1 Locations
The close connection of the study programmes at the University of Applied Sciences for
Health Professions in Upper Austria with the regional hospitals guarantees the successful
realisation of the acquired expertise in practice. Furthermore extensive cultural- and
recreational facilities, a wide variety of gastronomic – and various residential possibilities as
well as the best infrastructure offers the students an optimum study environment with high
living quality at all three locations of the University of Applied Sciences for Health
Professions in Upper Austria in Linz, Steyr and Wels.
1.1
LINZ
Linz is the capital of the region „Upper Austria“ and has approx. 200,000 inhabitants. The
river „Danube“ flows through the city. Characteristic for Linz is, that there is a fascinating
contrast between industry, culture and the natural environment. The city offers many leisure
activities and an interesting annual festival programm.

Steyr
Steyr with its approx. 42,000 inhabitants is situated very close to the national park
„Kalkalpen“. In the city two rivers meet called the „Steyr“ and the „Enns“ which creates a nice
atmosphere in the city. Steyr is also known as an economic hot spot, where companies like
„MAN“ or „BMW“ play an important role in the economy.

Wels
Wels is the second biggest city in „Upper Austria“ and has approx 52,000 inhabitants. The
city’s old town is an especially attractive place to be. Wels offers sports and cultural events,
such as the annual "International Puppet Festival", and numerous concerts staging national
and international stars. The City of Wels also hosts many trade fairs and exhibitions. The
most important ones are the "Welser Messe" (an international agricultural trade fair) and the
expoEnergy, the "Energiesparmesse" (a trade fair for energy efficiency and eco-energy).

Austrian Railway companies
In order to get from the airports to the cities Linz, Wels or Steyr you need to take a train
(except from airport Linz to Linz city centre). You can chose between two railway companies

OEBB (http://www.oebb.at/) – if you book online in advance, check out the
„SparSchiene“ tickets, which offer tickets for cheap prices.

WESTBAHN (https://westbahn.at/)– this railway only operates between the cities
Salzburg, Linz and Vienna.
If you don‘t have a special member card of the OEBB, it is cheaper to get the tickets from the
„Westbahn“. In any case, do compare the prices.
2.2.1
OEBB Vorteilscard
If you stay longer and would like to discover Austria by train, it is worth getting the OEBB
Vorteilscard. Anyone under 26 can get the OEBB „VORTEILScard <26“. It costs 19,90 Euros
and is valid for one year. A discount of up to 50% is granted for all ÖBB train tickets. To order
the card, you need a photo and your passport. You can request the card at a train station
ticket counter.

Public transportation in Linz, Wels, Steyr
If you stay for a longer time in Austria, you should check out the different ticket options you
have for the public transportation system:
Public transportation Linz
The “LINZ AG LINIEN” has different ticket offers. In addition to the classic MINI, MIDI, MAXI
and MEGA (annual) tickets, weekly and monthly tickets are available for your individual
mobility requirements. Children, pupils, students, trainees, employed persons, senior citizens
as well as owners of an Active Pass can get low-price tickets based on socially adjusted
fares and special discounts. MEGA tickets (annual network ticket) are available as
transferable tickets for adults, senior citizens and students. There is a Job Ticket available for
people commuting to and from their workplaces. For more information on individual products,

Public transportation Wels
„Linie Wels“ offers different tickets for the public transportation in Wels. For more information

Public transportation Steyr
„Stadtbetriebe Steyr GmbH“ has also a range on different options for public transportation
tickets. For more information on individual products, please click on „Ticket overview“.
Public transportation Upper Austria
An advantage of the OÖVV, which is the public transportation company for Upper Austria, is
the free choice of public transport and free alteration between the OÖVV transportation
companies along the selected route. Please consider the special arrangements in the central
zone (Linz, Wels, Steyr). For more information on individual products, please click on „Ticket

3 Visum, Embassies and Consulates
All students from foreign nationalities, who want to study or do a placement in Austria, need
a valid travel document and, if required, an additional entry or residence permit. Please make
sure that your travel document is valid for the whole duration of your stay.

„Aktivpass“

If you live as a student in Linz, you can get the so called „Aktiv Pass“ of the city Linz. It
enables you to get many reductions for public transportation, events, admission tickets and
much more.

In the cities the shops as a rule are open from

Monday to Friday 9-18,

on Saturdays 9-12, the main shops also till 17:00.
Some shops close for lunch (12-14).
Grocery shops often open before 8 o’clock and close at 18:30.
Every first Saturday of a month the shops in the cities are open until 17:00
In the big tourist centres some shops are also open on weekends.
Banks are usually open from Monday to Friday 8-12:30 and 13:30 to 15:00 (Thursdays till
17:00).

10 Erasmus Student Network Linz (ESN)
In Linz there is an ESN (Erasmus Student Network) contact point, if you want to meet other
international students and participate in events and parties. Please consider though that you
you can just participate in certain events, offered by the ESN network. Other services like
„mentoring“ can not be used, since additional services are mostly for students of the
„Johannes Kepler University“, where the contact point is based.
