HOW THE CLASS WORKS
GETTING STARTED:
∎ The first two assignments in MyMathLab are due on the first Tuesday of the semester.
∎ There is a free temporary access code so everyone can start on time!
∎ MyMathLab enrollment instructions are on page 6 and Blackboard at https://portal.tulsacc.edu .
∎ MyMathLab is at http://www.MyMathLab.com ; instructions to proceed are on the first page.
EMAIL: Email is the fastest and preferred method of individual
communication. I check email frequently 11:00 am -10:00 pm.
An email response should be received within 24 hours, if not check
the available space in your email box and then resend your email.
TEACHING METHODS: Help is available 24/7 in the form of
videos, multimedia textbook, animations, help buttons, and tech
support. Take assignments at least one day early; waiting until the
last minute makes you very vulnerable to technical and personal
problems which may cost you points. To maintain equal access
for all students, I do not extend due dates for individuals. However
a few grades will be dropped at the end of the semester to help
with emergencies; use them sparingly as life can be unpredictable.
Homework is an interactive way to learn the material. It has links
to videos, the multimedia textbook and other media. Help buttons
include “Ask My Instructor” which will email your current question
to me along with your comments. After using any help button work
another question using the “Similar Exercise” button and keep
practicing until you can work the problem without any assistance
or notes. A minimum score of 80% is required to access the
corresponding quiz. Raise your homework score by only reworking
the problems you missed. Homework is available after its due
date for 90% credit on the individual problems completed late.
Quizzes are a good way to see if you understand the material
and to reevaluate your study habits. Quizzes have 5 -7 problems
randomly chosen from the homework without help buttons. To
open a quiz a minimum 80% score on the corresponding
homework is required. Quizzes may be taken three times with
only the highest score counting. Review quizzes with help buttons
immediately after submission and before closing. Quizzes will not
be available after their due date. If you do not submit a quiz after
starting it email me immediately to reset it for you. Your five
lowest quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester.
Chapter Reviews are a study guide to prepare for the test. They
are worth points, may be taken repeatedly, and require a minimum
70% score to access the corresponding test, no exceptions!
Closing instead of submitting allows you to reopen the review and
continue working where you left off. After submitting, review it with
help buttons before closing. Chapter Reviews are due the day
before the test and will not be available after their due date.
Study Guides for Tests are optional and only have the types
of problems YOU missed on the Chapter Reviews. This is a good
way to focus on your trouble spots.
Tests require a minimum 70% Chapter Review score to open.
Tests provide an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding
of the chapter material and when to apply it. Tests are timed and
once started must be completed. Tests may be taken twice with
only the higher score counting. Even though tests may be taken at
home, they are still "real" tests so use the “Honor System” (without
notes, book, or help from another person). Review tests immediately after submission and before closing. Once started if your test
is not submitted you will be locked out of all assignments, contact
me immediately! Avoid problems, plan ahead, take tests early!
2
Exam Preps are a study guide to prepare you for the exam.
They are worth points, may be taken repeatedly, and require
a minimum 60% score to access the corresponding exam.
Closing instead of submitting allows you to reopen it and
continue working where you left off. After submitting, review it
with help buttons before closing. Watch the due dates for the
Exam Preps since they will not be available after their due date.
PROCTORED EXAMS must be taken with supervision in a
testing center. Exams demonstrate your understanding of the
course material and when to apply it. Exams are multiple choice
and may only be taken once. They have a 1 hour and 50 minute
time limit and once started must be worked on continuously until
completed. Calculators may be used and scratch paper will be
provided; CAS calculators are not allowed such as TI - 89 or
TI - Nspire. The MyMathLab “EXAMS” button has exams, exam
information, and designated TCC testing sites. If you live at a
distance, contact me at least two weeks before the exam to find a
testing site for you at a college or university in your area; you are
responsible for any fees at these other colleges. Plan ahead to
avoid problems! Take exams early! Exams are worth a
significant amount of points!
Division Rules for all College Algebra Classes: The common
final will be comprehensive utilizing MyMathLab. Students may
not use their own books, notes, or scratch paper during this
exam. To assist students in preparing for these exams, the
following policies have been established.
1. The common final will be the only exam for this class
given during finals week.
2. Each student should receive instructions for accessing
a sample final.
3. Students may use a calculator. Calculators may not be
shared and no other devices may be used.
4. Scratch paper and a list of standard formulas will be
supplied with the College Algebra Final Exam.
5. To earn a grade of A, B, or C in this course, the department
requires that you must also score at least 50% on the
common final exam. Any exceptions to this must be
appealed by your instructor to the Associate Dean.
SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS:
Assignments in MyMathLab will be graded when submitted.
Credit will not be given for answers typed incorrectly or in the
wrong format; pay attention to the blue print designating answers.
Grades are accessible in the “View Your Grades” button.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKE-UP WORK: To keep the
class equitable for all students, due dates for individuals will
not be extended for any reason. Plan on taking assignments
at least one day early to prevent loss of points due to last minute
emergencies! Homework may be taken late for 90% credit; all
other assignments will NOT be available after their due date.
Assignments not completed on time receive a grade of zero.
One lowest test and five lowest quiz scores will be dropped at
the end of the semester. The final exam score completed by
its due date may be used again to replace the midterm score
if it is higher.
GRADES: Your current average in the class is always available and accurate in the “View Your Grades” button. Click on the “Show
Overall Score” button on the top. You can also check your grades on individual assignments however notice the default is only for
assignments over the last two weeks; you may use the buttons to change the scope of assignments viewed. Ignore the total points
earned as this is inaccurate until after the final. For assignments with multiple attempts only the highest score counts.
EVALUATION TECHNIQUES: School of Science and Mathematics for TCC: Proctored exams and quizzes (which includes the final exam) will comprise a required minimum of 50% of the overall course grade for on-line, blended, or campus math courses. A proctored event
is an exam or quiz that takes place under the direct supervision of an instructor or an instructor-approved proctor.
I do not give grades, you earn them. Your grade represents your level of math knowledge demonstrated during the semester. It does not
represent your worth as a person, your personality or intellect. You will determine your grade by two criteria: your score on the Final Exam
and the number of points you earn. The Final Exam is a gateway test and you must answer at least half the questions correctly to be
eligible to earn an A, B, or C for the course; considering 50% is an F, it is not a very high standard.
If your Final Exam score is equal to or greater than 50% then your grading scale is:
Grade:
Points:
A
2000 - 1800
B
1799 - 1600
C
1599 - 1400
D
1399 - 1200
F

