an Editorial
OUT ON A LIMB
Honest Abe's timing was off by five score and some years and he was more
than a little confused over authorship.lt is now that you have to endure
something to "little note nor long remember." That is the bad news. The
good news is that editorials are not included in the planning for future
issues of ANCESTORS WEST.
Temptation was strong to title this piece after Gwyn Griffin's novel of
a few years past, "An Operational Necessity." That would have properly
described the motivation for the actions to be explained. Ultimately the
decision was to use one more in keeping with the state of mind after the
fait accompli.Arborescent terms have been so generously adapted to gene
alogical use it seemed appropriate enough to employ one to head the fol
lowing apologia.
The radical change in format can have hardly escaped your attention. To
reassure those uncomfortable with change let me hasten to point out that
the major effects are of a mechanical nature. The objective was improve
ment in legibility through conversion to offset printing from mimeograph
as used in the past. To accomplish this, and keep costs within budgetary
limits, it was necessary to utilize space more efficiently. This is be
ing done through reduction of the size of type. One of the earliest bum
per stickers was one that read,"If you can read this, you're too close."
If you can read this, I am close enough.
Half the paper formerly required will now be used, a fact that won't win
any literary awards but ought to be worth at least a nod from a few con
servationist groups. By exploiting the cover surfaces for copy it is now
possible to include approximately twenty per cent more information in an
average size issue. You are getting more in less, as the Phoenicians are
known to have told their business clients.
Content will continue to emphasize vital records of Santa Barbara County
with expansion to include baptismal, marriage, and cemetery entries of
parochial origin. Beyond this many private sources will be solicited for
bible and other family records, including narratives of family movement.
Succeeding issues will include features on many western families of note
with references to their colonial and foreign roots. Historical articles
illustrative of past lifestyles will appear.
Space does not allow list
ing the many works already in progress. Our goal will be to educate, in
form and, perhaps, even entertain you.
Genealogy doesn't have to be all
sex and violence.

THE LATE, LAMENTED BOSTON EVENING TRANSCRIPT
The most prestigious newspaper genealogical department ever published in
the United States was that of The Boston Evening Transcript. Over a per
iod extending from 1904 to 1941,queries,answers and notes appeared twice
weekly.Contributors were generally identified by initials or pseudonyms,
sometimes cogent, sometimes cryptic. With familiarization it is possible
to distinguish the writing of a skilled genealogist, based on solid, de
pendable data and reliable sources to gain invaluable clues to one's own
research. A system of serial numbers was also employed to associate the
queries and answers. Thus, you find, sometimes running over a period of
many years, exchanges involving countless contributors with any number of
opening queries.
The columns are available on microcards (opaque reductions, not to be
confused with microfiche .which are viewed by transmitted light) and are
represented in the collection of the Los Angeles Central Library. At the
Heritage Library in Glendale, the Transcript pages can be found bound in
portfolio form. The portfolios are by far the easiest to work with, mak
ing Glendale the logical place for research for those wishing to avoid
eyestrain and waiting for access to a viewer. There is one problem, how
ever, an index has to be consulted to locate items that may be of inter
est to you, that index is at Los Angeles and not at Glendale. The refer
ences are contained in the American Genealogical-Biographical Index to
American Genealogical and Local History Materials. This work, dating from
1952, succeeds the earlier American Genealogical Index, 1942-1952. There
are
many volumes filling a number of shelves.
The entries list all in
formation available to the editors on an individual in the following or
der: Surname, given name(s), maiden name for married females, the year of
birth, and state or country of birth. Below this are the various
refer
ences. In the case of one in the Boston Transcript, it is shown with the
serial number followed by the date of publication. In itself, the index
is a valuable tool. By comparing references with names one is able to
align potential relationships.
The indices and microcards are published by the Godfrey Memorial Library
in Middletown, Connecticut. They can be found in other libraries in the
state as well, a telephone call will confirm the availability. This ar
ticle has concerned itself with but two of the most accessible
with the
intent of bringing this wellspring to the attention of those researchers
who may have not been aware of its importance, or of its very existence.

