Thought to ponder …….
A Child's Prayer for Grandparents
Dear God, please bless my grandparents.
Thank you for the life they gave my parents
and for the life they give to me.
Let them be healed of every sickness and pain.
And let them see with their own eyes
the glory of your Son, Jesus,
in the love of their children and grandchildren.

For the ways they helped me and made me strong,
I give thanks.
For the ways they love me no matter what, I rejoice.
For the ways they have paved the road
that leads me here, I am grateful.
Let them grow in wisdom and joy in life.
Let them find peace and rest from their work.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome back to term 4! I still find it hard to
believe we are starting the final term of 2014 and
out of all the terms this one seems to speed along
the quickest.
The final term of the year means that we are
preparing to farewell our senior class GTK. On
speaking with several of the students yesterday
there is a range of emotions from sadness to
excitement to trepidation at what lies ahead in
2015. I’d like to wish GTK the very best as they
start their final term and pray that this will be a
wonderful time spent with their friends and
teachers.
I’d also like to reflect back to the end of last term
which finished with the junior sports carnival. This
was such a great day with lots of fun, good
competition and great sportsmanship. Thank you
to our preps to year 2’s for the way they
conducted themselves during the carnival and the
fantastic encouragement they gave to each other.
Thank you also to Mr Sutherland who did a
fantastic job in organising such a fun event.
Where else but Bethania Lutheran School would
you see a gumboot throwing competition and a
chase the monkey obstacle course and yes there
was a monkey. It was also wonderful to have the
kindy boys and girls come over to join in. We love
having them along as part of our community.
Once again our senior Captains did a great job in
assisting Mr Sutherland and working with all the
children. It makes me very proud to see our
youngest and oldest students creating such a
friendly atmosphere together. To complete the
day all the children were provided with a sausage
sizzle and drink. Thank you to the P and F for
organising the food, coffee van and delicious
treats for all the parents and friends. It was very
much appreciated!
This week ends with Grandparents and Special
Friends Day which is another highlight on the
school’s calendar. The children love being able to
show their grandparents or special friend around
their school and I hope that all who visit us will
leave with some special memories.

The Strong Willed Child
Every child brings with them their own unique joys and challenges. It can often be frustrating to try
strategies for relating to your child that you have seen work with others but just don’t work for yours. It is
not all that unusual to find that even in the same family, tried and true methods might have little to no
effect on one child but work wonders with another. This term we are going to have a look at various
personality types and give you a few tips that might work for these uniquely
individual children.
To start off the term we are going to talk about possibly one of the most challenging
personality types - the strong willed child. While these children can be a challenge
when they are young, strong willed children often grow to be very self-motivated,
inner directed young people who seem almost impervious to peer pressure.
Sensitively parented, these children can grow to be the leaders of the next
generation. A strong willed child is often described as ‘stubborn’ or ‘difficult’ but the
truth is, they are just the kind of people who want to learn things for themselves
rather than just accepting what others accept. It is precisely this quality that
enables them to grow to be people of integrity, not easily swayed by popular
opinion. Strong-willed kids have big, passionate feelings and live at full throttle.
The most dangerous temptation of parents of these children is to “break their will” as they are constantly
testing the limits over and over. It is important to note that it takes two to have a power struggle. You
don't have to attend every argument to which you're invited! Parents who pay attention can avoid power
struggles, even with strong-willed kids, by empathizing as they set limits, giving choices, and
understanding that respect goes both ways.
Looking for win/win solutions and understanding their perspective, rather than just laying down the law,
keeps strong-willed children from becoming explosive and teaches them essential skills of negotiation
and compromise. You want to raise a child who has self-discipline, takes responsibility, and is
considerate -- and most important, has the discernment to figure out who to trust and when to be
influenced by someone else. That discernment only comes when kids are taught to think for themselves,
rather than simply obeying authority. Remember that strong-willed kids are experiential learners. That
means they have to see for themselves that the swing is too high. So unless you're worried about
serious injury, it's more effective to let them learn through experience, instead of trying to control them.

Swimming lessons 2014
In the Sport Light
This term we will be starting our swimming lessons for Years 2 to
7. The lessons begin next week on Friday the 17th of October and
run for five weeks. Our school bus will transport the students to
and from their swimming lessons held at the Beenleigh Pool.
Parents are welcome to attend and observe the compulsory
lessons. Students will be getting changed before and after their
lessons at school only. Students will wear on the bus their
swimmers, cap, goggles, towel and thongs or crocs. This is to
preserve time at the pool so the students will get their full 30
minutes of lesson as soon as they arrive. Please see the uniform
shop for information on the compulsory uniforms for swimming
lessons. A timetable of classes and lesson start times are as
follows.

The much anticipated cricket game between LORDS and BLS is still in negotiations for a rescheduled date.
The match last term was postponed due to the LORDS HPE teacher falling ill a day before the scheduled
start; this was a blessing for Bethania as three of the starting line-up was nursing injuries that would have put
them out of the game. Although the injuries are now mended we are still awaiting a new date for the match.
Special Guests at Bethania Lutheran Worship this
Sunday 12th October will be Rev Reid and

who form the Apostle 13 Ministry. 9:00 am All
