Introduction
Hi there and thank you so much for deciding to read my eBook. My
name is Rory Havensport and I'm a member of the Outdoors Man team at
www.theoutdoorsman.org
I decided to write this eBook after combining my skills as a qualified
Chemist, Biologist and an avid fisherman. I spent several years studying at one
of the top Universities in the United States before pursuing my career as a
professional fisherman and I've had great success on both fronts.
When I originally decided to become a fisherman, I spent years and
years fishing alongside some of the greatest fishermen of the generation. I
learnt tips and techniques that you can only learn outdoors and I'm still
learning on a weekly basis.
I've also taken part in over a dozen fishing tournaments around the
world and made several great friends in the process. It was during these fishing
trips and events that I really honed my skill in making bait that can drive fish of
all species wild.
My knowledge actually comes from my education where I learnt to
evaluate, process and understand the different properties of chemicals and
ingredients. Soon after I became a fisherman, I discovered that some of the
most popular bait brands on the market aren't half as effective as they claim to
be.
After several failed fishing expeditions I decided to put pen to paper and
develop a collection of bait recipes that trigger the instinctive responses of fish
in order to better improve the chances of a great catch. I'm here to share these
recipes with you in the hopes of bettering your fishing activities and I'm happy
to do so.
So without further ado, let's get to know a little more about the recipes,
the types of fish that they will attract and the ingredients that you'll need for
the best results.
5
A Little Bit About the Recipes
As with most recipes, you can expect to have to use a few different
ingredients to get the desired results. Whilst studying, I got to know quite a bit
about what different vitamins, minerals, chemicals and properties do and how
they work with and against each other.
Because it's important to use natural fish bait while fishing, I calculated
the specific properties of certain foods to better understand how certain traits
are similar to chemicals. We've all heard how chemicals and formulas can be
effective for baiting and catching fish, or animals in general, but what the
companies don't tell you is that a lot of these chemicals are quite harmful to
the environment.
That's one of the main benefits of my fish bait recipes; they are made of
natural foods so they're not going to have a negative effect on the
environment and because they're made of readily available ingredients; you
won't have to spend a ridiculous amount of money on named brands.
Now it's important to say that I've been using these bait recipes for years
and they are very effective. I've seen fishermen going hours without a single
bite, to loading some of my bait on to their hook and seeing their luck turn
around in less than half an hour.
The recipes involve the combination of specific ingredients for their
scent, appearance and other factors which when used together, can trigger the
base instincts of fish from a range of species. What this means is that fish that
avoid the surface will feel the need to go outside of their comfort zone in order
to grab the bait, as well as predatory fish being driven in to a frenzied bloodlust
in the hopes of catching prey.
It's not exactly manipulating the fish; it's more a case of leading them to
react in a certain instinctive way. Certain food combinations will emulate the
scent of pheromones that female fish secrete while looking for a mate, while
others will lead fish to believe that what they have in front of them is an
irresistible meal. It works in the same way as chilli and chocolate; the pair
sound like completely opposites, but when combined they actually
complement each other very well.
6
Because of the effectiveness of several of the recipes, I've found that
certain fishing officials, especially tournament officials, might not always be
too keen on their use. It isn't that they are dangerous in any way; it's literally
because of their potency and effectiveness. It's what's called the 'unfair
advantage'. Personally, I don't see the problem with using effective bait
systems to catch fish in higher numbers, but I can see how it would be unfair in
a tournament setting.
If you're ever unsure of whether or not you'd be allowed to use the bait
system, just refer to your event's guidelines for clarification. These baits come
under home-formulas, so unless these formulas are restricted then you're free
to use them. Just don't expect your fellow fishermen to be overjoyed!
So with all of the above in mind, let's get to know the recipes. I've
broken them in to categories as some of them are better suited to specific fish
than others. Simply refer to the sections relating to 'carp', 'bass' or 'catfish' and
so on for species-specific bait, or if you prefer formulas that appeal to a wide
range of fish then the general baits are your best option.
7
Fish Bait Recipes
Here's where the recipes begin. You'll find a great range of versatile
recipes, so feel free to use them however you deem worthy. The sections are
there to guide your bait decision; as specific flavor and scent combinations will
be much more effective for certain types of fish, but that's not to say that they
won't be suitable for fishing in general. The recipes are simply a finely tuned
composition of ingredients that are guaranteed to be effective for bank, boat,
lake and sea fishing.
Carp
Carp are day time scavengers and nocturnal hunters, so these recipes
focus on triggering the alert response that carp feel when they spot prey.
There's also a combination of pheromone triggering scents most commonly
associated with mating season too, so carp won't be able to resist the unique
blends.
The Carp Catalyst
This one will involve a trip down to the grocery store, but the results of your
effort will be astounding. This bait works great during the day and over the
course of the evening too. It's also potent enough to be traceable by carp in
8
the roughest waters so river fishing is ideal. Here's what you'll need:
- 50g whey protein (chocolate)
- 25g fried red onion
- 1 egg yolk (raw)
- 100g mince meat (lamb or pork - raw)
- 10g beetroot (cooked)
Press your ingredients together and store in a pot or tub, making sure to keep
your bait air tight and feel free to freeze it for use at a later date; just be sure
to properly defrost it before use. If you've been close enough to smell carp
eggs, you'll notice that their scent is much more similar to raw meat than fish.
This recipe replicates that scent as fish eggs are a big part of carp diet.
TIP - if the bait feels too sticky or wet, add more whey protein at 10g intervals.

