As light and color unite, the stained-glass windows in churches throughout the Archdiocese reveal the images and mysteries of the Catholic faith and provide a remindful cascade of the “presence of God” and His love for His people. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am pleased to offer for your review the 2012 Annual Report of the Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma, Inc. It tells a story we can all be very proud of and I hope you will take time to go over it carefully. During this Year of Faith we are appreciative of the great gift of our Catholic faith which has been handed down through the ages from the time of the Apostles. Those Catholic leaders who came before us had tremendous foresight in establishing the Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma. It has been an effective instrument for strengthening and supporting the mission of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, including its parishes, schools and various institutions. It has born wonderful fruit in providing concrete assistance in virtually every dimension that touches upon the life of our beloved Church in Oklahoma. The practice of Christian stewardship begins with a sense of gratitude for all that God has given us. It moves us to a responsible cultivation and sharing of our God-given gifts so that God can be glorified in all things. Stewardship is a way of life. It is a spirituality that touches every aspect of our lives, including how we use and invest our financial resources. The Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma provides an effective avenue for exercising stewardship of our financial treasure. I thank you for both your interest and support of the Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma. I hope that you will help us strengthen its capacity for building up the Church and the vitality of our Catholic faith for generations to come. With the assurance of my prayers and best wishes, I am... Gratefully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Paul S. Coakley Archbishop of Oklahoma City Catholic Schools Opportunity Scholarships Awarded The Catholic Foundation administers the Opportunity Scholarship program for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. The program seeks donations for need-based scholarships awarded to Catholic students to attend Catholic schools within the Archdiocese. The primary purpose of the program is to allow as many students as possible to attend Catholic schools with tuition assistance to Catholic families with the greatest need. In 2012, the program awarded 39 scholarships to students from the funds it received in 2011. The Scholarships were distributed to benefit students at all 21 Catholic elementary and high schools in the Archdiocese. In 2011, the Oklahoma Legislature passed the Equal Opportunity Scholarship Act that provides for 50% income tax credits to be given for donations to a Scholarship-Granting Organization (limited to gifts of $2000 for married couples filing jointly or limited to gifts of $100,000 for corporations). The Catholic Schools Opportunity Scholarship Fund serves as a SGO and makes tax deductible contributions eligible for the state tax credit. Up to 75% of each donation can be earmarked to scholarships for a specific Catholic School. Archbishop Paul Coakley has expressed his support, “Why do we support Catholic Schools with enthusiasm? Forming children and youth in the Catholic faith is a vital task for the Church if we are going to keep faith with the missionary mandate that Jesus taught when he commissioned his Apostles saying, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Mt. 28:19-20). Handing on the Catholic faith to young people is an essential part of the Church’s mission to evangelize. Our Catholic schools, by virtue of the instruction, formation and witness that they provide, are a privileged place of evangelization. The reason we invest and sacrifice so much in support of our Catholic Schools is for the sake of this missionary mandate. It is for the sake of evangelization.” 2012 Highlights • Total Assets at the Catholic Foundation reached an all-time high of $47,999,059. The pooled investment performance for the fiscal year also had a 3.94% rate of return. • Catholic Schools Opportunity Scholarship Fund awarded 39 need-based scholarships for Catholic students to attend the 21 Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese • A Continuing Education Course on Estate Planning featuring Charles D. “Skip” Fox IV of Charlottesville, Virginia, was presented by the Catholic Foundation with over 140 attorneys, accountants, certified financial planners and trust officers in attendance. • Dottie Morris from All Saints School was awarded the 2012 Catholic Schools Educator of the Year. • Kim Boeckman from St. Peter Church, Woodward, was awarded the 2012 Religious Educator of the Year. • A Heart of the Parish Award was presented to Peggy Kitchens, DRE of St. Peter Church, Woodward, for