Aase Haugen Auxiliary Salad Luncheon
We had great results from the
Auxiliary Salad Luncheon in May!
A steady stream of hungry folks
met their match with the endless
array of salads from our Auxiliary
members & members from all our
Member Congregations!
This year, the proceeds from the
Salad Luncheon and Ice Cream
Social were designated to go
toward the purchase of a
whirlpool tub for the residents.
After raising $1,096 toward the
project from the Salad Luncheon,
it was ordered and installed! The
August 16, 2015 Ice Cream Social
proceeds should complete the
purchase! Many thanks to all
who supported this worthy cause
and deepest thanks to the
members of the Auxiliary who
work so hard to make it
successful!
Many thanks goes to St.
Benedict’s Church as well, who
graciously allow the use of their
community room for the event!
Our Auxiliary works tirelessly to
support the residents and
enhance their daily lives. They
also do many unexpected
kindnesses towards the staff as
well. We appreciate all they do
for our residents, our staff and
the whole of Aase Haugen Senior
Services!

CCDI Services Coming to Aase Haugen
The plans for the renovation of
Rivers Neighborhood into the ne
CCDI (Chronic, Confusing or Dementing Illness) Unit at Aase Haugen
Homes are well underway. With minor renovation, Rivers will be divided
into two sections, one with 12
rooms for residents with more advanced dementia symptoms and 13
rooms for those who are more independent with the activities of daily
living.
Applications are being taken now
for staffing positions for the CCDI
unit, with an in-depth, immersive
training planned for up to 14 direct
care staff in August.
The training program will ensure
that all those working in the CCDI
unit have a deep working knowledge
of dementing illnesses, as well as
practical approaches and care options best suited for their particular
needs.
The renovations include adding a
dining/common area and kitchenette
for the Advanced CCDI area, as well
as modifications to the current Assisted Dining area and Nurses Station
Rivers currently has.
Both units will be secure, and
plans are in place to add in many
home-like features and furniture areas to create a warm, homelike atmosphere for the residents living
there.
The Aase Haugen Senior Services
CCDI unit should be opening this fall.
By the end of August, Memory Care
Assisted Living will become an extension of Aase Haugen Assisted Living,
and Tenants of Valley Assisted Living
have first option to move there.
Valley Assisted Living apartments,
once vacated, will be transferred into
Skilled Rehabilitation Suites for the
Nursing Home.
For more information on the
CCDI unit or its services, please contact Brenda Johnson, BSN, DON at
(563)382-3603.
Summer Escapades, Indoors and Out!
We are so grateful for warm weather that each summer, we make the most of it! When it’s nice outside,
we plan Whippy Dip runs (cover), courtyard picnics
(pictured left above)Pictured (l-r) Elaine Frana, Ruth Thompson, Jean Hardy, Nan Gray, Millie Jacobson, Barb
McKenzie, Andrea Hexom, Activities Supervisor, and Joy Rides in our new Coach. When its not so sunny,
we have wonderful people stop in and entertain us. June 29th, we enjoyed Songs from 100 years Ago by
Bill Kuhlman, just in time to
get us in the mood for our
100 year dedication event!
For June Dairy Month, we
even enjoyed some ice cream
served by the Little Miss
Squirts and Little Mr. Herdsman (pictured right above) at
Aase Haugen Homes!

Vision: Aase Haugen Senior Services, sensitive to the future
of our community, will respond with creative exceptional care
that inspires independence, hope and compassion. In
harmony with the vision of our benevolent founder, Aase
Haugen, we will always be here to serve, thanks to the
nurturing and dedication of our caring community.
We Believe: Everyone in the Aase Haugen Community is
FAMILY; including those we serve directly, their families, our
staff, benefactors and volunteers.
People who are in need because of illness, injury or frailty of
body, mind and spirit are especially DESERVING of CARE.
All God’s people are deserving of care, love, compassion and
RESPECT regardless of their resources.
Our Christian identity and heritage create a calling to
maximize all resources to ensure that those entrusted to us
are provided ministries of HEALING and HOPE.

The Aase Haugen Home, now South Bear School, was as
stately and impressive as ever, adding to the spirit of the day.
Aase Haugen friends and family enjoyed congratulations from
several prominent speakers as well. The program was introduced by Lane, Dean and Gerry Schwarz, who warmly welcomed
people to their School and reflected on our good fortune at the
paths traveled by so many to bring us to this moment in time.

term care in Iowa. “We are light years from where we were in
senior care even 20 years ago,” Ackerson noted, adding. “Look what we have
done, what this community has done! Look what you have achieved!”
All spoke highly of the dedication of the staff and quality of care provided at Aase
Haugen over the past 100 years. “As great as the first gift of land, and support
from the area churches, the real gift continues today in the care and support residents receive from the staff at Aase Haugen Senior Services,” expressed Breitbach.
He also read a proclamation from Gov. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Reynolds recognizing Aase Haugen Senior Services on our 100th Anniversary as a “great asset for
our state.”
Shannon Strickler, Exec. Director of LeadingAge, noted that Administrator Virgil Hougen and Aase Haugen Homes was one of 13 founding members of the