THE GAME OF THE NAME
CALIFORNIA PLACE NAMES, Gudde, University of California Press, tells us:
Birds of a different feather, the seagull and the quail, appear in place
names close to one another in GAVIOTA and SISQUOC, the former Spanish
and the latter Chumash.
GOBERNADOR canyon and creek, near Carpinteria, are most likely named af
ter the gobernadora shrub (Zyglophyllum tridentatum) as there is no rea
son to connect it with the Spanish word for 'governor.'
OJAI, originally named Nordhoff in 1874 after the famous writer, was re
named in 1916 after the valley in which it is situated. A rancheria de
Ojai is shown around 1834, and the name, with variants,
appears earlier
on a list of rancherias of Mission San Buenaventura. The name is Chumash
(A'hwai), meaning 'moon.'
BREA is Spanish for 'tar.'
Thus,
La Brea Tar Pits is The Tar Tar Pits.
Pismu in Indian also means 'tar.' Welcome to PISMO BEACH.

SO SWEET A PUCE
It might make one in love with death, to think that one should be buried
in so sweet a place.
Percy Bysshe Shelley
1792-1822
The article, beginning on the following page, Santa Barbara County Hos
pital Cemetery, is distinguished by the appearance of several surnames
of genealogical interest and the namesake of a famous personage. The in
troduction has appropriated its title and opening lines from the preface
to Adonais, the poet's elegy to Keats after the latter's death in Rome,
and burial there in the Protestant Cemetery.
Nothing could provide more
irony than the comparison between Keat's resting place and the neglected
field, overgrown with chaparral, where Percy Bysshe Shelley, ca. 18471897, reposes. Lest one rush to judgement about the worth of the souls
whose mortal remains have been consigned to such spots, consider all who
have disappeared without trace in the Old West. For those searching
for
these 'vanished Americans,' this list may provide some clues.
While there was not time for researching all the names, some preliminary
study was made on Shelley, poet and namesake. The Shelley buried in Santa
Barbara was from New York State and had resided in this area for about 7
years before his demise. The poet's great grandfather, Timothy Shelley,
emigrated to America where he married Mrs. Johanna Plum of New York. Sir
Bysshe Shelley, Bart., 1731-1815, the grandfather, born in Newark, N.J.,
moved to England where he successively married two heiresses, doing his
fortune no harm. Shelley's spouse, as you no doubt know, left her mark
in letters with "Frankenstein."
The hospital cemetery qualifies as a Potter's Field. In tribute to those
unfortunates, let us consider the origin of the term, keeping in mind
that not enough emphasis can be placed on the word 'stranger,' with all
its implications.
Then Judas, who had betrayed, him, when he saw that he was condemned, re
pented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the
chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned, in that I have betrayed
the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? See thou to that.
And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed; and
went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces,
and said,It is not lawful to put them in the treasury, because it is the
price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's
field to bury strangers in.
MATTHEW xxvii, 3 through 7.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY HOSPITAL CEMETERY, 1892-1904
Between 1892 and 1904,
inclusive, 100 persons were
buried in the Santa
Barbara County Hospital Cemetery adjacent to the hospital at Cacique and
South Salinas Streets. In 1917, after a new hospital was built and the
old site sold,
the remains were transferred to the northeast
corner of
the new hospital property. Listed below are the names of the 100 as they
appear in the Register of Deaths in the Recorder's office. In the list,
which was compiled by the Recorder's office in 1964, (1) shows the name
was all or partially defaced on the headstone though the death date and
age was decipherable. (2) indicates data on the marker was totally ob
literated or the headstone missing.

