Board games, puzzles, cards, etc., were available to add to the hour’s enjoyment. Note that there will be no events scheduled during the months of July and August in order to accommodate the summer playground program. JOIN THE KENHORST FIT CLUB! Join us at the Community Center Thursday Evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Beginning on Thursday, June 18th we will be conducting a 30 minute exercise program with the class starting at 7:00. Registration and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Just bring a towel and water and be ready to have some fun! Yoga or exercise mats are optional. Classes are open to any Kenhorst resident 18 years of age and over. If anyone under the age of 18 wishes to participate they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who must be present for the entire time the minor is in attendance. All exercise levels are welcome. To better organize seating and plan refreshments, remember to contact the Borough staff if you plan to attend. 2015 SUMMER PLAYGROUND PROGRAM Monday, June 15th to Friday, August 7th 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Register children and grandchildren of Kenhorst Borough residents – 6 to 12 years of age at the time of registration. Valid means of age verification is required to register. Kenhorst Seniors Social Hour – The Borough has created a social hour for Kenhorst senior and retired residents. On Tuesday, May 5th attendees met at the Community Center located in the Kenhorst Park from 10 to 11 a.m. for a pleasant hour of social time and light refreshments. Kenhorst resident, Carolyn Gunster, made delicious coffee cakes. Borough Manager, Jeri Diesinger, led discussions on topics including the new CodeRED Alert system, Police Protection and Property Maintenance. nd During the social hour on Tuesday, June 2 some of the discussion focused on topics of interest and activities attendees would like to see 2015 SUMMER Newsletter Registration Fee – $100 for the first child and $30 for each additional child in the same family Non-Resident Applicants – Accepting applications from the Non-Resident Waiting List on a first come, first served basis if the 60 child maximum is not reached by opening day. FROM THE MANAGER’S DESK – By Jeri L. Diesinger Playground – On Monday, June 15th we kick off the 2015 Summer Playground session with two returning leaders and some new faces. A warm “welcome back” to Rachel Marra and Nick Schaeffer. Joining Rachel and Nick are Supervisory Leader Madison Garrigan, Stephanie Swavely, Carly Barbour and Jeff Crosby. The leaders have already met to begin planning the many enjoyable activities and trips for this year’s playground program participants. We are confident that these fine young people will create a fun yet safe summer playground program. Public Works – Welcome to James (Jesse) Schweitzer to our Borough family. Jesse joined us in April to assist Dwayne Hart in the Public Works Department. Jesse has a strong background in landscaping. You will notice some of Jesse’s recent handiwork around the Community Center and Borough Hall. CodeRED Emergency Notification System – On Monday, May 4th the CodeRED Emergency Notification System conducted a test call to all residents and businesses located within the Borough with a message from our Mayor, Nick Hatzas. CodeRED is a high-speed emergency notification system operated in all 50 states and Canada that can send out important messages to thousands of residents in minutes. If you did not receive this call, please visit the Kenhorst website to enter your information – just click on the CodeRED icon. If you do not have internet access, please contact a friend or family member to help add your contact information to the emergency database. The technology has been in existence since about 1998 with the programs continually expanding as new technologies become 2015 SUMMER Newsletter The Borough plans to utilize this technology to notify our residents and businesses of not only emergency situations and weather alerts that may be required, but notifications of a more general nature as well. 2016-2018 Police Contract – On May 7th Borough Council voted to execute a new threeyear contract with the Reading Police Department. Next year, the Borough will pay $448,384 which is the same amount paid this year. We will pay $452,868 in 2017 and $461,925 in 2018. These amounts calculate to between $156 and $160 per resident per year for round the clock police protection. 2015 Street Paving Program – At their May 7th meeting Council authorized the following 2015 street repairs. Streets will be milled and repaved and are prioritized depending on final bid totals: The 1300 block of Brooke Boulevard High Boulevard from Commonwealth Boulevard to the Bridge High Boulevard from Liberty Avenue to Hancock Boulevard Haig Boulevard from New Holland Road to Hancock Boulevard McCarthy Engineering Associates, the Borough’s Engineer, will assist with preparing the bid specifications according to PennDOT regulations. Paving will be completed this fall. Kenhorst Zoning Hearing Board News – The Kenhorst Zoning Hearing Board met on May 11th to review the plans of Dr. Greg Aulenbach to add a pet photography studio in the basement of his 1439 New Holland Road dental practice. The plan was approved. Kenhorst Blvd., Kenhorst, PA 19607 Email - [email protected], Website - www.co.berks.pa.us/muni/kenhorst Kenhorst Planning Commission News – On May 12th the Kenhorst Planning Commission took action to recommend that Council approve the Final Land Development Plan of L2i Properties, LLC for a six-unit apartment building to be constructed in the 1600 block of New Holland Road. After receiving Council’s approval, construction should begin this fall. Sanitary Sewer and Storm Sewer Line Inspections and Repairs – In February and March of this year the Borough cleaned and televised a total of 15,904 feet of sanitary sewer pipe, tested 337 pipe joints, made 24, two-foot repairs and 6, four-foot repairs, cut roots in four laterals and used 375 gallons of grout. The Borough spent $77,000 for this project in areas which were last inspected in 2006. NOTE TO SIR SPEEDY 5. Kenhorst Park – Council has taken initial steps to create a plan to enlarge the existing parking area at the park by expanding into the old tennis court area. Preliminary design indicates that the new parking area will accommodate 36 parking spaces which will alleviate some of the parking congestion when the Mifflin Area Youth Baseball Association and Mifflin Broncos youth sports teams are using the fields. Property Maintenance Code Section 304.3 – Premises Identification – This section requires approved address numbers placed to be plainly legible and visible from the street or road fronting the property. For emergency purposes it is also advisable to post address numbers in the rear of the property in such a way as to be clearly visible from the alley. Numbers shall be at least 4 inches high or larger and at least onehalf inch wide. Numbers should not be obstructed in any way. If a house number is posted on your front door and there is a screen or storm door which may obstruct seeing the number from the street, please move the number to a porch post or onto the building so it is clearly visible. Grass Clippings and Debris - Please sweep up all grass clippings that may have blown into the street. If you employ a third party to mow your lawn, make sure they keep the grass clippings in your yard and not in the street. Grass can obstruct the storm drain or contaminate a waterway.
