Kindergarten French Immersion at the GECDSB
The Greater Essex County District School Board is proud to offer parents and
students the opportunity to enrol in an Early French Immersion Program. French
Immersion is designed for students whose first language is not French. The goals of
the program are to enable students to become functionally bilingual, to instill an
appreciation of language and culture among students, and to promote lifelong
language learning.
Students can begin the Early French Immersion Program in Junior Kindergarten,
Senior Kindergarten , or the first few weeks of Grade 1 (see Board Procedure for
details). The program continues into high school where students achieve diploma
requirements in French Immersion.
What is the parent’s role in French immersion?
Frequently Asked Questions
Do students in French Immersion learn the same curriculum as students in
an English program?
French Immersion students learn the same curriculum as that of students enrolled in an
English program. Only the language of instruction is different. As students in French
Immersion progress through the primary years, English is gradually introduced into their
program. Students’ literacy skills develop along with their growing acquisition of the
French language.
Must the parents be French speaking?
Read and communicate with your child in their first language. Research shows that
knowledge learned in a first language is transferred to a second language.
No. The French Immersion Program is a French
as a Second Language program. No previous
French background is necessary.
As well, have a positive attitude towards learning French as a second language.