Carpe Diem
This recipe is one of the most effective recipes that I've come up with and my
carp record is currently 4 in 60 minutes, but a friend of mine beat my score
using this bait recently by catching 5 carp:
- 45g mild curry powder (korma is ideal)
- 50g crushed banana
- 1 or 2 raw egg yolks
- 60g spinach (boiled)
Press your ingredients together until you have a fine paste - the density should
be similar to toothpaste. This recipe will stay fresh in the fridge for at least 4
days but I've frozen and then defrosted it over the space of a month with great
results too. This recipe emulates the scent of dying prey, as well as the scent of
algae which is a source of nutrition for carp.

Carp Supreme (Unfair Advantage Recipe)
This is one of my favorite carp bait recipes and it has proven to be hugely
effective again and again. The recipe mimics the scent of pheromones during
mating season and is strong enough to overpower the real scent of
pheromones, so it's great for use all year round, as well as breeding season:
- 3 raw egg yolks
- 150g flour
- 1 peeled avocado (without core)
- 25g bacon or ham meat and juice (raw - 2 components)
One of the main tricks to this recipe is how the bacon/ ham is treated. You'll
want to press it and collect the juice separately to the meat itself. The chemical
compounds within the meat will react with the elements within the avocado to
create a scent similar to that which female carp emit during breeding season.
Once you have your bacon/ ham juice pressed, you can crush the meat and
add it to the mixture last, so that the avocado and juice have time to merge.

Bass
Whether you're after a large trophy bass or several small to medium
sized ones; the recipes below are perfect for stimulating that predatory instinct
present within all bass, while triggering the endorphins associated with
breeding too.
Back to Bass-ics (Unfair Advantage Recipe)
Bass are predators by nature, but they will eat pretty much anything that can
fit in to their mouths. If it's that inedible, they'll simply regurgitate it. This
recipe will trigger the predatory instincts in larger bass or all sized bass if you're
fishing in breeding season specifically:
- 2.19 fl. oz/ 65ml tuna brine (from a tin)
- 40g crushed beetroot (cooked)
- 50g iron nutrient powder
- 115g flour
Once you've combined all of your ingredients, you'll want to store the formula
in an air tight container and freeze if required. This recipe is hugely effective
during the morning and throughout the day, but is even better for night
fishing. I landed my biggest largemouth in July 2014 thanks to this bait.

