Après Hobbyhorse, an additional hour from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, is available for an additional charge. Children who stay for Après Hobbyhorse have the opportunity to do homework, participate in quiet games, listen to a story, or work on a computer. Hobbyhorse is open to Nightingale-Bamford students in Classes K–IV and St. Bernard’s students in Classes K–III. Students may enroll on a prorated basis after the sessions have begun, space and other conditions permitting. The fall session will begin on September 28 and end on December 17. The Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday workshops will meet for 11 sessions (additional hour $165), the Tuesday workshops will meet for 9 sessions (additional hour $135), and the Friday workshops will meet for 10 sessions (additional hour $150). Enrollment is limited, and we urge you to register promptly. TUITION Fees include all supplies and must be paid in full upon registration. No refunds will be granted after the first scheduled workshop. Please make all checks payable to the Nightingale-Bamford School. Financial aid is available. SATURDAY SPORTS CLUB Saturday Sports Club will be available at St. Bernard’s for boys and girls in Classes K–VIII beginning December 5. Skill development, fair play, sportsmanship, and team spirit will be emphasized. No advance registration is necessary; children who wish to participate should arrive in sneakers any Saturday at St. Bernard’s (4 East 98th Street) and enter through the black door closest to Fifth Avenue. Students staying for the full day must bring lunch. Do you have a journal or a sketchbook? How about poetry? Have you ever written an article just for fun? This fall, bring your pencils and imagination for exploring many types of creative writing. We will work on stories, poems, articles, and more. Tennis Ron Prosper Classes K–IV (limited to 15) 3:15–5:15 p.m. Tuition: $825 Students will have one hour of tennis at either the Central Park courts or the St. Bernard’s gym. Mr. Prosper will provide tennis instruction following the USTA short-court curriculum for younger players. The children will be picked up at Nightingale and brought back to school for a 5:15 p.m. dismissal. TUESDAYS September 29 October 6, 20, 27 November 10, 17 December 1, 8, 15 Beading and Beyond Marica Mayuzumi Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $595 Create your own jewelry pieces! Dazzle your friends and family with your unique and artistic ideas. Students will be guided as they design and choose colorful beads to make their very own works of art. So, let’s bead away! Homework Study Hai Dan Fan Classes III–V (limited to 15) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $495 This is a time to complete your homework before going home. Ms. Fan will be available to answer any questions you might have. What a great a way to begin the evening! Fall Feast Joel Hinds-Ortiz Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $595 Young chefs, tempt your taste buds with fresh fall ingredients. Students will practice mixing and measuring techniques while learning to use various kitchen tools. Turkey, pumpkins, apples, and more—what a delicious way to celebrate the season! Inline Skating/Skateboarding Joel Rappelfeld Classes K–IV (minimum of 5) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $495 Join our fantastic coaches for afterschool rolling in the park. We are offering both inline skating and skateboarding to give your child a great, mixed experience on wheels. Each week students will learn a new skill, from basic to advanced skating techniques. Get comfortable with balance, stopping, and turns, and even learn some cool dance moves and tricks that will impress yourself and others. This mixed class is designed so your child can stay with one program for the season or switch midseason. You must have your own skates and/or board; helmet; and wrist, knee, and elbow pads to participate. Making Memories: A Scrapbooking Journey Amanda Espy Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $495 Do you have pictures of a special time or event? Why not take those pictures and create a scrapbooking album? Students will use different techniques and materials to decorate their very own photo albums. Please make sure to bring to the first class at least five different photographs from that special occasion or moment! Super Silly Science Kelly Qualman Classes K–II (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $495 Using the STEM curriculum as a jumping-off point, we will build and test a working parachute, construct a bridge, design a robot arm that can pick up a ball, engineer a filter that purifies water, and complete other projects. Messes will be made and projects will be built both individually and in pairs. wednesDAYS September 30 October 7, 14, 21, 28 November 4, 11, 18 December 2, 9, 16 Chess Shernaz Kennedy Classes K–V (limited to 15) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $660 Come join this fun workshop— no previous knowledge of chess is necessary! From the beginning you will learn the moves, principles, strategies, and