On May 6, Mark DeCracker presented a slide show for
us that gave us information on the “Trail of Hope” in
Lyons. We will be taking several trips in June to see the
beautiful nature trail. We will also be painting bricks to
help create a yellow brick road that is being created
there this year. I look forward to helping our residents
to do what they can to help build up this wonderful
project.
Mother’s Day was celebrated with beautiful corsages
for all of the ladies, as well as a Mother’s Day Brunch.
We were also able to get outside, and enjoy a Mother’s
Day Tea on the patio complete with punch and éclair
cake. It was a beautiful afternoon.

MAY RECap
I can’t believe that May is almost over. It has been a
beautiful spring despite the rains we received. We are
all grateful not to be in the same position as our
neighbors in the southern tier. Our thought and prayers
go out to them.
After a long, long winter we are glad to be getting
outside and enjoying the beautiful flowers, trees that
are planted all around The Terrace. The garden group
has been meeting regularly and we are all eager to get
started. Our peas, lettuce and radishes are all up and
doing well. Stop by in the next few weeks and look at
our progress. We have a lot of great gardeners here!
We had lots of fun on Cinco De Mayo. We enjoyed chips
and salsa and some homemade churros. We had lots of
Spanish music to sing and listened to Lucy L sing to us in
Spanish – what an entertaining lady and such a treat
A local 4-H group presented a fashion show and Cornell
Cooperative Extension gave us a guided slide show on
how to draw different kinds of birds to The Terrace.
Seneca Park Zoo came and helped to build up our
beautiful butterfly garden. They will be returning in July
to do a butterfly release.
We were entertained this month by A Touch of Joy, The
Golden Boys, and Richard Chaffee.
During May we also celebrated “Backyard Games
Week” by playing Bocce, Horseshoes, Balloon Volleyball
squirt gun fun and much more. We also wrote letters to
the troops, played cards, LCR, Yahtzee, as well as going
on shopping trips and scenic rides. We also baked up a
storm and crafted a beautiful gazing ball for our garden.
I hope you enjoy the rest of this glorious May and hope
June will be just as nice.

LOOKING AHEAD TO JUNE
The first day of summer is on June 21st. I think this was
the shortest spring on record. We have a lot of catching
up to do.
Our garden will be a big priority in June. We will be
busy planting the flowers and vegetables that we are
going to be growing this year in our raised beds. We
will be trying some new things (garlic, sunflowers,
pears and more), as well as many favorites (tomatoes,
zucchini, cucumbers, etc.). Please feel free to step
outside and watch our project.
We will be visiting the Trail of Hope in Lyons and
continuing to paint bricks for the yellow brick road that
is being built there.
During June we will be entertained by a Touch of Joy,
Larry Bitterman, and Aaron Karpella. Our little friends
from Lincoln School will be doing their final
performance for this year on June 18th and they will be
staying for lunch. We are so lucky to have them come
and visit every month and share what they were
learning through beautiful song and dance. We hope
they all have a great summer…and Mrs. Stephanie also.
We hope to be taking advantage of the great June
weather by watching our swallows, bluebirds, and
finches that we have been attracting to The Terrace.
We have also been working on Garden Art, so if you are
out walking check out some of the creations all around
The Terrace.
June looks to be really busy with scenic rides, bingo,
Wednesday horseshoes competitions (a big activity
here) trips out for lunch, visiting local art museums,
cards and games, shopping and much more.
We are looking forward to an exciting summer. We are
planning a car hop and sock hop so watch for
information about that coming soon.
Have a great summer!
IN HONOR OF FATHER’S DAY A LITTLE
FATHER’S DAY HUMOR –
FATHER’S PAST AND PRESENT.
In 1900 a father could count on his children
to join the family business.
Today a father hopes his children will come
home long enough to show him how to use
his smartphone.
In 1900 when a father entered the room the
children rose to attention.
Today the children glance up and grunt
“Dad, you are invading my space”.
In 1900 a father said “A man’s home is his
castle”.
Today a father says, “Welcome to the
money pit”.
In 1900 a man would find his wife and
children at the supper table.
Today a father comes home to a note that
says, Pick up Erik at lacrosse and Danielle at
cheerleading and there is a pizza in the
stove”.

Jackson and Perkins Co. Is one of the largest
and best known horticulture farms in the
U.S.
Initially Perkins began experimenting with
cultivating grapes and other fruits, but had a
growing passion for roses. In 1984 the
company hired E. Alvin Miller, a professional
propagator and breeder. This led to the
addition of many additional farms, but the
High Street address remained the center of
operations.
In 1910 Charles Perkins son of George
Perkins took over as President. His father
lived in Santa Ana, CA in the winters where
he began a large poultry business. After
George resigned, his cousin “Charlie” took
over until the 1960’s. In the first several
decades of the twentieth century Jackson
and Perkins received worldwide fame.
Jackson and Perkins not only sold roses, but
clematis, lilacs, boxwoods, azaleas, and
rhododendrons.
Today, J and P is located in Hodges, South
Carolina and a division of the Park Seed Co.
They distribute more than one million
catalogs and ship more than 3 million roses
and other plants each year.