The Bass Breaker
Every fisherman has, or will try to catch a trophy worthy bass at some point.
Here's my formula that triggers both the prey drive and reproductive instincts
of bass that will have them swarming around your bait:
- 70g crushed celery
- 15g iron nutrient powder
- 8 to 10g crushed green olives without pips
- 90g flour
The celery and olive components emulate the scent of a female bass'
reproductive hormones, while the iron powder trails the current with the scent
of blood. Once pressed together, place your bait inside a plastic container with
a lid to keep it fresh. You can store it in a fridge or freeze it for long term use.
TIP - if the bait feels too wet, add a little more flour in intervals of 5 to 10g until
your formula reaches a good consistency.

Bass Bonanza
If you're looking to attract several bass like moths to a flame, then this is the
recipe for you. It will often draw in several bass in well populated areas, so it's
great if you have more than 1 rod:
- 75g iron nutrient powder
- 80g raw tuna steak/ fillet (oil and brine are preferred to tinned tuna in water)
- 25-30g banana peel/ skin
- 95g self raising flour
- 15g butter (melted and cooled)
Combine your ingredients in any order and leave the formula to sit in the
fridge over night. Banana skins contain high levels of magnesium which react
with the acidity in tuna to create the same scent that a distressed fish emits
12
when frightened. This scent is typically associated with easy prey, so bass up to
60 yards away will come in for the kill.
TIP - if the mixture feels too oily or sticky, add more self raising flour in 10g
intervals.

Catfish
Catfish might seem like a docile species, but they are actually fierce
predators that have been known to exist on a diet of their own species. The
following recipes play on their innate instincts and trigger their reactions:
Catfish Got the Cream
It's not just cats that have a thing for milk and cream; the chemical
components can cause catfish to leave their bottom dwelling lairs and head for
the source of the scent. Let's take a look at this great catfish bait:
- 1.69fl. oz/ 50ml full fat double-cream
- 175g whey protein (chocolate)
- 1.01 fl. oz/ 30ml juice from raw meat (beef, lamb, pork)
- 45g white rice (cooked)
Once you've prepared your ingredients, press them to form a paste and store
the formula in a sealable container. The bait will keep for about 4 days in the
fridge at low temperature, but for extended trips it's a good idea to freeze a
portion and just defrost as you go.

14
Catfish Cannibal
A little known fact about catfish is that they'll actually eat smaller members of
their own species if they swim to close. This recipe triggers that cannibalistic
urge in all catfish and it's even more effective if you sink your bait to their level
with weights:
- 40g spinach (boiled)
- 2.19 fl. oz/ 65ml tuna brine (from a tin)
- 15g crushed olive paste (black, without pip)
- 0.16 fl.oz/ 5ml balsamic vinegar
- 5g peppermint (dried, crushed)
- 40g flour
Combine all of your ingredients until you have a moderately sticky paste. The
scent of the spinach will trigger the feeding response of the catfish, while the
combination of tuna brine, balsamic vinegar and peppermint trigger the
predatory instinct by causing both hunger and intrigue.

The Catfish Countdown (Unfair Advantage Recipe)
If there's one thing that catfish can't resist, it's the scent of blood. This recipe is
one of the most, if not the most, effective catfish catching recipe that I've used
and it stimulates aggression, arousal and hunger at the same time for a
combination that's irresistible to catfish:
- 75g iron nutrient powder
- 35g spinach (boiled)
- 1.01 fl. oz/ 30ml juice from raw meat (beef, lamb, pork)
- 15g cooked bacon/ ham (pressed to paste)
- 0.16 fl.oz/ 5ml bee's honey
- 55g flour
Once you've mixed your ingredients, make sure to store the bait formula in an
air tight container and keep it in the fridge before use. It's important to keep
15
the temperature of this bait cool initially to allow the chemical components of
the ingredients to infuse properly.

