Which have you joined so far? What projects and activities is you club involved in? Here is a list of some clubs or interest groups in your school. Let’s study them. Arts Club - this club develops the pupils’ sense of aesthetic and creative self expression using shapes , lines, color, texture and other art forms Sing-along Club - in this group, the talents of the pupils in singing and harmonizing with the other voice are honed to form a choir that will be tapped for various school activities Theater Club in this group basic skills are taught for the discovery of one’s talent in acting and simple play production. - Junior Journalist Club - opportunities are given to explore all possible avenues to express thoughts and feelings in different genres and to train for basic journalism Drum and Glockenspiel - the members of this group are taught the rudiments of playing the lyre and drum to be able to participate in and give life to some school activities. Student Government - this is an avenue for the pupils to heighten their civic consciousness and perform their duties as responsible citizens not only of our country but also of their immediate communities Munting Core - the pupils are given an opportunity to practice their missionary zeal through active participation in the liturgical services of the school. How do these club offerings help the pupils in their studies? _____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ Study these two sentences which say something about the clubs in your school. 1, This club teaches the pupils how to appreciate their own as well as the other nation’s cultural heritage. 2. The club develops the pupils’ sense of aesthetic and creative self-expression. Questions: What are the verbs in the sentences? What time do they indicate? The verbs are teaches and develops. They indicate present time. Verbs are also time words. They show action or state of being in relation to time. The tense of the verb denotes the time the action is done. The verb teaches and develops denote actions at the present time The present tense shows that an action takes place at the present time. Examples: Children participate in many activities. I write article for our school newspaper during my free time. The kid practices the latest dance steps regularly. We also use the simple present tense to show an action that is repeatedly done, to show an idea that is always true, and to indicate future time. Examples: Repeated Action: I go to school at 7:00 am everyday. Always true: Oxygen is needed by animals and humans. Future Idea: She performs later in the afternoon. The verbs should always agree with the subject in person and in number. Here are some guidelines to follow in making the verb agree with its subject. Rule #1. A singular subject requires a singular verb ( except I and you) Examples: A good pupil follows the school rules and regulations. He is a visitor in the library. Rule #2. Plural subjects and the singular pronouns I and you require a plural verb. Examples: The students stand at attention during the flag ceremony. I always pray . Rule #3. If the compound subjects are connected by either….or or by neither…nor, the verb agrees with the subject nearer to it. Examples: Either the girl or the boys attend the party. Neither the girls nor the boy receives the call. Rule #4. Compound singular subjects connected by and but referring to two different persons take a plural verb. Examples: My dog and I are friends. Peter and Andrew have gone to the concert. However, if the compound subjects connected by and refer to one or same person, a singular verb is required. Examples: Our group leader and class president is Jonathan. My cousin and best friend offers her help. Rule #5 A parenthetical expression or a phrase between the subject and the verb does not change the number of the verb. Examples: The teacher, together with the pupils, plans to go home. The students, along with their teacher, walk fast. Rule #6. Nouns plural in form but singular in meaning like news, measles, mathematics requires a singular verb. Examples: The news is little slanted. Measles is a contagious disease. Rule #7. A noun which is plural in form and meaning like eyeglasses, pants, scissors requires a plural verb. Examples: My eyeglasses need some repair. His pants are too big for him.
