Welcome from the President
Another year is upon us and once again it is time for our Annual Shows.
To our foreign visitors, a special welcome. During these trying economic times, we
know how expensive it has become to travel with dogs, so a special welcome to you.
We, the BKC, are still working with a group of volunteers to insure that the shows
continue. The Show Committee, this year, has done a tremendous job with several
new-comers to organize this show and I commend them all.
Good luck to all "Dogs" competing this year in events with the Dog Training Club, IDEA
and Conformation. I know all the "Dogs" will do well.
I would like to thank Somersfield Academy for allowing us, once again, to have our
shows and trials there. We could not ask for a better location.
I am also very happy to say that the four conformation shows have been nominated as
qualifiers for Crufts 2012. The Group Winners, Best Puppy in Show and Best Veteran
in Show will qualify. This is a first for our Bermuda Shows and it is with thanks to Kathy
Williams and Carole Havercroft and of course The Kennel Club.
So sorry I'm not here this year but I will be with you in spirit.
Please keep in mind the dates for our 2012 Show posted in the catalogue. Be sure to
tell all of your friends.
I hope to see all of you here once again next year.
Gwendolyn H. Dean

Only dogs entered in the Official Classes will be counted as being present for the
purpose of Championship ratings but additional points in accordance with the points
scale will be awarded for any Champions of Record subsequently defeated directly
or indirectly in Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex Competition. In computing the
Championship Points for a Breed Class, a dog that is disqualified or excused during
judging shall not be counted as being present at the Show. BKC rules Ch. 7, Sec. 2
Breed Classification
Dogs may be entered in any of the following classes for which they are eligible:
1. Puppy Class 6- 9 months: Champions in any country excluded.
2. Puppy Class 9-12 months: Champions in any country excluded.
3. Puppy Class 12-18 months: Champions in any country excluded. To be eligible
for Best Puppy Awards, puppies must be entered in the Puppy Classes. Puppies
entered in the Junior & Senior Puppy Classes must be within the age limit on the
day of the Show.
4. Novice Class: for dogs which have not, prior to the date of closing of entries, been
awarded one or more points toward their Bermuda Championship title. Champions
in any country excluded.

Kennel Club that the dog has earned the required number of points, under the
conditions prescribed in Ch. 7, Sec. 1, For the award of a Bermuda Championship.

7. Best of Breed Competition: Bermuda Champions of record only shall be entered
in this competition. Bermuda Champions that are over 7 years old and have been
spayed or neutered may be entered in Best of Breed Competition.
Transfer of entry to best of breed competition
Note: BKC rules Ch. 11, Sec. 10. Where, according to the records of its owner or handler,
a dog entered in a Show or a series of Shows has completed the Points Requirements
for its Championship after the closing of entries, but this has not yet been confirmed
by the Bermuda Kennel Club, the dog may, upon request to the Show Superintendent,
be transferred from the Official Classes entered, to Best Of Breed competition. Such
request must be made on a transfer of entry form provided by the Bermuda Kennel
Club, and must be filed with the Show Superintendent not less than one half hour prior
to the start of all judging at the subsequent Show(s) of the series. Should the owner
or handler be mistaken in computing the dog’s points and the dog compete in Best Of
Breed competition before it actually has the required points, any wins at that show(s)
will be automatically canceled. No dog may otherwise be transferred to another class.
Breed - Unofficial Classes

Group I: Sporting Dogs
Naturally active and alert, Sporting dogs make likeable, well-rounded companions.
Members of the Group include pointers, retrievers, setters and spaniels. Remarkable
for their instincts in water and woods, many of these breeds actively continue to participate in hunting and other field activities. Potential owners of Sporting dogs need to
realize that most require regular, invigorating exercise.

Group II: Hound Breeds
Most hounds share the common ancestral trait of being used for hunting. Some use
acute scenting powers to follow a trail. Others demonstrate a phenomenal gift of
stamina as they relentlessly run down quarry. Beyond this, however, generalizations
about hounds are hard to come by, since the Group encompasses quite a diverse lot.
There are Scottish Deerhounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Salukis and Beagles, among
others. Some hounds share the distinct ability to produce a unique sound known as
baying. You'd best sample this sound before you decide to get a hound of your own to
be sure it's your cup of tea.