Recipes for Predatory Fish
These recipes are ideal for predatory fish in general and stimulate the
instinctive reactions associated with a hunt. Whether you're after deep sea
tuna and marlin, or lake dwelling pike and tiger fish; these recipes focus on
triggering a fishes' prey drive until you have them hooked.
The Prey Drive (Unfair Advantage Recipe)
This recipe can be used during the day or night and is ideal for catching
medium to large sized predatory fish that actively hunt their prey:
- 90g iron nutrient powder
- 2.19 fl. oz/ 65ml juice from raw meat (beef, lamb, pork)
- 40g cooked bacon/ ham (pressed to paste)
- 40g self raising flour
- 70g raw tuna steak/ fillet
Once you have your ingredients, press them to form a thick paste. You can
freeze the bait, but be sure to defrost it properly before use. This bait also
works well if warmed through and then cast in to water at a lower
temperature to emulate a live animal.
__________________________________________________
Hunter Killer (Unfair Advantage Recipe)
This is a great recipe for stealth hunters that take their prey by surprise. It
mimics the scent emitted by a dying or wounded animal; just be sure to allow
your line to sit fairly close to the surface, no deeper than 3m to 4m:
- 120g tuna steak/ fillet
- 75g chicken steak/ fillet (cooked but not crispy)
- 35g beetroot (cooked, crushed)
16
- 110g whey protein powder (unflavored)
- 3 egg yolks (raw)
You'll want to press your meat ingredients in to a paste before adding them to
the rest of the components. Allow to cool in the fridge over night and then
warm through before use (30 seconds in the microwave or a little time in the
sun will do). Just be sure to keep your container sealed and air tight to keep
the ingredients fresh throughout use. You can also freeze this formula if you
intend to use smaller amounts at a time.
TIP - This bait appeals to fish that attack suddenly from below, like pike, marlin
and sharks. It's a good idea to brace for the impact which can come as a
surprise.
__________________________________________________
General Effective Fish Bait Recipes
If you're interested in catching a greater amount of fish by enticing them
to your bait, then these recipes are definitely for you. They're much more
effective than several of the leading brands formulas and I use most of these
on a weekly basis for targeting a broader range of fish:
The Hormone Hound
Triggering a fishes' hormones is one of the most effective ways of catching fish
and this recipe does exactly that. They'll swarm around your bait until they
realize it's a source of food rather than a mate, but by then their hunger would
have been encouraged several times over thanks to the ingredients:
- 65g flour
- 2 egg yolks (raw)
- 15g crushed olive paste (green, without pip)
- 0.16 fl.oz/ 5ml balsamic vinegar
- 25g cooked bacon or ham (pressed to paste)
Combine your ingredients until you have a mildly solid bait and then store in an
air tight container below room temperature, preferably in a fridge.
17
__________________________________________________
The Feeding Frenzy
This recipe stimulates the hunger instinct within a wide range of fish and I've
often attracted entire shoals of small to medium sized fish with this
combination of ingredients:
- 25g chicken breast (cooked but not crispy)
- 60g flour
- 0.16 fl. oz/ 5ml juice from raw meat (beef, lamb, pork)
- 10g cinnamon powder
The first thing that you'll need to do is press your chicken breast to a mediumfine paste. Add the rest of the ingredients and then merge them together.
Allow the bait to sit for a few hours in the fridge and then re-heat before use
for maximum effectiveness.
__________________________________________________
The Hypnotist (Unfair Advantage Recipe)
If you're looking for a recipe that draws fish like moths to a flame, then The
Hypnotist is the one for you. It releases a set of scents that replicate
pheromones secreted while fish are mating and it's a great way to draw fish in
for both hook and net catches:
- 3 egg yolks (raw)
- 1 peeled aubergine/ egg plant (medium size - pressed to paste)
- 45g brown rice (boiled)
- 65g self raising flour
- 0.16 fl.oz/ 5ml juice from bacon
Combine your ingredients and store the bait in an air tight container when not
in use. You can freeze the formula and defrost as required.
