
worked hard all over the court, feeding ‘Borough’s goalies well. In
the final term, both shooters who had shot well all day continued to
do so and attackers Sarah Pitts and Shenai Dix drove well around the
court to move the ball out of the centre and into the ring. At the final
siren Maryborough won a much deserved win 53-45.
A Grade was the final team to have a successful day making a few
different changes throughout the game which showed the girls
versatility. In the first quarter shooter Jordan Macilwain stared
strongly holding her position well under the ring and shooting
accurately. Cindy Graco also had a good first quarter controlling the
ball well throughout the mid-court and passing nicely into the ring.
In the second term, Julia Coates played excellent tight defence on
her opponent and defended the ball well to try stop Maine’s passes
from entering their ring. Alisha Chadwick was excellent in defence,
rebounding well by blocking her player out and intercepting many
balls. After half time, ‘Borough’s defence dominated the third
courter, Alisha and Laura Clarkson applying great pressure over
Maine’s goalies therefore limiting their opportunities. In the final
term Cindy Graco, who had been moved into goals shot accurately
were the targets in front of goals, while Joel Malone, Cole Roscheller,
Matthew Johnston and Glen Chadwick all led the push forward, and
Chaddy again controlled the ‘Maines goal-kicking space.
At the end of the game the side were delighted to accept that
Stephen Brown cup to bring back home.
Reserves. The Reserves had quite a few players unavailable, eg.
Shaun Hooper being called to work as he ran on to the ground to
warm up at the start of the game, and a couple of the Under 18’s
again stepped up to fill the gaps.
The team played well with Marc Cassidy and Eathan Jennings
leading the push for goals, while Jake Bucknall, Adam Hurse, Murray
Bond, Sam McDowell and Josh Cornwill all played great games.
It was good to Glen McMillan, Anders Malone and the Coach all
filing spots on the ground.
Under 18’s. Again the boys received a real thumping, as they could
not win control of the ball.
Anders Malone was a real battler as he worked to try to stem ‘Maine
onslaught.
Glen McMillan, Nick Harnetty, Daniel Vadala, James Lohmann and
Ryan O’Shea all tried, but fellas, it is a team effort and cannot be left
to just a few, if you want to win.
Today the Club is welcoming back to our great Princes Park the
members of the 1960’s Premiership Teams, Seniors & Reserves,
among them our Clubs No. 1 Ticket Holder the great former Carlton
player Mr. John Nichols. John will be joined by many of his former
contemporaries, so to all our teams we need you to put on a good
performance. We are at home to Sandhurst and all our teams will
need to play well if we are to add another 4 points to our ladder
positions, and can we? Well yes of course we can, and we will.

Netball
At the halfway mark through the 2010 season, the Maryborough
Netball Club had a good day out last Saturday against Castlemaine.
The under 17’s were first to start the day making their game look
easy. In the first term, mid-courters Zoey Kerr and Emma Allan
worked hard down the court applying great defensive pressure
which in turn gave the Maine girls little opportunities. Also starting
well, goalie Olivia O’Shea pulled in lots of rebounds allowing
Maryborough to capitalize. In the second quarter, defender Kahlia
Dix provided lots of drive out of defence and teamed up well in the
mid -court with Olivia to bring the ball down through the centre.

and encouraged the team well and wing player Anna Bucknall
fought out the game leading well at centre passes and throwing
strongly into the goalies. Final scores were 54-34.

