Year 4 Curriculum Map for Summer Term 1
Topic
Our new topic for this half term is The Vikings.
We will be learning about:






Viking Runes
Authentic Viking Clay tile designs
Viking evidence around Norfolk
What made the Viking invasion so
successful (including weapons and
ships)
Viking settlements
Viking leaders
Art/DT
We will be designing Viking shields, writing in
runes and making authentic clay tile designs.
History
We will be looking for evidence of Viking
settlement around Norfolk, understanding why
Viking invasion around Britain was so
successful including weaponry, shipbuilding
and incentives. We will also study Viking
leaders.
SMSC
We will investigate the role of women in
Viking society, making comparisons with their
role within British society.
Science
We will be learning about electrical circuitry
including Mains vs batteries, conductors and
switches.
Computing
English
We will be writing stories about The Vikings
focussing specifically on creating a believable
historical setting.
We will also be spending two weeks looking at and
writing play scripts based on a story about The
Vikings (The Worst of the Vikings by Margaret
McAllister).
Maths
We will be continuing to follow the National
Curriculum for maths. This half term we will be
covering adding and subtracting using formal written
methods, data handling, solving measurement
problems involving fractions, multiplication (formal
written methods), fractions and decimal
equivalences and mental multiplications and division
techniques.
We will continue to use Powerpoint to retell a
story focusing on animation, slide transition
and general aesthetics.
RE
Hinduism - The children are introduced to the
key components of the Hindu faith, including
how Hindu's worship in the home and at the
Mandir, Hindu gods and goddesses, Hindu
festivals such as Holi and Divali and how the
symbolism associated with the religion.
PE/Swimming
4G have 2 more swimming sessions 21 & 28
April, 4C start their swimming lessons on 5
May through to 7 July (9 sessions) .