Group III: Working Dogs
Dogs of the Working Group were bred to perform such jobs as guarding property, pulling sleds and performing water rescues. They have been invaluable assets to man
throughout the ages. The Doberman Pinscher, Siberian Husky and Great Dane are
included in this Group, to name just a few. Quick to learn, these intelligent, capable
animals make solid companions. Their considerable dimensions and strength alone,
however, make many working dogs unsuitable as pets for average families. And again,
by virtue of their size alone, these dogs must be properly trained.

Group IV: Terrier Breeds
People familiar with this Group invariably comment on the distinctive terrier personality.
These are feisty, energetic dogs whose sizes range from fairly small, as in the Norfolk,
Cairn or West Highland White Terrier, to the grand Airedale Terrier. Terriers typically
have little tolerance for other animals, including other dogs. Their ancestors were bred
to hunt and kill vermin. Many continue to project the attitude that they're always eager
for a spirited argument. Most terriers have wiry coats that require special grooming
known as stripping in order to maintain a characteristic appearance. In general, they
make engaging pets, but require owners with the determination to match their dogs'
lively characters.

Group V: Toy Dogs
The diminutive size and winsome expressions of Toy dogs illustrate the main function
of this Group: to embody sheer delight. Don't let their tiny stature fool you, though,
many Toys are tough as nails. If you haven't yet experienced the barking of an angry
Chihuahua, for example, well, just wait. Toy dogs will always be popular with city dwellers and people without much living space. They make ideal apartment dogs and terrific
lap warmers on nippy nights. (Incidentally, small breeds may be found in every Group,
not just the Toy Group. We advise everyone to seriously consider getting a small breed,
when appropriate, if for no other reason than to minimize some of the problems inherent in canines such as shedding, creating messes and cost of care. And training aside,
it's still easier to control a ten-pound dog than it is one ten times that size.)

Group VI: Non-Sporting Breeds
Non-sporting dogs are a diverse group. Here are sturdy animals with as different
personalities and appearances as the Chow Chow, Dalmatian, French Bulldog, and
Keeshond. Talk about differences in size, coat, and visage! Some, like the Schipperke
and Tibetan Spaniel are uncommon sights in the average neighborhood. Others,
however, like the Poodle and Lhasa Apso, have quite a large following. The breeds in
the Non-Sporting Group are a varied collection in terms of size, coat, personality and
overall appearance.

Group VII: Herding Dogs
The Herding Group, created in 1983, is the newest AKC classification; its members
were formerly members of the Working Group. All breeds share the fabulous ability
to control the movement of other animals. A remarkable example is the low-set Corgi,
perhaps one foot tall at the shoulders, that can drive a herd of cows many times its size
to pasture by leaping and nipping at their heels. The vast majority of Herding dogs,
as household pets, never cross paths with a farm animal. Nevertheless, pure instinct
prompts many of these dogs to gently herd their owners, especially the children of
the family. In general, these intelligent dogs make excellent companions and respond
beautifully to training exercises

OCTOBER 2011 - BERMUDA KENNEL CLUB
Junior Showmanship
Competition
1. NOVICE: for juniors who are at least 7 years old and under 17 on the day of the
show and who, at the time entries close, have not won 3 first place awards in a novice
junior showmanship class at shows held under BKC rules in competition with one or
more junior handlers.
2. OPEN: for juniors who are least 7 years old and under 17 on the day of the Show
and who have won at least 3 first place awards in a Novice Junior Showmanship Class
at Shows held under the bkc rules. The winner of the Novice Class automatically
becomes eligible to enter and compete in the Open Class at the same Show provided,
that the win is his third first place award in Novice and that there are one or more additional Junior Handlers in the Open Class.
If, after the close of entries, a Junior Handler wishes to substitute another otherwise
eligible dog in the Junior Showmanship Class for which he is entered the Junior
Handler may do so provided he supplies the Superintendent or Show Secretary with
the required identifying information on the dog at least one half hour prior to the start
of judging of the class in which the Junior Handler is to compete. The substitute dog
must be entered in one of the Breed or Obedience Classes or any other Junior Showmanship Class at the Show and the Junior Handler must wear an armband with the
substitute dog’s catalogue number.
Junior Showmanship Trophy List
Rosettes will be awarded each day for the best novice junior handler and the best open
