Beginning with the Romantic period, this course continues with the pressing question about why we should study English Literature when there are so many other important things going on in the world. It asks about the continued impact English Literature has on the world, and what impact it has on our daily lives in Korea. Can it help us to get a job, for instance? Or can it help us to live better lives? Can it improve the quality of our lives? In what ways can we measure the effects, and in what respects are we unable to measure the effects of studying literature? Unlike the first course, however, much of the literature that we are studying in this one is much closer to the realities of our contemporary lives. The issues are a lot closer to us, the language is a lot more similar to today’s English, and even some of the people are still alive. The cultural forces shaping the emerging literature of each period are radically different as we move through the ages. We will look at how these differences are important to the study of literature, and we will develop skills appropriate for this kind of activity. As in the first course, among the things we will cover in this course are representative selections of English literature from a variety of critical perspectives in order to develop a greater understanding of the literature and its place in the world. We will learn about the elements that have come to characterize good writing, how writers use literary devices to produce such writing, and what literary forms have developed. The goals of this course follow those of the first part, and students will learn the following: 1] how to read, analyze, and talk about literary texts; 2] how the English literary canon formed and continues to form; 3] how these “old” texts are relevant today; and 4] how learning about the cultural contexts of literature can broaden our perspectives on life and people. Required materials 1] Norton Anthology of Literature volume II (8th edition). Ed. Abrams 2] Other materials will be distributed in class. 3] You are responsible for getting a copy of Frankenstein (either a digital or a hard copy . . . it’s up to you). Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on the basis of the following: Midterm……………. 35% Homework, Quizzes, and class tests……. 20% Final examination….. 35% Attendance…………. 10% Academic conduct: Attendance in this course is mandatory. If students do not attend, then they may do poorly or even fail (students who miss one-third or more of a course will not be able to pass the course). In addition, students should come to class on time. Students who are habitually late without good reason will lose marks. Finally, cheating of any kind will be severely punished: the University expects everyone to conduct their academic work with diligence, honesty, and sincerity. note rules:: Please take not e of these very important comments and rules 1.