Tom Hartney, Bryce Scott.
The Reserves led at every break to continue their unbeaten run with
a convincing 63 point win over fifth placed Strath Storm. Callum
Prest, Braidy Dickens and Corey Lobb continue to push for senior
selection and here’s hoping they get a look in very soon. It says great
things about the depth at Sandhurst at present given the talent we
have kicking the dew off the grass.
Sandhurst 12.17.89 def Strath Storm 4.2.26 Best players McKinley, C
Prest, Dickens, Connor, Lobb, T Stagg.
In the Thirds, Sandhurst got the 4 points in what was a hard fought
game against a quality opposition. The highlight of the game was
the constant pressure from both sides but in the end Sandhurst’s
class was able to allow them to draw away and record a 57 point
win. It was great to see Koe Ngawati play his first game for the year
after the Pioneers had a week off and his run of half back gave us a
lot of drive. The injury list continues to grow with Xavier Meade and
Tom Credlin out before the game and Jaran McKay and Tom Whiting
injured during the game. We hope to see some of our injured players
come back after the break because numbers are at bare minimum.
We have the week off next week to freshen up and we go into the
second half of the season hoping to cement our spot at the top end
of the ladder.
Sandhurst 14.8.92 def Strath Storm 4.11.35 Best players Hartney,
Prime, Storer, Ngawati, Downie, Healy.
Netball:
A Grade: Sandhurst 52 def Strath Storm 32
A Res: Sandhurst 53 def Strath Storm 21
B Grade: The weather was perfect and the Hurst girls were pumped
for another great game. Never underestimating Strath they came out
strong, the first quarter being a ripper Hurst 14-7. Strath pulled in
the reigns and slowed Hurst down in the 2nd but it wasn’t enough
to put our defensive game off great rebounding from Jo. The 3rd
was much the same with some well timed intercepts from Julia and
Ash. Hurst mid court and Goalers were too strong in the 4th. Player
awards went to Ashlee, Jordan & Erica. The final score Sandhurst 46
defeated Storm 28.
Under 17 A comanding display of versatility and teamwork resulted
in a comfortable 40 point victory over Stathfieldsaye on Saturday.
The Sandhurst young guns were sharp and skilful in attack, which
made it difficult for Storm to shut down our accurate goalers.
Stephanie Strachan had several opponents throughout the game,
but demonstrated her oustanding fitness by dominating the mid
court. Our defenders limited Srathfieldsaye’s scoring opportunities
and did not allow their opponents to score more than 6 goals in
any 1/4 of play. Sandhurst 62 defeated Strath Storm 22. Award

Football
Sandhurst consolidated its position in the top five on Saturday with a
53-point victory over Strathfieldsaye at the QEO. The Dragons kicked
more than half their score in a stunning third-quarter blitz when
they piled on 12.5 at the city end in a scintillating 31 minutes of
football that blew the contest wide open. Prior to that, it was gameon at half-time as the Storm led by seven points. The Dragons’ third
quarter domination started just 25 seconds into the term when
Jarrod Bateson goaled on the run from 50m after capitalising on
a Storm turnover across half-back. Within 1:40 of game time, Tom
Summerhayes and Nick Stagg had also goaled for Sandhurst to
quickly turn what had been a seven-point half-time deficit into an
11-point lead. And there was no let-up from the slick Dragons for
the rest of the quarter as they ran the Storm off its feet. The Dragons
went inside their forward 50m arc 21 times in the third term for a
return of 12.5, leaving the Storm shellshocked after its competitive
start. Sandhurst’s goals in the third quarter onslaught were kicked
by Bateston (two), Summerhayes (two), Stagg (two), Sam McGee
(two), Ben Deuscher (two), Bryce Scott and Jon Coghlan. With
Simon Weekley moved in to the ruck and onballers Deuscher,
Holmes, Stagg, Bateston and Jon Coghlan dominating, the Dragons
won the centre clearances 12-3 in the third quarter. From a contest
that was in the balance at half-time, by three quarter-time it was
game over as the Dragons led by 56 points. “It has been a while
since we kicked 12 goals in a quarter,” Dragons coach Keiran Nihill
said. “I didn’t think we had been going as hard at it as we possibly
could in that first half, but the boys responded well in the third
quarter and we started winning the ball a bit through the middle,
which is where we had been getting smashed early.” The Dragons’
best players were led by star midfielder Deuscher, whose strong
overhead contested marking was again a highlight. Bateson, who is
back in the side after a stint in the reserves, played with confidence
and provided his trademark run and carry as he finished with three
goals. Midfielders Holmes and Stagg, who stood up in the absence

