A Ringling Brothers Family Picture.
Happy IOOth Birthday Dear Ringling
Brothers and BarI:lum and Bailey Circus
One hundred years ago, in 1870, a well·known show.
man, P. T. Barnum, decided to start a traveling circus.
The show traveled by horse and wagon. It took around
600 horses to move it. The next year the circus started
traveling by train. Barnum and Ja.m es A. Bailey, who
also had a circus, put their shows together to make one
big circus in 1880.
The Ringling Brothers had started a circus in 1884
in Baraboo, Wisconsin. This cir·c us started with nine
wagons. It became larger and larger. In 1907 the Ringling Brothers Circus bought the Barnum and Bailey show.
This made a really big show. It took about 100 rail·
road cars to carry the circus. Of the 900 people on the
circus train, 300 were performers. Six hundred were
men who put up the circus tent, the "Big Top." These
men were called roustabouts. There was no air conditioning then. It got. very hot under the tents. On rainy
days the elephants would get stuck in the mud. Wind and
storms were always a r.roblem.
The days of the' Big Top" and the circus parade are
~ver. In 1956 this circus started playing in buildings and
arenas, But wherever it plays, it is still the "Greatest
Show on Earth."

The Circus Clowns Make Us Laugh
A clown can copy what another clown does, his
actions and tricks, but they cannot copy another clown's
face. No other clown would hav~ anything to do with
him if he did. All clowns are nicknamed HJoey" after "a
comic that lived, years ~go. Th~re 'are t~o types of
clowns. The "Whiteface'; clown moves about very well
and is sad though gay. The "August" clown stumbles
around, has pants that are always falling down, and
always dresses very funny. The Ringling ~rothers' ana
Bar~um an~ Bail~r circus has a Clown College in
VenIce, FlorIda, where people can ~earn to be clowns.