her work with the 2012 Woodward tornado disaster. • Eleventh Annual Catholic Foundation Golf Classic presented by GMX Resources contributed over $75,000 to Catholic Schools and the Catholic Schools Endowment Fund. • 75 Catholic Students in the Archdiocese were awarded College Scholarships totaled over $90,000. • Educational Grants to Parishes and Schools in the Archdiocese totaled over $75,000. • The first Catholic Foundation sponsored Wills & Trusts Week was held at parishes in Oklahoma City, Enid, Yukon and Norman to promote planned giving to the Archdiocese. • Redesigned website at www.cfook.org continues to provide current and interesting Foundation facts and meaningful Planned Giving information to existing and potential Catholic Foundation donors. Named Funds Accomplish Goals Of Many Catholic Donors Upon his death two years ago, Reverend Charles Shettler left his estate of $58,000 to St. Francis of Assisi Church. Father Shettler had been in residence at the parish for over 25 years and everyone knew him and loved him. Seeking to set up an Endowment Fund to benefit the Church and Rosary School, and to honor the memory of Fr. Shettler, the Parish Council agreed to make application to the Robert Glenn Rapp Foundation for a $500,000 matching grant. The initial gift from Fr. Schettler would be used as a springboard to raise $500,000 from the parish, creating a new endowment of $1 million. The Foundation awarded the matching grant and, as they say, the rest is history. To date, the parish has raised in cash and pledges $560,000, easily qualifying for the maximum matching gift. Upon receipt of the remaining pledges, and full payment of the matching grant, the Endowment Fund, named in memory of Father Charles Shettler, will rise to a value in excess of $1,000,000. Carolyn (“Carol”) M. Brown, wife of Bill Brown and mother of eight, grandmother of twenty-eight, passed away in June of this year. Carol’s life work, as she so blissfully described it, was raising her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and likewise had a real devotion to all mothers and children. She never saw a baby she didn’t want to hold in her arms. She truly loved and was forever grateful for the gift of family. Along with Carol’s eight children, Bill set out to find a way that they could properly honor Carol’s memory. Given Carol’s affinity for family, they contacted Birth Choice of Oklahoma and asked how they could help that organization accomplish its mission in helping mothers and children throughout our community. Barbara Chishko, executive director of Birth Choice, indicated that the organization needed operating and program funds most of all. This fall the Brown Family established the Carol M. Brown Memorial Fund as an endowment and program fund for Birth Choice. This Fund will help meet the operating and program needs of Birth Choice, not only now, but for years to come. In 1922, at the age of 35, Joseph Danne penned his last will and testament on his farm near Kingfisher. His will was as enthusiastic as his devotion to experimentation and plant breeding. In the 8-page hand written document, no detail was left to chance – for Joseph Danne wanted to accomplish two things when he left this world: First he wanted no one to profit financially from his experimentation. And, secondly, he would bequest all of his worldly possessions to establish the Joseph Danne Foundation, with one intention – “to benefit mankind as much as possible, through the Roman Catholic Church.” Danne went on to develop a wheat strain he called “Triumph” – which at the time of his death was sowed on two of every three acres of Oklahoma wheat farms. Joseph Danne was as much a genius as he was a visionary. An eccentric living like a hermit, with little more than an elementary school education – Joseph Danne’s greatest “Triumph” was the impact his well planned legacy continues to have as an Endowment Fund at the Catholic Foundation. Named Funds in the form of Scholarship Funds, Memorial Funds or Donor Advised Funds can be created at the Catholic Foundation with a gift as little as $5000. Contact the Foundation office if you would like more information about creating a Named Fund. Tom and Judy Love believe in education and more importantly Catholic education. They know that it is important that Catholic Schools are affordable to all Catholic students. In 2011 they established the Edmund A. McCarthy Scholarship Fund for Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School students. This fund honored Judy’s brother, Ed McCarthy. They followed up this year with the establishment of the Tom & Judy Love Scholarship Fund to provide additional scholarships for McGuinness students. The first scholarships were awarded this fall to the high school students. Although Tom graduated high school from St. Gregory’s, Judy and their four children are all Bishop McGuiness Catholic High School graduates. Currently five of Tom and Judy’s grandchildren have graduated or currently