Friday 16th November 2012 No. 550 Governing Body Report to Parents/FOSTAS AGM Tuesday 20th November Although this meeting has long since ceased to be a statutory requirement, St Anthony’s continues to invite parents to come along to meet your Governing Body once a year and share a glass of wine or two after the meeting. Governors’ meeting with parents follows FOSTAS’ Annual General Meeting which begins at 7.00p.m. Should you have a question for Governors to answer, please e mail the school address or, leave your question in an envelope at the school office. Maths Challenge Many congratulations to Year children Gabriel, Hamish, Luke and Roberta and who came first (out of ten) in an area mathematics Challenge and now enter the Regional decider next Tuesday. The prize? A place in the national final in Cambridge!!!!! There are a number of ‘surplus to requirements’ office chairs adjacent to the conservatory. If you would like to take one, please help yourself. There’s no charge! Everyone present and on time every day last week St Clare (again!!!) Dear Children I had a lovely surprise when the postman brought me your package of letters. I sat down and read them all, and I must say, I thought they were very well written. You have great handwriting and very good spelling. I was most impressed. I’m very glad that you enjoyed reading The Garbage King. It’s a book that means a lot to me because of the boys in Addis Ababa who told me all about their lives. Some of you asked me if I was going to write a sequel. Sorry, but I don’t think I could bring Mamo and his gang back to life again in the same way. After I wrote the Garbage King, I went to Pakistan, and met some other boys who told me about their experiences. They had been sent to Dubai to be camel jockeys. They had to ride fast racing camels and face many dangers. The book I wrote about them is called Lost Riders, and if you enjoyed The Garbage King, you might enjoy reading that one too. Good Luck with your reading everyone. All the best. Elizabeth Laird. Last Week’s Challenge was a bit of a brain teaser asking ‘What letter of the alphabet is the one which comes 9 letters before the letter which comes 3 letters after the first letter to occur 4 times in this sentence?’ The solution to the Challenge is ‘n’ - why? You solve this by working backwards through the puzzle: the first letter to occur four times is ‘t’, three letters after that is w, and nine letters before that is ‘n’! Well done Elizabeth (St John), who is this week’s winner. How many triangles and quadrilaterals can you see in this picture. Look very carefully, it’s tricky and there are probably many more than you think. Attendance & Punctuality WELL Done Miss Checker and the Children of St Thomas who enjoyed reading The Garbage King so much that they wrote to the author, Elizabeth Laird, and received a response!
