At the learning stations, you will identify the connotation of words and analyze the impact the
word choice has on the reader. Discuss your answers with other team members after completing
each activity.

Station One: Mood
Mood is the feelings the reader gets from reading the author’s words. Words have a positive or negative connotation, or feeling associated with them, in addition to their actual meaning.

Directions: Read the following paragraph and answer the questions below.
Night came on, and a full moon rose high over the trees into the sky, lighting
the land till it lay bathed in ghostly day. And with the coming of the night, brooding
and mourning by the pool, Buck became alive to a stirring of the new life in the forest other than that which the Yeehats had made. He stood up, listening and scenting. From far away drifted a faint, sharp yelp, followed by a chorus of similar sharp
yelps. As the moments passed the yelps grew closer and louder. Again Buck knew
them as things heard in that other world which persisted in his memory. He walked
to the center of the open space and listened. It was the call, the many-noted call,
sounding more luringly and compellingly than ever before. And as never before, he
was ready to obey. John Thornton was dead. The last tie was broken. Man and the
claims of man no longer bound him.

Directions: Select a newspaper editorial. Read the editorial and look for words that have a positive or negative connotation. Complete the chart below. An example is provided in the chart. Use a dictionary or thesaurus if you need help.
Example (negative connotation): The coach was unyielding about the amount of time spent doing drill exercises.
Example (positive connotation): The coach was firm about the amount of time spent doing drill exercises.
Authors choose words with a positive or negative connotation in order to influence the way a reader thinks or feels.

Directions: The words in each word group have the same denotation (meaning) but have either a positive, negative, or neutral connotation (feeling associated with a word). Determine the

The Star-Spangled Banner
Francis Scott Key wrote his famous four-versed poem on September 14, 1814, during the
Battle of Fort McHenry. The poem was later set to music. On March 3, 1931, the song officially
became the national anthem.
The Star-Spangled Banner
O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming!
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the Heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