the other wing. It proved to be the winning move with us scoring
11 goals to Souths 7 in the 3rd quarter. The last term was a cracker
with us silencing South. Commish held well in the ring & popped up
11 of our 15 goals for the quarter. It was a great team effort in the
last by everyone to hold it together for a 10 point with over South.
Final scores Kyneton 41 to Souths 31. You deserved that win girls.
The Walkers Transport Award went to Tegan Beckerley, the Capones
Award went to Hayley Redpath & the Subway Award went to Nicole
Scarano.
This game was a must win for our A Reserve, but they suffered a
major blow with 3 away. Tay moved well both in & out the circle &
backed that up by shooting well. Our defence was tight & didn’t let
South get any easy goals, leading 11-9 at the first break. The 2nd
quarter was one to forget with us scoring 3 to Souths 15. Tego filled
in the first half & still after 4 quarters of B Grade she continued to
amaze us with her athletic ability. She was queen of the intercepts.
Riles worked hard in the centre with some nice passing into the
goalers. We picked our heads up in the 3rd quarter, but again had
a slump in the last. V did well to keep running in WD but she had
a hard task all day. In the end it was disappointing for the girls to
go down 32-45. The Connallys Real Estate Award went to Tayla
Durham, the Capones Award went to Kristy Viete, the Subway Award
went to Tegan Beckerley & the Kyneton Dry Cleaners Award went to
Steph Penning.

KYNETON
South Bendigo was just too good for us last Saturday. The boys
were just out gunned by a very accomplished team with eyes on
challenging Golden Square.
Better players were Will, big Beau, Rhys, Robbie, Doc and Funkie. We
should have Jimmy and Sciba back today to take on the challenge
from Castlemaine.
The Reserves have suffered with players up in the seniors and players
unavailable. Hopefully we will have a stronger team to take it up to
the ‘maine’ today. Last week the boys fought it right out with a much
improved second half against the Bloods. It was goods to see Jay get
a few kicks in his efforts to return to the senior team. Other players
trying their best were Fish, Darcy, Matty Ric, Chuck and Trev Brennan
in a rare appearance due to work commitments.
The Under 18’s continue their hot and cold season. After winning
at Maryborough, and giving South a fright in the earlier game this
season, we really felt the boys could at least be competitive. The few
players who did put in included Mick Bentley, little Stevie, Zac, Mitch
Hiller, Jopo and Breno.
The Under 15 A and B team’s both travelled to Bendigo and the A
team were no match for a strong Golden Square side and the B team
met their match in South Bendigo at Weeroona Oval. Both teams are
playing at the Showgrounds tomorrow, so come down and give the
boys some encouragement and support. Go Tigers.

Not an awesome start for us with 6 out for the day. So desperate
times call for desperate measures! In step the coach & my good self
to fill the gaps. The coach obviously hasn’t played in lycra before.
That was evident when she was about to step on the court & she
had her dress fully on….backwards!! It was the funniest thing that
we will see all season. Bought tears to my eyes! Both B Grade teams
started well & were very competitive from the start. With myself
in the WA position & realizing that my little legs weren’t going as
fast as my brain wanted them to, I did pull off the best defensive
intercept of the quarter, only to have the coach fluff the pass in the
ring! Tego was her brilliant best in defence & stepping up in the mid
court. Half time saw us down by 1, but still smelt blood. Farmer
moved into goals with Commish, Benno on the wing & Scrano on