tactics of casual chess play and serious competition. This workshop extends beyond the activity to underscore the art of logical reasoning more broadly. Students emerging from this workshop will become good problem solvers and naturally develop a tough-minded confidence that will stay with them throughout their lives. Gaga Eileen Saguirer and Jeanne Finnigan-John Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $595 Gaga is a fast-paced, action-packed dodgeball game from Israel. Players use their hands to bat the ball and bounce it off the walls as they try to hit other players below the knees. The object of the game is to be the last one standing. Gaga is lots of fun and a great way to burn off energy. Kids in Sports: Lacrosse Kids in Sports Classes K–IV (limited to 15) 3:15–5:15 p.m. Tuition: $715 The fastest game on two feet comes to Nightingale! We will be cradling, passing, and shooting our way through the fall season! Techniques and activities include learning the fundamentals of lacrosse, as well as cooperative skills that will take students beyond the game and the field. Each child must have his or her own stick, goggles, and mouth guard. Students will be picked up from Nightingale after school and, depending on weather, travel to Central Park or to an indoor location in Manhattan. They will return to school in time for a 5:15 p.m. dismissal. Theater Builders Alexis Lambright Classes K–V (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $660 Experience the process of creating your own unique show from scratch! Children will be guided through a series of improvisational games to develop a story. They will then write a script with lyrics set to music and rehearse their creation. Expand Your Mind Jennifer McFeely and Lisa Levine Classes K–IV (limited to 18) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $595 In this class students will experiment with some easy relaxation and meditation activities. We’ll learn guided imagery, create our own meditations, play with crafts, and work on some fun yoga poses! NOTE TO PARENTS: Research shows us that simple mindfulness practices enhance focus, learning, resilience, and sleep while reducing the impact of stress! Learning these easy practices early can support your daughter’s wellbeing throughout her childhood. October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 November 5, 12, 19 December 3, 10, 17 Imagination with iPads Claire Anderson Classes K–II (limited to 10) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $595 Use your innovation skills to create stories, puppet shows, iBooks, and math games on the iPad. This class will introduce you to apps such as Adobe Voice, Book Creator, PuppetPals, ChatterPix, and Tiny Tap. iPads will be provided by Nightingale. Creative Fun with Photoshop Caroline Hastie Classes II–V (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $595 In this class we will use Photoshop image-editing software and scanning tools as we learn to enhance and manipulate digital photographs. We will also experiment with creating images without a camera. A digital camera is useful (be sure to bring the cable too), but not required. Those who have participated in this workshop previously will experiment with more advanced techniques. Kids in Sports: Soccer Kids in Sports Classes K–IV (limited to 15) 3:15–5:15 p.m. Tuition: $715 The most popular sport in the world comes to Nightingale. We will be dribbling, passing, and shooting our way through the fall season! Techniques and activities include learning the fundamentals of soccer, as well as cooperative skills that will take students beyond the game and the field. The Mystery of Magic Joel Rappelfeld Classes K–IV (minimum of 5) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $595 Be part of the mystical and exciting world of magic. Every week our magic gurus will introduce the apprentice magicians to a few different tricks. They will be able to impress their friends and family with various card tricks, disappearing coins, sleight of hand, and more. We supply the materials and expertise—you bring your enthusiasm. friDAYS October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 November 6, 13, 20 December 4, 11 Color Creations Jo-Anna Roach Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 2:20–4:00 p.m. Tuition: $550 Come stretch your abstract imagination! Learn how to make colors lighter, darker, and more brilliant as we draw and create pictures of our favorite people, places, and things. The fall season, including Halloween and Thanksgiving, will influence our subjects as we fill our canvasses with vivid color! Take Me to the Water Glenn Pepper Classes K–V (minimum of 5) 2:20–4:00 p.m. Tuition: $600 Swimmers will be grouped according to their abilities. The instructor-tostudent ratio is 1:3. The focus of the program is on instructional swimming, with time allotted for water activities. The children will be transported to the Monterey, located at 175 East 96th Street, and will be dismissed from there at 4:00 p.m. STAFF Naomi Hayashi is the director of Hobbyhorse and has been a member of the Nightingale faculty for nine