MEMBER ANCESTOR TABLES, DATING FROM THE IMMIGRANT
In the Bicentennial
Year the Central New York Genealogical Society pub
lished a series of volumes of Six
Generation Ancestor
Tables submitted
by its members. As explained by the Society, the format was styled after
that devised by the late Donald Lines Jacobus. Readers were warned that
acceptance of names, dates and places without seeking independent proof
from primary sources should be avoided. The intent of the project was to
assist not only the Society's members, but all persons with any New York
State questions. With the introduction of a regular feature in ANCESTORS
WEST emulating CNYGS's effort we hope to realize similar aims, but with
out geographical restrictions. The data will be presented in less detail
but will continue beyond six generations,
the immigrant ancestor.
where appropriate, to include
Immigrant parents will be thus noted, excluding
like reference to children accompanying them and others born outside the
United States or colonial America after the family's initial arrival. As
most of the tables
thus far received have
included only the country or
state for place names, the charts will be prepared showing them in that
way. This can be expanded to include towns or counties in the future if
that is felt necessary. Unknowns will be indicated by question marks. If
dates are approximate, they will be underlined. Jacobus' numbering sys
tem will be employed with generations delineated by extra spacing. Col
umns following names will be in order of year of birth, place, year of
death and place. Members are urged to submit tables, which will be pub
lished in order of receipt and subject to availability of space.

THE IRISH ARE COMING
Patricia White,
a freelance writer and former New York Times columnist,
who spoke at the Society's February meeting,
besides
stirring
up much
interest with her talk, has donated data from her Irish genealogical re
search which will serve as the basis of an article to appear in the next
issue of ANCESTORS WEST. What Alex Hailey did for Black American geneal
ogy, Ms. White is attempting to do for the "White" Irish. Whether you
accept the definition that "History is gossip" or "History is written by
winners," it is easy to understand her feeling that history has handed
the Irish the dirty end of the shillelagh. This is comprehended when one
considers how many with "true" Irish ancestry bear English surnames. Of
course, many Americans have Gaelic surnames adapted from diverse nation
alities, Zajic to O'Hare as an example. And one cannot forget, "If the
name Fitz, it's Norman." Coleridge is quoted as saying, "What is a name
but air?" A fine reminder for us not to put on airs about our names, af
ter all, what would the Omarchadhas have to say about the Murphys?
Ms. White has a work in progress that will reveal much about early Irish
settlers in America. The feeling is that it will dispell many myths con
cerning the contributions of various groups in the founding. As she is
quick to point out,
how fitting it was that a dying
nation play an im
portant role in the birth of another.
We may do our shopping for folklore from different shelves, but it would
be hard to be more convincing. She is able to not only make us understand
that Black is Beautiful but that White is LeBlanc, Blanco, Belko, Weiss,
Bianchi, Byelov and Gwynne. Time allowed us but an appetizer, if I had
my way, Ms. White would return for an encore faster than you can say
Peadar O Tuathail.

