How do I enrol my child in French Immersion? Registration may be completed with the school secretary. Please call for an appointment to register or to visit the school. Kindergarten French Immersion at the GECDSB The Greater Essex County District School Board is proud to offer parents and students the opportunity to enrol in an Early French Immersion Program. French Immersion is designed for students whose first language is not French. The goals of the program are to enable students to become functionally bilingual, to instill an appreciation of language and culture among students, and to promote lifelong language learning. Students can begin the Early French Immersion Program in Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten , or the first few weeks of Grade 1 (see Board Procedure for details). The program continues into high school where students achieve diploma requirements in French Immersion. What is the parent’s role in French immersion? Frequently Asked Questions Do students in French Immersion learn the same curriculum as students in an English program? French Immersion students learn the same curriculum as that of students enrolled in an English program. Only the language of instruction is different. As students in French Immersion progress through the primary years, English is gradually introduced into their program. Students’ literacy skills develop along with their growing acquisition of the French language. Must the parents be French speaking? Read and communicate with your child in their first language. Research shows that knowledge learned in a first language is transferred to a second language. No. The French Immersion Program is a French as a Second Language program. No previous French background is necessary. As well, have a positive attitude towards learning French as a second language. Your encouragement and commitment will contribute to your child’s success.
