WEST BERGHOLT BUS SERVICE
CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITION
As you may be aware, over the last few weeks we have experienced significant issues with the quality
of service on the West Bergholt route. A number of parents have asked the school to publish Essex
County Council’s Transport Services guidelines as to what students should do if their bus is late:
Back in September 2013 Stanway School student Sam Batterham 8LRY claimed victory in a creative
writing competition about ’Summer Memories’. Tutor Doctor, Colchester sent in leaflets regarding a
creative writing competition they were running. Students were told the story could have been about
anything they enjoyed about their summertime or from another’s summer perspective.

Students should wait at the pick-up point for 30 minutes before making alternative transport
arrangements for getting into school.
For emergency purposes students and parents/guardians should ensure they have the
telephone number of the operator that performs the contract.
In the event of an emergency, such as a breakdown, the driver will judge whether it is better for
students to stay on board or leave the vehicle. Students should always follow the instructions
given by the driver and should not leave the vehicle without the permission of the driver.
If any student leaves the vehicle against the driver’s advice, they do so at their own risk.

BIKE-ABILITY
Bike-ability was really good and exciting because it not only teaches you how to ride your bike safely
and carefully, it is also fun to join in and learn. Firstly for level 2 you learn how to turn corners at Tjunctions and main roads and what position to be in at the junction. Level 3 is a bit more complex as
you would expect and you also learn the rules of the road.
Sam was voted as the winner of the competition and James Cracknell from Tutor Doctor told the
school that Sam had submitted a wonderful piece of work and was a standout choice as the winner in
his category. Sam wrote about how seasons change so quickly down on Brighton beach, like a cycle
repeating itself.
Sam received his prize of an ASUS
laptop worth £360 at a
presentation at Wivenhoe House
on 18th November 2013. One of
the judges has their own slot on
Saint FM and invited Sam on to
her radio show on Tuesday, 7th
January 2014 to talk about the
competition.
Mr Cracknell also told us that
Tutor Doctor were delighted that
their competition generated some
very creative pieces of work from
The Stanway School.
Overall it was a great experience and it taught us well. When the Year 7s get involved next year they
will really enjoy it even though it is a very serious subject to learn. You have to listen to the instructor
because they are excellent and will look after you very well.
Well done, Sam!
Thanks for a great experience.

Thanks to Hilary Wicks,
Mark Haines and the rest
of the Bike-ability team
from Essex County
Council for running such
an excellent programme.
There will be an
opportunity for any Key
Stage 3 student to take
part in this programme
after the Easter holidays.

NATIONAL SHOOTING COMPETITION
Tom Willingham 9HWA recently took part in a
National Shooting competition to represent his
club in a series of shoots using an air rifle. He was
competing against other clubs from all over the
country.
Tom came first in his class in 8 out of 9 shoots and recorded his
best score of 55 out of 60. He is now the United Kingdom
Association for Hunterfield Target (UKAHFT) Junior Winner 2013 in
the age 9 - 13 category. Tom was awarded badges for his cap,
which he now has 10 in total, a tankard and a shield in an awards
ceremony that was held in the Midlands.
This is a wonderful achievement. Well done, Tom
