Dear Rising Middle School and Upper School Parents,
Once again the math department will be using Khan Academy for summer assignments for 6th
grade, Pre-algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Advanced Math/Trig. These assignments are
required and will be the first grade for next year. Khan Academy is a website that offers
instructional videos and practice problems. Teachers will assign topic areas based on the math
course your child is enrolled in. Students will be able to log in from anywhere to view the
instructional videos and complete math problems. Teachers will be able to monitor students’
progress as a “coach” and thus be in contact over the summer with any student who may be
struggling.
Teachers will show students how to access Khan Academy before the end of the year. Each
student will need a gmail account. This account is free and students should choose addresses
that are easily recognizable to teachers, i.e., first initial last [email protected]. Please assist your
child in setting up their account by Friday, June 1.
The math department is very excited to continue with this program. It was a huge success last
year! We hope that the students will find it more “user-friendly” and parents will find the
universal access easier to accommodate on vacations. Please feel free to check out the site at
www.khanacademy.com.
Students who will be taking Stats, Pre-Calc, Calculus, and/or AP Calculus next year will be
given an assignment from another source. Teachers will hand these out prior to exam week.

Instructions for Khan Academy:
 Each student should set up a gmail account at www.gmail.com. The address should be
their first initial last name @gmail.com. Some students may already have a gmail
account that is recognizable – they may use it.
 Once the gmail account is established, students should go to www.khanacademy.org and
log in by clicking the google sign.
 Once logged in, proceed to the “Coach” tab and add the following as a coach:
o For 6th Grade: [email protected]

For Pre-Algebra: [email protected]
o For Algebra 1: [email protected]
o For Geometry: [email protected].
o For Algebra 2: [email protected]
o For Advanced Math/Trig: [email protected]
 From here students may proceed to watch videos or complete the assigned exercises.
These exercises will be posted on the school website.