If your Final Exam score is less than 50% then your grading scale is:

“CLASSROOM” ETIQUETTE/ NETIQUETTE: Open and mutually respectful communication of varied opinions, beliefs, and
perspectives during classroom or online discussion encourages the free exchange of ideas that is essential to higher learning and
to the ability to learn from each other. Remember kindness is a virtue! Use of any electronic device is at the discretion of the instructor.

Be respectful, it makes everyone’s day better and reflects well on you.

Facial signals, body language, and voice intonation are not available to interpret email, so it is easier to
give the wrong impression. Offensive communications may not have been proofread for tone and are
not intended to give offense. Please give the sender the benefit of the doubt.

Stay on topic and within the scope of the course material.

Use clear and concise language. Use sentences and avoid texting shortcuts.

Use correct grammar and spelling in all college communications. Spell check is available in email.

Use color and fonts that are easily readable.

Avoid using ALL CAPITAL LETTERS as they can be perceived as the equivalent of yelling. You may format your text for emphasis.

Use TCC email or the email features available inside of Blackboard or MyMathLab. If these resources are not available, and
you must email from an outside account, clearly identify yourself and your class; also be aware delivery may be significantly delayed.

Converse with others the same way you would in a traditional classroom. Harassment will not be tolerated.

Refer to the Student Policies and Resources Handbook for general classroom expectations at
http://www.tulsacc.edu/student-resources/student-handbook .

ATTENDANCE AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
ATTENDANCE: Students receiving benefits from government agencies must adhere to policies stipulated by the specific
agency. Attendance is measured by completion of course assignments by their due dates. Math is a long distance race
not a sprint, pace yourself! Students who fail to complete an assignment with at least a 60% score in any two week period may be
administratively withdrawn.
TIME: Students who have successfully completed this class have spent an average of 6 hours a week working online in the course!
Time will vary based on your previous knowledge and aptitude. Participation in this course via the Internet is the responsibility of
the student. Due dates will not be extended for individual students. All assignments may be taken early! Taking assignments early
provides time to get additional help, access another computer when tech problems occur, or work around a personal issue.
NOTE: It is your responsibility to complete assignments on time or early! I will be contacting you throughout the semester by email.
Blackboard and MyMathLab are available 24/7 with occasional down times for updates and technical corrections.
What You Should Understand About Internet Classes

The responsibility of teaching and learning falls heavily on YOU.

Be realistic about the amount of time required to do the course work, 6 hours a week or more, REALLY!

Schedule study times and have a plan to complete assignments at least one day early!

Waiting until the last minute to complete assignments makes you very vulnerable to technical and personal problems and
does not allow for time to get additional help or to access another computer if needed.

ASK for help when you need help, immediately don’t wait for a test!