years. She is a graduate of New York University. Her interests include running, yoga, theater, travel, and spending time with her baby girl. Claire Anderson is a Nightingale alumna and Class IV homeroom teacher. She is a graduate of Kenyon College and received her MS from Bank Street College of Education. She enjoys traveling as well as exploring all types of technology. Amanda Stetson Espy grew up in New York City and is a Nightingale alumna. She received her BA from George Washington University and her master’s in early childhood education from New York University. In her free time, Amanda enjoys working on art projects with her daughter. Hai Dan Fan has been a member of the Nightingale faculty for 11 years. She is a graduate of Binghamton University and a Class II homeroom teacher. In her spare time she enjoys traveling abroad, ice skating, and knitting. Jeanne Finnigan-John holds a BS in dance/community health education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has taught at Nightingale for more than 20 years. She teaches dance to students K–XII and runs the varsity dance program. Caroline Hastie is the Middle and Upper School photography teacher at Nightingale and has been at the school for 14 years. She received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MFA from Hunter College. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, and her work has been shown throughout the Northeast and in Europe. Joel Hinds-Ortiz is the head chef at Nightingale. Prior to joining our kitchen, he worked at St. David’s, Argentelle Catering, and Special Events and Entertaining Ideas Catering. He enjoys teaching all his recipes to the children. Shernaz Kennedy is one of America’s leading chess teachers. She instills in students the means to unlock the secret of the world’s greatest game. In 1987 she was ranked number two on the US Olympiad Team. She has started chess programs at Browning, Buckley, Trinity, Dwight, and All Souls Church. She even helped World Champion Bobby Fischer in his successful comeback match in 1992. Kids in Sports is the renowned program inspired and operated by Michael Strutt and Kenny Colon, both of whom have been working with children in NYC and Fairfield County for over a decade. Kids in Sports teaches basketball, baseball, soccer, floor hockey, volleyball, and football to children ages 12 months to 12 years. Alexis Lambright is a New York City-based performer and comedy writer. She has studied improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, as well as the Magnet Theater. She can also be seen entertaining scores of children as a performer with the Story Pirates! Lisa Levine has worked in clinical and school nursing for over 30 years and is thrilled to be returning to Nightingale as the school nurse. She has taught wellness classes at Adelphi University, and she also helps to develop educational programs for adults and high school students as part of her work as vice president of the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition. Marica Mayuzumi received her BA and MA in teaching from Simmons College in Boston and works as a Kindergarten teacher at Nightingale. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors and working on craft projects. Jennifer McFeely is the Director of Counseling at Nightingale. She received her BA from Kirkland College and her MSW from Rutgers University. Glenn Pepper, a graduate of the New York Institute of Technology, has been involved with many swimming activities. He was the aquatic director of the Nassau County Parks Department and is currently the director of Swim Time, Inc. and Take Me to the Water. Ron Prosper is a member of the physical education department at St. Bernard’s, where he has directed the tennis program for over 20 years. He and his experienced staff strive for interest, action, and enthusiasm when learning and playing tennis. Kelly Qualman is a Class IV homeroom teacher at Nightingale. She is a graduate of Emerson College and Harvard University. In her free time she enjoys baking, writing, and riding her bike in Brooklyn. Joel Rappelfeld operates Kids on Wheels and Kids Action Sports. His teachers have been enjoying working with children and teaching skating, sports, and a variety of creative classes for over two decades. Jo-Anna Roach has taught Chinese and Japanese brush painting and calligraphy to Classes I and III at Nightingale for the past 14 years. An Acadia University graduate, she has lived, studied, traveled, and taught throughout Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and India. Eileen Saguirer is a physical education teacher at Nightingale. She received her BS in kinesiology from Penn State University and her MA from Adelphi University. Eileen enjoys participating in many sports, especially volleyball and karate. She has studied Seido Karate for over 25 years and holds a fifthdegree black belt. Isabel Slokar teaches Class III at Nightingale, where she was also a student many years ago. She is passionate about reading and writing and is very excited to explore the creative aspects of writing with Lower School students this fall.
