CVC words have a consonant-vowel-consonant
pattern.
Example words:
bat, lip, mop

Digraphs are two letters that go together that
make a new sound.
ch, sh, th, wh, ck
Example words:
chip, shot, with, whip, luck

When a f, l, s, or sometimes z comes after a
short vowel at the end of a word, it needs a
bonus letter.
Example words:
puff, hill, mass, buzz

When the letters all are in a word, the sounds are
so close together that they only get 1 tap.
Example words:
mall, ball

When the letters am are in a word, the sounds
are so close together that they only get 1 tap.

When the letters an are in a word, the sounds are

When the suffix –s gets added to the end of the
word it makes the word plural, meaning more than
1.
When s is a suffix it can make the sound /s/
like in shops or /z/ like in bugs.