Educational research has shown study times spread over several days work best so I recommend going online at least 3
days a week, everyday is best.

Check your TCC email often and communicate with me as needed.

Getting behind is frequently the death blow to success. If you don't have time to keep-up, it will be even harder to find
time to catch-up.

Read the syllabus, you must know how the class works to use it to your best advantage!

Read and follow instructions carefully and immediately ask questions needed for clarification.

Internet classes require that students be self-motivated and self-disciplined.

If you have questions about internet classes take the Blackboard Learning Orientation at
http://sites.google.com/site/blackboardstudentorientation/home\
ONLINE IS MORE FLEXIBLE, NOT EASIER
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Find the domain and range of relations and functions; both graphically and algebraically.

Perform operations on functions, including compositions.

Analyze polynomial equations and inequalities; both graphically and algebraically.

Perform matrix operations.

Apply the properties of logarithms to solve exponential and logarithmic equations.


TCC POLICIES
ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWL for NON-PARTICIPATION:
Students will be withdrawn from the class with a grade of WN
for non-participation if they have not participated in the class
during the first week for 8-week classes and first two weeks
for 16-week classes . For this class that means completing
a math assignment in MyMathLab. The college
reimbursement schedule also applies to online classes.
DISABILITY RESOURCES: It is the policy and practice of
Tulsa Community College to create inclusive learning
environments. Accommodations for qualifying students in
compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act are available. To request
accommodations, contact the Education Access Center (EAC)
at [email protected] or call (918) 595-7115 (Voice). Deaf and
hard of hearing students may text (918) 809-1864. Click on
these links for TCC Disability Resources, Blackboard Accessibility Information and MyMathLab Accessibility FAQ . Links

COURSE WITHDRAWAL: The deadline to withdraw from a
course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Contact
the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal
from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit.
Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines at
http://www.tulsacc.edu/programs-courses/academic-calendar .
Students who stop participating in the course and fail to
withdraw may receive a course grade of “F”, which may
have financial aid consequences for the student.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating)
is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or
about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct
is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa
Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts
a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary
action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the
faculty include, but not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful
or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic
dishonesty, a faculty member may:
∎ Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require
the student to complete a substitute assignment or test;
∎ Record a “zero” for the assignment or test in question;
∎ Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from
the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the
class;
∎ Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the
semester.
Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a
student at the administrative level by submitting such a request
to the Dean of Student Services.
Course Drop or Withdrawal: A student who has been found
responsible for academic dishonesty in a course may not drop
or withdraw from the course. If the student processes a drop or
withdrawal from the course, the action will be reversed and the
appropriate grade will be recorded on the student's transcript.
EMAIL: All TCC students receive a designated TCC email
address, for example: [email protected]. All communications to you about TCC and course assignments will be sent
to your TCC email address. You must use TCC email to send
email to, and receive email from, the instructor regarding this
course. To access TCC email go to MyTCC at https://
mytcc.tulsacc.edu . For information about TCC email for
students, click here for TCC IT instructions .
INCLEMENT WEATHER: If extreme weather conditions or
emergency situations arise, TCC gives cancellation notices
to radio and television stations. This information is also
posted on the TCC website at http://www.tulsacc.edu and sent
via TCC Emergency Alerts. Register to receive TCC Alerts
from the MyTCC home page at https://tcc.bbcportal.com/ .
GENERAL EDUCATION GOALS: General Education
courses at TCC ensure that our graduates gain skills,
knowledge, and abilities that comprise a common foundation
for their higher education and a backdrop for their work and
personal lives. TCC’s General Education Goals are:
Communication Skills, Critical Thinking, Empirical Skills,
Teamwork, Personal Responsibility, and Social Responsibility.
INSTITUTIONAL STATEMENT: Each student is responsible
for being aware of the information contained in the TCC
Catalog, the TCC Student Policies & Resources Handbook,
and semester information listed in the class schedule. All
information may be viewed on the TCC website at
http://www.tulsacc.edu/ .
TOBACCO FREE COLLEGE: Tulsa Community College is
a Tobacco Free college in accordance with the Governor’s
Executive Order 2012-01 and Title 63 of the Oklahoma
Statutes, Section 1-1523 which prohibits smoking or the use
of any tobacco products in all public places, in any indoor
workplace, and all vehicles owned by the State of Oklahoma
and all of its agencies and instrumentalities. This Order
includes property leased, rented, or owned by TCC including,
but not limited to, all grounds, buildings, facilities, and parking
lots. Tulsa Community College’s policy includes a tobacco
free environment on all campus and off-campus locations
conducting TCC credit or non-credit classes. The TCC
Campus Police is responsible for ensuring compliance with the
