Feb 1910:43 AM 4 Background "The Red Guards" is an excerpt from Red Scarf Girl, a memoir by Ji‐li Jiang. A memoir is a book or story about real events from the author's life. Jiang grew up in Shanghai, China, in a wealthy family. In 1966, the Communist Chairman Mao Zedong began to change China's government and did not want anything left that represented "old" ideas, culture, customs and habits ‐‐ called "fourolds." The Red Guards were teenage students that were enlisted to help the government search for "fourolds" in houses. This went on for many years and destroyed millions of lives. The author tells her account of what happened to her and her family.
