INFORMATION BROCHURE

How can I get into the program?
If you are about to or have just completed an
AOD withdrawal program, talk to your GP,
counsellor or support worker and tell them
that you are interested in participating in Youth
Catalyst. If you are not currently engaged with
Alcohol and Other Drug services, give YoDAA a
call on 1800 458 685, who can direct you to your
nearest Alcohol and Other Drug Intake Service.
An intake worker will discuss your circumstances
and support needs. If appropriate, you will be
invited to complete an assessment and indicate

Is Catalyst right for you?
Catalyst overview
What’s involved?
This brochure aims to provide you with more
information about the Youth Catalyst Program.
Here are some things to consider when
deciding if Youth Catalyst is right for you:
Catalyst is a structured non-residential rehabilitation
program incorporating a range of activities, including
group work, individual counselling, recreation and
social activities. The aim is to help young people
develop coping skills and maintain motivation to
change their substance use.
The core components of the program utilise
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Motivational
Enhancement Therapy, harm reduction and relapse
prevention strategies to help participants identify
and change unhelpful thinking, deal with high risk
situations, and manage unhelpful or negative mood
states, such as frustration, depression and anxiety.
§§ Do you want to cut down or give up
alcohol or other drugs (AOD)?
The program operates from Monday to Friday and is
delivered over six weeks.
§§ Are you willing to receive support, or
if your AOD use requires, a withdrawal
program prior to commencing Catalyst?
What supports are available?
§§ Would you be able to commit to a sixweek non-residential program which
operates mostly between 9:30 a.m.
and 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday?
§§ Are you willing to commit to not using
substances for the duration of the program?
§§ Would you have stable accommodation
during the program?
§§ Are you able to get to the program and
home again? We can provide you with public
transport tickets while you are attending.
§§ Do you have basic literacy in English?
§§ Are you between 16-20 years of
age and live in Victoria?
If you answered “yes” to all these questions,
then Youth Catalyst may be right for you.
The program has been proven to help people
make and maintain positive changes in their
health, relationships and substance use.
Youth Catalyst is FREE for all participants.
Youth Catalyst provides intensive support following
withdrawal. Whether your ultimate goal is to use
in moderation or to give up completely, a period of
abstinence of at least 30 days will help make it easier
for you to achieve your goals.
Qualified and friendly staff will assist you to maintain
the motivation to change, as well as helping you
learn specific skills and strategies to maintain
abstinence or to work toward using substances in
moderation at a future date.
If you are having mental health issues, Catalyst may
still work for you but it is important for us to find
out what additional supports you might require to
successfully participate in Catalyst.
How do we know Catalyst works?
Although this is a new program for young people,
ReGen has had success delivering similar programs
for people over the age of 18. We have worked
together with young people to adapt the Youth
Catalyst model from the adult program, but will
continue to review and redevelop the model in
response to participant feedback.
The Catalyst Programs are supported by the latest
research and have been independently evaluated.
The original Catalyst Program won the 2011 National
Drug and Alcohol Awards for Excellence in Treatment
and Support.
This core content is supported by optional
sessions, which address other needs and
also helps participants rediscover life
affirming and pleasurable activities.
These sessions include: family relationships,
nutrition, art therapy, financial management,
exercise, relaxation and employment support.