is truly your old fashioned footballer. With gadget arms and a never
say die attitude it was a very creditable debut. He also took home
the 1% Award. Without exception I hope every player has a look at
themselves and hits the track with a view to making sure we come
away with a win against Eaglehawk in two weeks time.
STRATHFIELDSAYE
Expectations were high that the three football teams would
acquit themselves well against Sandhurst. Given the QEO 2 weeks
earlier was a quagmire we were suitably impressed with the
transformation. Congrats to the curator!
With the coaching staff completely stunned by the efforts of the
third quarter, Clint begged for a better final term. Lachy Sharp
responded with a further 2 goals and we managed to outscore
Sandhurst by 3 points but the horse had bolted. T Mac tried hard
all day spilling some claret along the way. He was also supported by
Ricey with a new role up forward.
Glen was quite disappointed with the effort from the Under 18’s and
kept them locked away for quite a while spelling out some home
truths. I’m sure every player gave his best for the game but it really
was a one sided game. Sandhurst established an early lead and built
on it from there. The second term was the best for the Storm boys as
they added 2 goals 5, to Sandhurst 3 straight goals. With the extra
week off this week it is a great opportunity for the boys to get to
training, work hard, and ensure a much better result comes our way
against Eaglehawk. Better players for the day were Leigh O’Sullivan,
Leighton Driscoll, Daniel Hamilton and Jake Robertson. Goal kicking
was limited to four players.
We are looking forward to close to a full strength side next game
with Cam Ross, Smokey and possibly Smiley to come back into the
team. I for one know we are capable of giving the ‘Borough a run for
their money on our home turf, so let’s get to it. With 3 home games
in a row we have the chance to redeem our slim chances of a top 5
position in 2010.
Don’t forget our Goods & Services Auction on the 4th of July and
the ball on the 24th of July. Make sure you get along and provide
your support and assistance to make these successful functions for
the Club. Make sure you get along to the Rubiks Cube Party on
Saturday 26th June, at the clubrooms, $5.00 entry for a 7.30pm
start. Come dressed in whatever you can find: layer and accessorise
in any and every colour. WARNING: You won’t be going home in
the same outfit!!!
Our Reserves didn’t fare any better than the Under 18’s as they
were just as comprehensively beaten by a more determined side.
Jarrod Prentice and Nic Cook played their hearts out and received
credit from the coach for their efforts but most of the team failed
to contribute. With two sub standard efforts in a row now, the bar
has to be raised. Come on guys; let’s make a concerted effort to
stamp our authority on the competition. While Sandhurst played
the better football on the day the scoreboard didn’t reflect the
competitiveness of the match. Other contributors on the day were
the Vigus boys, Brucey and Douth. As with the Under 18’s goal
kicking was four singles.
Go Storm!!
CASTLEMAINE
In complete contrast to the first two games the Seniors came out
and got off to a fabulous start with Lachy Sharp again having a
major impact with three first quarter goals. He was inspirational, as
well as accurate, and this sent Storm to the first break with a nine
point advantage. The second quarter developed into a real arm
wrestle as neither side could establish dominance. Jono Gawthrop
was giving it everything chasing and tackling in an effort to gain
the vital break. With Brenton Hall constantly repelling the Sandhurst
attacks things looked bright. At the long break the margin had been
cut to seven points. Sandhurst to some extent kept the Storm in the
game with inaccurate kicking for goal. Given the effort of the first
half, all Storm supporters were buoyant, and expected a hell of a
tussle for the second half. The mood in the rooms for Storm was a
little flat, but didn’t give any indication of what was to come.
Last Saturday Castlemaine hosted the Maryborough Magpies at
the Camp and once again the Senior side was competitive for
most of the game, but once again failed to get the chocolates.
Better players were Lachlan Ford, Luke Walters, Jeff McMurtrie
and Rhys Jenkins.
In the 2s Castlemaine had a slow start and were never able to make
up the quarter time deficit. Best players were Dale Hansford, Brett
Cole, Trev Butcher and Jackson Hood.
The under 18s had a great win by 150 points. Nathan Plumridge
slotted 7 goals and Zac Plant and Ed Coulthard showed the benefits
of their Senior experience with great games.
On Sunday the under 16.5s had a good win against Maryborough
with Anthony Robins, Barney Ogier, Jake Elliott and Alex Farrow
leading the way while the Superules boys travelled down to Colac
and held on for a good win after a late goal from Johnny Hunter.
Better players were Mick Grant, Pete Kennedy, Nev Cooper and
Dean Schmidt.
The third quarter saw Sandhurst bang on twelve, yes 12 goals to
Storms 2. It took less than 20 seconds for ‘Hurst to add their first,
and they managed 2 more in the next 40 seconds. From there you’d
have sworn there was only one team on the park. And who knows
what it could have been without a super performances from the ever
reliable Brenton Hall and senior debutant Andrew Mangan. Mango