REVIEWS OF BOOKS
GENEALOGICAL PERIODICAL ANNUAL INDEX
1975,
Laird C. Towle, editor
(Bowie, MD: The Yankee Bookman), 62 pages, $9.50.
The current issue, Volume 14, has over 4,000 indexed citations culled
from 117 genealogical and 39 surname or family association periodicals
which, as the author states, "Strives to encompass all English-language
genealogical periodicals." The listings are indexed as to surname, gene
alogical heading, topic or book review. In addition, heraldry and related
subjects are included. Each listing attempts to establish the true con
tent in addition to the title, providing the reader with something tan
gible to guide his research.
GENEALOGY VIA NEWSLETTER, by N. Burr Coryell (Santa Barbara, CA: P.I.P),
illustrated, 19 pages, $5.00.
The author has given a concise outline to anyone wishing to establish a
newsletter, one which seems to cover all facets. He begins with a 'why'
premise which he explains immediately:"Everyone has interesting stories"
and proceeds from that point, covering such things as choosing a 'name,'
frequency of publication and, most importantly, the editor, YOU! He then
covers the mechanics of obtaining mailing lists, types of articles, use
of photographs, layout, distribution, etc. Additionally, he touches on
financing(cost, if you prefer)and how to solicit contributions. However,
he glosses over the time spent in establishing and publishing a news
letter, maintaining that the fun, travel and acquaintances made justify
the effort expended. This publication is heartily recommended for anyone
considering publishing a newsletter —
be it genealogical or not.
PARISH MAPS OF THE COUNTIES OF ENGLAND AND WALES, compiled by The Insti
tute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, Northgate, Canterbury, Kent,
England (Logan, UT: The Everton Publishers,Inc.), illustrated, 46 pages,
$14.95.
The institution .compiling the maps included in this fine volume went to
great lengths to delineate the ancient parochial boundaries, indicate the
probate court jurisdiction effecting each area and list the commencement
dates for surviving parish registers in England and Wales.Through use of
this volume the researcher can untangle some of the problems confronting
him in establishing the ecclesiastical jurisdiction for the birthplaces
and residences of ancestors who were from
these sections of the
United
Kingdom. The only criticism centers on the scale used to fit maps to the
pages.
A reading glass of some sort is a necessary aid when the book is
used. A must for every genealogical society or library.
IT HAPPENED IN OLD SANTA BARBARA,
by Walker A. Tompkins (Santa Barbara,
CA: Santa Barbara National Bank), illustrated, 306 pages.
This edition, a collection of vignettes from the pen of Santa Barbara's
adopted son, was distributed by Santa Barbara National Bank without cost
30
for promotional reasons. For those interested in
particularly that of the Santa Barbara region,
formation presented in a most entertaining way.
unique is its treatment of the 'little people,'
most of the chronicles of Santa Barbara's
California history, and
here is a wealth of in
What makes this history
the ones overlooked in
romantic past.
The tales are
arranged in chronological order (with some overlap) beginning with the
discovery by Cabrillo in 1542, "
just half a century plus four days
from Columbus'
landfall in the New World"
of the shelling of Ellwood by a Japanese
to the World War II incident
submarine.
This is not a dry,
factual account but a warm narrative of the everyday happenings now pre
served for posterity by Mr. Tompkins' incisive study. Perhaps not of di
rect genealogical import, but a helpmate to research in the fashion of
more ambitious social histories.
CHEROKEE COUNTY HISTORY, by Mrs. Frank Ross Stewart (Birmingham, AL: The
Birmingham Printing Co.), 483 pages, $20.00.
This volume, Officials and Government, is the second of a series, judging
from the proposed chapters referred to. This enumerates past and present
officeholders and representatives of Cherokee, County, Alabama. Many of
the names are accompanied by biographical sketches.
Entries date from
1856 and may not be of a primarily genealogical character. The sketches,
however, include enough in the way of names of wives and children, dates,
service, fraternal organization activities and extracts from
newspapers
and official documents to provide a wealth of clues for searchers
look
ing for 'proof of an ancestor. There are two indexes, one for the preceeding volume, which is bound in, and a loose mimeographed index in a
pocket affixed to the book. The latter stands a good chance of becoming
lost. The index problem notwithstanding, the book is well produced and
covers much material in a direct manner. Strongly recommended for those
with an interest in this region.
A MIGRATION STUDY OF THE THIRTY-TWO STATES AND THE FOUR ORGANIZED TERRI
TORIES COMPRISING THE UNITED STATES IN 1850~j
compiled by Eleanor Myers
(Syracuse, NY: Central New York Genealogical Society, 1977),

The work divides the tabulations of the 1850 federal census into
part study of migration patterns.

migration has columns
under the heading of each state or territory listing: (1) The number of
native-born,within its confines or another of the states or territories.
(2) The foreign-born, listed by country of origin. (3) States and terri
tories receiving migrants from that state by name with accompanying fig
ures. All figures are in descending order. The second section is devoted
to a tabulation of foreign migrants by country and state or territory of
destination. Such a statistical study increases in importance with the
expertise of the researcher.Still, it has much to offer the less sophis
ticated. An example would be the ancestor living in Delaware in 1840 and
unaccounted for in 1850. Since 12,000 from Delaware are shown in Penn
sylvania, that would be the first choice to begin the search. Vermont is
the least likely, reflecting but a single soul traveling in that direc
tion. This publication continues the tradition of impressive projects by
CNYGS. A valuable addition to any library.