attend McGuinness. As longtime supporters of many Catholic causes, Tom and Judy Love put their faith into action with these Endowed Scholarship Funds. In addition to the College Scholarship Program, the Educational Grants Program and the Catholic Schools Opportunity Scholarship program, the Foundation supports several other activities that deserve special note. All of these programs are aimed at raising awareness of the benefits of supporting the Catholic Foundation. In 2012, the Catholic Foundation sponsored the second annual Continuing Education Course on Estate Planning. This four-hour course qualified attendees for continuing education credit for the licensing organizations of attorneys, certified financial planners and accountants. Nationally prominent presenter, Mr. Charles D. Fox IV, an attorney from Charlottesville, VA, was the speaker and 142 persons attended the event. The Foundation benefits by exposing the attendees to the mission of the Foundation and charitable gift planning that could benefit their clients and customers. The presenting sponsor was Bank of Oklahoma. This year marked the 11th Annual Catholic Foundation Golf Classic. The Golf Classic was held on June 4, 2012, at Gaillardia Country Club. The presenting sponsor was GMX Resources. Over 200 players vied for trophies and prizes with the ultimate beneficiary the Catholic Schools Endowment Fund and the 21 individual Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese. Over $75,000 was netted by the event that included an awards dinner and auction. A full day of golf and fellowship was enjoyed by all. The Archbishop’s Trophy was won by a team of Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School golf team members. At the Fall Teachers In-service Day and the Catechetical Congress, the Catholic Foundation awarded the Catholic Schools Educator of the Year Award and the Religious Educator of the Year Award. Both awards are presented to teachers and catechists who demonstrate the best in their profession. This is not meant to be a popularity contest but rather the criteria are to honor educators who exhibit qualities, skills and leadership that have made a difference in the lives of others in their Parish or Catholic School. The Award Winners must exemplify the Catholic Education mission statement of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City: “The development of the whole person of the student, spiritually, intellectually, personally, socially and physically.” Dottie Morris was awarded the Catholic Schools Educator of the Year Award and Kim Boeckman was awarded the Religious Educator of the Year Award. Both awards were accompanied by a $5000 grant to the school or parish of the recipient. The Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma adopted a program in 2009 that would place monuments depicting the Ten Commandments at each Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the Archdiocese as a guide to all Catholic students in their faith formation. The Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma, Inc. has offered matching funds up to $2500 towards the purchase and installation of each monument at a school. The Foundation is seeking donations, grants and matching funds towards the $5000 total cost. The Foundation can order, have manufactured and install monuments at any of the School locations (including shipping) once the total cost of $5000 is raised. In 2012, the monument at St. Mary School in Lawton was blessed by the Archbishop at his annual visit. Monuments at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School and Sacred Heart School in El Reno have been ordered and the Monument at St. Philip Neri School has been installed this year. Endowment Funds at the Catholic Foundation continue to provide a steady source of revenues to many Catholic ministries throughout the Archdiocese year-in and year-out. Named Funds in the form of Scholarship Funds, Memorial Funds or Donor Advised Funds can be created at the Catholic Foundation with a gift as little as $5000. Earnings from a Named Fund can be directed to one or multiple causes of the donor’s choice. Whether it is to benefit your parish, your Catholic school, a Catholic ministry or any 501(c)(3) organization that follows the teachings of the Catholic faith, your gift or legacy gift that establishes an Endowment Fund will ensure the church or non-profit organization has the resource to continue for years to come. The Catholic Foundation provides a strong record of performance in income and asset growth of its investments. The Foundation also insures that its assets are invested using the United States Council of Catholic Bishops’ Socially Responsible Investment Guidelines. When you give, Give Catholic. Support the Catholic Foundation and its mission to “invest in the future of our faith.” INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF OUR FAITH The Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma, Inc. 7501 N.W. Expressway / P.O.
