Requirements
1. Explain the proper safety procedures to fallow when preparing surfaces and applying coatings.
2. Do the following:
a. Explain three ways coating can improve a surface.
b. Explain the difference between oil-based paints, acrylic-based paints, and water-based paints.
c. Explain where you would apply enamel paint, flat paint, wood stain, and varnish, and explain the importance of
sheen.
d. Tell why each is best for these uses.
3. Prepare and paint two different surfaces using patching material, caulking, and the proper primer and top coats.
(Suggested projects: interior or exterior wall, a door, furniture, concrete floor or wall, porch railing, or a fence.
Your counselor must preapprove the project.)
4. Prepare and paint an item using harmonizing colors that you have selected using the color wheel in this book
(pg. 30-31).
5. Show the right way to use clean maintain and store painting equipment.
6. Explain the importance of ladder safety, environmental responsibility, and personal hygiene when painting.
7. Explain some of the environmental and health issues concerning removing paint, applying paint and discarding
old paint.
8. Find out about career opportunities in the paint industry. Discuss the training and experience required, and
explain why this profession might interest you.

Requirement 1 *Safety
- Stay alert - Wear appropriate clothing- long sleeves - Wear eye protection - Respirator- Some paints contain
harmful chemicals - Wear gloves when working with paints containing harmful chemicals

*2a - Improves appearance of an old structure - Protects from harmful elements - Prevent from further aging
*2b - Oil-based paint-dries slower then water-based paint and has a strong odor - Water-based paint- dries
quickly and has fewer odors. - Acrylic-based paint- Type of water based paint popular for its ability to retain
color, its durability and easy clean up. Contains plastic.
*2c -Enamel paint- Metal Appliances (Baked to harden) - Flat paint- Walls or ceilings, where ever you don’t
want shine. - Wood stain- Wooded objects - Varnish- use on wooden objects after stain is used - SheenAffects the performance of the finish coat: the amount of abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and overall
beauty. * 2d - Enamel- It’s durable and keeps metal from rusting - Flat- Doesn’t reflect light or create a shine Wood stain- Change the color and appearance of wood. - Varnish- Protects and water proofs wood.
• Requirement 5 *Brushes- Use to paint areas rollers can’t reach. Clean after each use. For storage wrap it heavy
paper or original package *Rollers- Use on large areas. To clean remove cover from frame. Wash thoroughly. Store
in original wrapper. If paint cannot be washed out properly dispose of the roller. *Spray paint- Use in an area with
proper ventilation. Used for even application of paint. Wipe up any drip off the can and replace the cap. Store in a
dry area away from heat sources. If the can is empty properly dispose of it.

Requirement 6 *Ladder Safety- Helps to prevent an injury *Environmental responsibility- Be aware of the
chemical in paint. Many are harmful to the environment if not properly disposed of. *Personal hygiene- you are in
constant contact with chemicals while painting. Washing your hand and showering after painting reduce irritation,
ingestion of toxins, or becoming ill from toxins.
Requirement 7 *Removing paint- you can easily breathe in or ingest paint particles. These particles can
threaten anyone (humans or animals) that is nearby. *Applying paint-Chemicals from paint may irritate your skin.

Spilled paint can get into the water and animals may lick up any spilled paint. *Disposal of paint- Allow paint to
completely dry in can before replacing lid and throwing it out. Any spilled paint is harmful to animals and can get in
the water.