ROUND 11
CHAMPIONS!
The 17/U team consisted of Amy Jackman (Eaglehawk), Chloe Watson,
Stephanie Strachan, Abbey Gilmore (Sandhurst), Olivia O’Shea, Kahlia
Dix (Maryborough), Jacqueline Dupuy (Golden Square), Grace Hamilton
(South Bendigo) and Annabel Stewart (Gisborne).
Annabel Stewart was a late inclusion for Shelby Thatcher (illness).
The future of Bendigo FNL participating at the Association
Championships remains bright with a number of the current team still
eligible next year.
OPEN
The BFNL Open team had a good day out at the Association
Championships finishing third in its division only losing one match for
the entire day.
Late withdrawals from Brianna Dalrymple-Monro and Jessica Geary
(both injured on Saturday) left Bendigo with seven players. Anna
Bucknall (Maryborough) responded to the call for an emergency player
and was an integral member of the team.
We played Boroondara NA (15-9), Ovens & Murray FNL (draw), North
Gippsland FNL (15-8), Colac District FLNA (13-8), Yarra Valley Mountain
FNL (7-15) and Hampden FNL (14-7).
The draw to Ovens & Murray was costly in our placing on the ladder.
Bendigo was up six goals at half time but changes to the O&M line up
with a new goal shooter and defender taking to the court changed the
intensity of the game with O&M fighting back to level the score just
before the siren.
A highlight of the day’s play was the goal circle combination of Christie
Carmody and Claire Gibbs. The lightning fast passes between them and
their accuracy in goals was a feature of the team’s performance.
At the end of the day Yarra Valley won the grand final against Ovens
& Murray. The Yarra Valley team consisted of many Boroondara Division
One players from the Victorian Netball League. Coach Melissa Ryan
conceded that “to only just go down to such a team was an awesome
result for BFNL”.
The Bendigo Open team consisted of Alisha McGlashen, Lauren Cowling
(Kangaroo Flat), Louise Dupuy (Golden Square), Laura Clarkson, Anna
Bucknall (Maryborough), Meagan Atkins, Claire Gibbs (Sandhurst),
Christie Carmody (Eaglehawk).
Ryan was impressed with her team’s overall performance throughout
the day, “I compliment all our players for the way they represented our
League, they played with great sportsmanship and showed the utmost
respect for all the teams they played.
Finally, a special mention should be made of our Open umpire, Danielle
Wilson, who was awarded a semi final match. This is a huge compliment
to Danielle and we congratulate her on a fine umpiring performance.
Back row: Tracey Strachan (team manager), Kahlia Dix,
Amy Jackman, Chloe Watson, Jacqueline Dupuy, Olivia O’Shea
and Debbie Symes (coach)
Front row: Grace Hamilton, Abbey Gilmore, Stephanie Strachan
and Annabel Stewart.
17/UNDER
The Bendigo Football Netball League 17/Under representative team was
crowned state champions on Sunday, 20 June at the Wm LOUD (Aust)
Pty Ltd Association Championships. The Championships, held at the
State Hockey Netball Centre in Parkville, brought together the top teams
from each zone within Victoria.
After sweeping through the Golden City, Echuca, BFNL and Northern
Zone tournaments, Bendigo’s 17/Under team captured its first win at
the Association Championships.
Our 17/U team played Goulburn Valley FNL (16-6), Waverley & District NA
(18-3), Alberton NA (5-9), Ballarat NA (9-6) and Diamond Creek Force
NA (13-7) in the preliminary rounds. After two convincing wins, Bendigo
dropped its only match for the day against Alberton, a team that consisted
of mainly top age players. Venturing outside for the first time that day,
Bendigo battled the rain as well as Ballarat for a close win. Finishing with
four wins from five matches, Bendigo finished second in its division.
A semi final showdown against Ovens & Murray FNL had Bendigo
leading 9-5 at half time. Consistency was the key to Bendigo’s
performance winning convincingly 17-8.
It was a daunting prospect playing Geelong FLN in the grand final
having watched them earlier in the day. The Geelong players looked to
be strong all over but especially in the mid court. Holding a three goal
lead at the half time break (8-5), Bendigo continued its winning streak
with a 15-9 victory.
Coach Debbie Symes was in awe of her team’s performance in the grand
final. Though it was a terrific team performance special mention is made
of Amy Jackman who suffered an ankle injury in the final match of the
preliminary rounds. After receiving treatment at the first aid centre she
was able to perform admirably in the two finals. Jacqueline Dupuy and
Abbey Gilmore’s goal shooting was a highlight of the day. Jacqui held
strongly in the goal circle receiving pinpoint accurate passes from Abbey
Gilmore, both of whom shot goals at a high percentage. Also, Grace
Hamilton, our youngest member at only 14 years of age held her own
against much older and more experienced opposition.
