A second chance at life for friendless animals since 1976 HALAH HERALD YEAR END 2016 The Griffin Goodfellows, a group of students from Arlington Classics Academy, were at long last able to visit The Haven on a sunny October afternoon. Their visit had to be postponed a few times the previous school year. Freezing temps and rain had interfered with prior plans, so their patience was rewarded with a perfect day this time! The Griffins (along with parents) enjoyed holding some fluffy pups, had a chance to play with our young Catahoula / Terrier mixes, and visited various other dogs. There were some real dog lovers in this group as shown below. Just three weeks later, the school donated 15 bales of hay left over from their fitness week obstacle course. Some Goodfellows parents loaded up trucks to make a much appreciated, special delivery of hay bales to The Haven just in time for the first cold snap. Perfect timing for keeping the HALAH hounds warm. The Goodfellows had BONNIE another chance to visit with the dogs they had just met during their earlier trip. PUPPIES JESSE Plum Creek Elementary in Joshua is still organizing their monthly P J for Pooches day to support HALAH. The participants make a donation to wear pajamas to school one day a month and Home At Last’s pooches benefit from those donations. Consider this fun way to engage your school or work place using pajamas, jeans, or even ugly Christmas sweaters while collecting donations for HALAH. “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Mahatma Gandhi HALAH P O BOX 189 GODLEY, TEXAS 76044 (817) 389-3813 WWW.HALAH.ORG Another HAPPY HALAH Tale A big beautiful, blonde German Shepherd with a magnificent smile arrived at HALAH in December of 2012. She was purchased as a pet for the children of a Dairy Farm, but they quickly tired of caring for her. A hired hand of the Dairy was told to immediately take the dog to the Pound and get rid of her. He had previously volunteered at HALAH. Knowing she was a sweet girl who deserved a second chance at life; he was very happy we had a place for her. She arrived painfully thin, but very sweet. Surprisingly less than a week after her arrival, she had 6 cute puppies. She was given the name Pandora. Her pups thrived (with supplemental food) and all found homes as soon as they were old enough. Pandora was a wonderful momma who welcomed all visitors, even with her new born pups. Unfortunately she never liked other dogs. For almost four years Pandora’s yard was the favorite stopping place at The Haven for all visitors, especially youngsters. She always enjoyed children. Pandora was a water lover. Her favorite spot was sitting in her water tub, where she had a clear view and could supervise most of HALAH’s activities. For years all families who were interested in adopting Pandora had other small pets, so her animosity for other dogs prevented her from finding a home. FINALLY she caught the attention of a man with no other pets. He works mainly from home which was an added bonus! They met and he fell in love with her sweet personality. Pandora quickly adjusted to her forever home and now enjoys going on walks visiting with all the neighborhood children daily. Her adoption left a big hole at The Haven. All previous visitors notice her absence and miss her huge smile. Pandora’s adoption energized and filled us with optimism for other longtime residents. Everyone is thrilled for her to be living the good life and receiving the love she deserves. We hope other extended stay citizens of The Haven will experience her same good fortune and soon find their own personal homes. HALAH has several loving dogs who would make wonderful companions in a ONE dog home. Cindy and Clown are such dogs. Each of them hopes to be the next long term HALAH occupant to be adopted into a loving home of their own. Our second Saturday adoption events are going well at Burleson PetSmart. Send your friends to adopt a HALAH hound or come to visit CINDY us there. It is always a significant boost when high profile individuals adopt from a shelter or rescue organization, as former President and Laura Bush, recently did. It is nice they are sharing the joy their rescue has brought to their life, while encouraging others to adopt. Visit our website or follow us on Facebook for photos and information about our adoptable dogs.
