The Scientific Method - UAMS College of Public Health

The Scientific
Method
1.
Problem or Question
State the problem or ask a question.
2. Hypothesis
Form a hypothesis (educated
guess) about what you think will
happen. You should use your prior
knowledge and even do some
research in order to come up
with a good hypothesis.
3. Experiment
Do an experiment to test the hypothesis. You should identify one variable
to change in the experiment and one variable to stay the same. Then
create a list of materials and a procedure.
4. Gather and Record Data
Make and gather observations and record data.
Observations are what you see, hear, taste,
smell, touch or measure. Record data by
creating a graph, chart or drawing.
5. Conclusion
State your conclusion. A conclusion is a
summary that you create after interpreting
your data. Remember to compare your
data to your hypothesis and explain what
your data means.
For science notebooks,
cut along the dotted line.
