The most effective system for the
automatic digitization of templates
Dime
Dime is the most immediate and cost effective format for the digitization of flat shapes.
One of the most frequent problems of those who operate Numerical Control machines for the cutting of
stone and glass materials is the large quantity of parts to be manufactured from shapes realized at the yard.
There are several different methods and devices to acquire the cutting profiles. Expensive and not very
practical Digital Drawing machines or optical systems mounted on a NC machine require a significant time for
the digitalisation and the management of the acquired profiles. Moreover, these devices are not very flexible,
since they require to bring the template to the workshop for digitizing.
The Dime system solves these problems in an efficient, flexible and absolutely inexpensive way.
The system consists of a standard digital camera, with a sufficient resolution, and the software Dime which
can be installed on any Personal Computer or laptop.
The only requirement is the presence on the photograph of the shape of four reference points taken on
the corners of a rectangle of known dimensions. These four points can be the edges of a Tile, of an A4
sheet or other. If 4 References of the type supplied in the Dime KIT are used as reference, the program is
able to automatically calculate their exact position on the photograph.
There are no constraints on the position of the camera for acquisition. Pictures can be freely taken from
different locations.
WHAT CAN BE MEASURED?
Dime can measure any profile as long as it is on the same plane of the four
Reference Marks or on a plane parallel to it.
The digitization needs are the most disparate. In addition to the profiles of
shapes it may be necessary to acquire the profile of a recess in a wall, the
edge of a swimming pool, some type of artistic gate to be reproduced or,
also, to acquire an entire interior of a home in order to obtain its plant.
The images show different types of Shapes acquired by templates in
cardboard or wood in full scale to those built in the yard for vaults or niches,
from existing kitchen tops to fixtures from door frames from which to derive
ornate drawings.

CAD FUNCTIONS AND OUTPUT
Dime is an option of the CAD program Logotag.
Once the vectorized profiles are obtained, these can be used as any
Logotag drawing. You can combine them with other drawings, modify
them to add title blocks or various indications, use the powerful function
of automatic dimensioning etc..
In particular, they can be exported to Taglio standard formats toward
the CAM software for machining operations dedicated to the various
technologies (Stone/marble, Glass, Sheet metal, Wood, Plastics, etc..).
Or be exported to standard CAD formats DXF, DWG (all versions), PLT (for
cutting plotters and Laser markers)
Dime is extremely simple to use
This does not mean that it is a trivial program!
On the contrary, it is an extremely sophisticated software
that uses very complex and sophisticated calculation
algorithms.

Z MANAGEMENT
ACCURACY
A powerful feature of the Dime program is the management of the "Z", that is
of the thickness of the materials. A typical application is the digitization of a
ladder with steps at different heights with respect to the reference plane of
the Reference Marks. In this case you can take a single picture and then derive
different profiles by entering the height of each elevation.
More simply, the management of the "Z" allows to correct the variations in the
thickness of the template with respect to the reference plane.
The accuracy of the system is linked to the resolution of the camera
and to the acquisition mode. The resolution of the machine is fully
exploited if it is positioned "above", i.e. perpendicular, to the template.
Very oblique shots reduce the resolution of the distant parts of the
template.
Also in this case Dime has a solution to greatly increase acquisition
accuracy. It is sufficient to indicate on the photograph some distances
between known points (in a completely free way). The software
processes this information and increases the accuracy of perspective
reconstruction.
This feature is indispensable when you want to measure very large
surfaces such as edges of pools or perimeter walls. In general,
whenever the 4 reference points are smaller than the shape to be
recorded you should use this function.

Recording of the template with the references to be carried out at the
yard or on a special stand at the company.
Transfer of the photograph to the computer
Loading of the photograph into Dime. In this phase, the program
automatically searches for the 4 reference points (if you have used the
supplied references).
Conversion to a plane of the photograph and calculation of the scale.
In this phase it is possible to enter any values of thickness of the
template. At the end you get a photograph with scale equal to one.
That is a pixel is equal to a millimetre.
Calculation of the profiles of the template and vectorization. There
are different strategies for the automatic calculation of the profiles of
the shape that are based on the characteristics of the image. If the
contrast between the template and the background is sharp, it is
possible to obtain sharp, accurate profiles.
Interactive editing of the vectorized profiles obtained. It is possible to
operate semi-automatically to optimize the number of elements
obtained by converting profiles into arcs or curves.
Special functions for: Template straightening along one of the
Cartesian axes, enforcement of parallelisms and orthogonality with
respect to a Segment taken as MASTER reference, search profiles that
can be traced back to circles or holes, enforcement of tangencies for
arcs and curves etc..
