I attended Indiana State University. Prior to coming to the Jr./Sr. High School, I taught at Rockville Elementary. My hobbies include traveling & reading. I have two daughters, Glory & Skylar. Ron Alabaugh 7th grade social studies, AP US History, AP World History I'm from Clinton, Indiana. I graduated from Indiana State University in 2013. I did my student teaching at Rockville and coached baseball and girls basketball. I had a 20 year career in the automotive industry before going back to college to become a teacher. I just got married on October 3rd. I have one son and a step-daughter. My hobbies include baseball card collecting and hanging out with friends and family. I am super excited about finally being part of the Rockville family and love coming to school every day. This system is used to notify parents of important events and news regarding their school. Individual buildings use it for things like notification of School Picture Day or Parent Teacher Conferences. The District will use this system to notify parents of corporation wide events like weather delays or closings. When normal announcement calls are made, School Messenger will call guardian phone and whatever phone number was listed in the Alert 1 field of their student demographics page in Harmony. When the district has to make Emergency calls, it will call all the numbers that you have listed in your phone and alert fields. If you need to update your phone numbers, log into your students Harmony portal and update the numbers as needed. Classroom News AP Biology students are running a campaign to get their cell organelle elected as "The Most Important Organelle". Working in groups they are trying to persuade designated faculty, staff, and classmates to vote for their organelle. Projects include posters, pamphlets, mudslinging, and campaign speeches. Election Day is October 13th. Stay tuned for results. Physics students have been busy performing labs dealing with speed, velocity, and air resistance. Students had to design an egg apparatus that would allow the egg to survive being dropped from the top of the football bleachers. Many succeeded; some had a mess. Chemistry students are learning about electrons and their specific configurations. Students enjoyed performing flame tests on multiple metals and were excited to see all the different colors produced. Biology I classes just finished a web quest on Biomes and are ready to start learning about Chemistry in Biology. Pre-AP Biology class is learning about Population Ecology. Biology II is finishing up a chapter on Earth's History and getting ready to learn about Evolution. Principles of Biomedical Science class is learning about gel electrophoresis and DNA fingerprinting. Students in Mrs. Woodard's sophomore pre-AP English class are practicing different discussion and note-taking strategies in class. Students have enjoyed discussing different topics in the fishbowl environment, such as technology in schools and discipline issues. They have also been practicing note-taking methods with both fiction and non-fiction pieces. Criminal Justice students have completed presentations on amendments and court cases related to law enforcement. The following guest speakers have talked to the students: retired police sheriff, Rockville police, IN State police, instructor at Law Enforcement Academy, K-9, CSI, prescription drug enforcement officer, and deputy sheriff about amendments World History completed presentation on Asia and Africa and played a game called the Silk Road. Government students complete a unit on the branches of government. Students conducted oral presentations using power point. In addition, they developed games, skits, review questions, and discussion questions over their branch. Sociology students conducted oral presentation using power point, In addition, students developed skits, review questions, and discussion question over the unit on adolescence and adulthood. Students just finished a section on deviance and crime. The AP Language & Composition classes are perfecting the art of arguing through the debate process. Using a modified Lincoln-Douglas debate format, students presented the pros and cons of topics like legalizing marijuana, lowering the drinking age, testing on animals, government subsidies of renewable energy, arming school personnel, and capital punishment. 7th grade English students have studied subjects, verbs and adjectives, have learned the web tool Animoto to create a book trailer of a self-selected novel, and are currently finishing the novel Unwind that is part of a study of modern medical techniques. FFA News The Turkey Run FFA competed in the Soils Judging Career Development Event on Friday, Oct. 2. In this competition, students examine four sites for the soil structure and land capabilities. For example, they examine if a particular area can be used for a home, sewer system, field or other agriculture use. The students are learning about the foundation of everything we do and the principles that all of our homes are built on. The team consisting of McMullen, Buell, Lien and H. Jones placed 12th out of 27 teams. High individuals for Turkey Run were McMullen and Buell. hoe digs out a big hole. A back- Vision screenings for 8th graders will be October 6th. All 8th graders who wear glasses/contacts need to make sure they have them with them this day. Parents will only be notified if their student does NOT pass the screening. 