There are many ways we gather information from others:
Read: books, magazines, newspapers ,poems, web sites
Watch: TV Shows, movies, video games
Listen: stories/poems read to us, songs

Essential Questions:

 What questions will foster a student’s understanding of the
power objective?
 What is the point of this (insert media here) story, movie, poem
etc.?
 How do we know this is the point?
 How do we prove we understand what we read/watch/listen to?
 Why do authors share their ideas?
 How does an author make sure I understand?




Why is it important that students are able to demonstrate
understanding of this power objective? This is the “so what?”
about the power objective.
All text or media must have a point (main idea) to make sense.
Details support the main idea.
We show what we understand by saying the main idea and the
details that support it.
Main idea is the big idea the author is trying to share with me
so I understand.
Theme is a lesson the author is trying to share with me so I
understand.
