-Algebra 1 Credit Recovery- Ms. Smith Room 4-304 E-mail: [email protected] Course Description: This course is for sophomores and juniors who have yet to pass the End of Course exam. The main goal of the course is to get students successfully through the exam. Topics include simplifying expressions, evaluating and solving equations and inequalities, and graphing linear and quadratic functions and relations. Real world applications are presented within the course content and a function's approach is emphasized. The key concepts you will encounter in this algebra course include number systems, variables, linear equations, functions, graphing, systems of linear equations, inequalities, quadratics and polynomial equations. This course can only be passed with successful grades in the course AND a passing score on the End of Course Exam. This credit is required for High School Graduation. Since this class is a remediation class, work will be required to be completed on the computer, as well as in the textbook. Expectations of Student Learning: In order to pass this course, students will need to do the following: -Keep an organized and up-to-date notebook. Students will need to use this notebook to take and review concepts in class. -Attend class. You miss important information when you are gone. -Complete all homework. Homework is essential if you want to practice and understand the concepts. Practice truly does make perfect. Homework will need to be printed/copied at home. I will not usually provide a hard copy of homework for students. -Study for tests. This includes reviewing notes and homework, attending tutoring, asking the teacher for help, looking online for help and more problems. -Remain focused and on-task in class. Try to solve problems on your own before asking for help. End of Course Exams: During this school year, students will have the opportunity to take the Algebra 1 End of Course Exam 3-4 times, if needed. Each exam should be taken seriously. Cheating, use of cell phones and asking other students for help will result in an invalidated test. MathXLforschool.com: The goal of this course is to get each student through the Algebra 1 End of Course exam. In order to do so, we will be using the MathXL website for support and remediation. Quizzes: Throughout the Six-Week Marking Period, there will be many quizzes based upon End of Course Test Item Specs. Some quizzes may be announced, some may not. You may use your reference sheet. You may not, however, use your book, notes or a partner, unless otherwise stated. . Talking during the quiz and cheating will result in a 0 on the test and/or referral. If caught talking or cheating, no make-up will be provided. Notebook: You will be required to have a 3-subject College Rule Mead FiveStar notebook for this course. In this notebook, we will take notes, work on examples, synthesize and practice material/concepts and keep track of our progress through the year. If you are missing notes, you may come in at lunch and/or stay after school with the permission of the teacher in order to make up any work. The notebook will be graded once per six-weeks. It must be in order, organized and up-to-date. Homework: Homework will be posted online on the Boca Ciega Website under lesson plans. It will not usually be provided in class. As we are on block scheduling, you will have two days to complete your homework. You do not have to print homework unless otherwise stated. You may copy problems from the computer onto your own sheet of paper. Make-Up Work: If you miss work, it is up to you to make sure that you get what you need. You may go online to bocaciega.com and search for any work under lesson plans. If you miss a pop quiz, you will not be allowed to make it up. If your absence was deemed “excused” by the school, the quiz grade will be excused. If you are marked “unexcused” then you may not make up pop quizzes. Tests and quizzes will be given one week to be made up. In order to make up a test or quiz, you must set aside a time during lunch or after school with the teacher. In-class work and homework will be given the amount of days missed from my class to be made up. Materials: The following materials will need to be brought every day: - 3-subject College Rule Mead FiveStar Notebook - Pencil/Writing Utensil - Loose Leaf Paper - Calculator* - Reference Sheet - Homework Failure to procure these materials on any given day will result in detention or reduction in grade, unless otherwise stated. Scientific Calculators will be provided in class, but student must trade in a personal item in order to borrow. Cell Phones: Cell phones and/or music players will not be permitted in class. Use of cell phones and/or music players in class will result in referral and/or collection of item by teacher.