7TH GRADE PARENTS INTERACT NEWS 7th graders are not to use scientific calculators. Mrs. Lugar needs to ensure that they have mastered the skills that those calculators do for them. If you have already purchased a scientific calculator, just save it for 8th grade. This year, a simple dollar store calculator will be perfect. (Try to find one that includes a square root key.) We apologize for any inconvenience, but students have been reminded of this since the first day of school. Thank you for your cooperation Interact revs up for fall clean-up community service: Members have helped clean-up after the September 4 and 11 home football games and will assist the Rockville Rotary Club with its highway clean-up efforts on October 5, just prior to the Covered Bridge Festival. They, too, will assist the Rotary with drink sales at the Drink Tent on the square throughout the festival. 8th Grade Banks Champs The 8th grade volleyball team brought home the Banks of the Wabash Tournament trophy for the second year in a row. The Lady Rox won the first match by defeating Turkey Run 26-24 and 2513. They beat Riverton Parke in the championship game, 25-15, 18-25, and 17-15. Karlee Jeffries led all scorers with 20 points. Macenzie Cole served 19 points, and Macy Millspaugh added 14. Their current record is 6-5 . Cross Country Kudos Cross country girls take home the first known team trophy! Rockville High School ran in the North Vermillion Invitational. The girls tied with Attica for second place, but in a tie-breaker they won. Therefore, the girls received a runner-up trophy for the invitational. Box Top Competition Please help your school by clipping Box Tops from various different products sold by General Mills. Rockville Jr./Sr. High School earns 10 cents for each Box Top clipped. Simply clip, have your student bring them to school, and give them to Mrs. Forrest. Thank you for your support! Stamp Cancellation Contest Winner For approximately 21 years, the Rockville Jr. Sr. High School art students have submitted pen and ink drawings of county bridges to the postmaster of Rockville. The postmaster, with the assistance of the staff, reviews and picks the winning drawing to be represented on a commemorative, cancellation postmark. The postmark is then used during the 10 days of the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival. This stamp is not only used as a postmark to cancel stamps, but has evolved into a collector’s image for tourists and locals alike. can see how their artistic talent can be used in the real world, where they can understand how art experiences affect daily life and identify opportunities for involvement in the arts. All entries will be on display at the post office for most of October. Zoe Adams-Schlee, a senior at Rockville Jr. Sr. High School, had the winning entry this year. She is the daughter of Chris and Shara Schlee of Rockville. Schlee’s winning entry is of the Wilkins Mill Bridge. Students’ pen and ink drawings were submitted again this year from Rita Jacks’ art class as a community project. Thirty-eight students plus Mr. King and Mr. Alabaugh enjoyed the day. News from the Guidance Department UPCOMING PSAT TEST Upcoming College Visits All sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT on the morning of 10/14 at the high school. The state will be paying the fees for both grades this year. Freshmen who opted to take the PSAT 9 will test on November 18th. The test is free to students who receive free/reduced lunch, and $10 to all others. 10/5 - Manchester 10/19 - ISU 10/28 - Indiana Tech NEW SCHOLARSHIP LIST AVAILABLE!! SESSIONS FOR P/T CONFERENCES During Parent/Teacher Conferences on Monday, 10/12, Mrs. Mitchell will hold informational sessions in the library. Each session will last approximately 15 minutes (with time after each for questions). Sessions will include NCAA Rules for DI & DII (4:00), Diploma & Graduation Requirements (4:30), and Applying to College & Financial Aid (5:00). No registration is necessary. PARKE COUNTY PROJECT Students from Mrs. Woodard's etymology class and Mr. Harper's Interact Club recently completed a research project featuring people and places from Parke County's past. The exhibits will be on display at the Rockville Public Library during the festival. They will also be displayed at the courthouse through 2016 as part of the bicentennial celebration.
