unnoticed.
Local 8782 would like to thank the Community and Businesses for their support through this
Lockout by U.S. Steel. Not only have our members been disadvantaged by a Nationalist American Company that is creating jobs in the U.S. to supply the Canadian market, but we know the
Community and Business’s have all been negatively affected and jobs and sales have been lost as
a result. The loss of these manufacturing jobs also has a ripple effect on other parts of the economy. One recent report estimated that 1. 9 jobs rely either directly or indirectly on each manufacturing job. This “multiplier effect” takes into account the decrease in jobs related to goods, services, and raw materials needed for manufacturing as well as the decrease in purchasing by former
manufacturing employees. That is why it is not just an issue of the Employees of U.S. Steel Lake
Erie Works but Canadians as a whole. We need to send this message to our Riding Representatives and other political parties to address the Foreign Investment Act and send a message that our
natural resources and jobs in Canada are not for sale. It burdens the tax base of the community
while putting additional strain on social programs.
So once again thanks for your support, our members will not forget. Here is a partial list of businesses and organizations that have donated so far.
In the future if you see our USW Logo in a window please give these businesses your patronage
for their support.
If we have missed anyone please accept our apologies and give us a reminder.
Thanks
Bill Ferguson President USW Local 8782
Mark Talbot Vice President USW Local 8782

Richard Milhouse Nixon was the first US President whose name contains all the
letters from the word "criminal". William Jefferson Clinton is the 2nd.
Appeal Update
We are still hoping to collect more witness stories about
events leading up to the lockout. So if you were laid
off , then recalled (when they were going to originally
shut down the Coke Ovens) then laid off, (when they
changed their minds) then recalled (when they changed
their minds AGAIN!!!!) then locked out, we need your
story to help substantiate the appeal. Also, if you were a
straight lock out and were doing work that would have only been done to “shut the plant down” we
can use that information as well. The more stories the better so please help us to give you the best
chance to win the appeal.
If you haven’t signed a waiver to be included in the representative appeal you need to sign ASAP!!
If your name is not included in the appeal you will not be entitled to any part of a settlement!!
