EPA FILE No: EPA 05/07/4453 DOC: South Australia MARS/PRISM: Ms Ilona Balint, General Manager Adjudication Branch Australian Competition and Consumer Commission GPO Box 3131 CANBERRA ACT 2601 Dear Ms Balint Thank you for the invitation to comment on the application by Refrigerant Reclaim Australia to revoke application A91079 and substitute applicationA91008. The effect of the request by RRA will be to increase the industry agreed levy on refrigerant gases imported and sold in Australia from $1.50 per kilogram to $2.00 per kilogram of ozone depleting and synthetic greenhouse gas refrigerants, to undertake the scheme for their recovery and destruction as required by the Montreal Protocol and to assist in reduction of Greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol. EPA supports the intent of the scheme as an effective mechanism to protect the environment, and particularly wishes to encourage the application of product stewardship to deal with products at the end of their useful life, through schemes such as this, funded by an industry-agreed levy. EPA is therefore supportive of the applications, to ensure that the funding provided by the levy is sufficient to continue the scheme. For further information on this matter, please contact Mr Rob Middlin, Senior Adviser Product Stewardship on email rob.middlin@ epa.sa.gov.au or telephone (08) 8463 3383. Yours sincerely Tony Circelli A/DEPUTY CHIEF EXECUTIVE ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AUTHORITY AUST.PCOMPETITION & CONSUMER COMMISSION 1 4 JAN 2008 Date: 8 /08 Environment Protection Authority GPO Box 2607 ADELAIDE SA 5001 I 77 Grenfelt Street Adelaide South Australia T (08) 8204 2000 I F (08) 8204 2020 11800 623 445 (country areas) I www.epa.sa.gov.au
