Course Description
World History and English 10 are yearlong courses. We will “block” these classes, which means
that the courses will be taught as one interdisciplinary course. We will study the politics,
economics, cultures, geography, and literature of various time periods and regions. Most
assignments will count towards both a World History grade and an English 10 grade! The
curriculum also includes the study of current events and completion of community service hours.
Please note: Enrollment in a yearlong class is a commitment for the entire school year. Requests
for changes must include a conference with the parent, student, and teacher.
Texts
> World History: The Modern Era
> SpringBoard English Language Arts Grade 10
Please note: Many textbooks are issued through the JDHS Library's textbook management
system. If a textbook is checked out through the JDHS Library, it must be returned in the same
condition at the end of the course or unit of study. Failure to return a book or damage to a book
may result in a monetary fine based on the value of the textbook and restricted access to
PowerSchool.
Materials to Bring to Class
> Binder and dividers, 3-subject notebook, pen
> Google account
Your binder may be used for other classes. Your notebook will be used for journaling activities
and notes and is to be used only for this class. I will collect the notebook periodically.
Course Syllabus
A course syllabus will be provided as a separate document.
1
Standards
This course will be taught to district standards and district curriculum. The Juneau School
District curricular information may be reviewed using the Juneau School District website under
the District – Teaching and Learning Support - Curriculum menu item:
http://www.juneauschools.org. The NEW Alaska State Standards can be found on the Alaska
Department of Education and Early Development website: http://www.eed.state.ak.us/standards/.
Grades and Method of Evaluation
Grading follows the policy adopted by the Juneau School District Board of Education (Board
Policy # 5420R). As per board policy, semester grades represent the cumulative progress of
students.
A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89%
C = 70% - 79%
D = 60% - 69%
F = 0% - 60%
“INC” = Incomplete
You are graded on a point system. You earn points for class activities, homework, presentations,
simulations, projects, quizzes, and tests. A scoring guide will be provided with most
assignments. You will earn a respectable grade if you attend class regularly, participate actively,
and complete assignments thoughtfully. Extra credit is extra and is in addition to required
coursework. It is only offered to students who have completed all assignments.
PowerSchool is the system used to display grades and work progress. I am committed to
updating student records weekly at a minimum, recognizing the importance of a live-time
feedback system for parents and students. Please ensure that you AND your family have the
login information to access and use this system regularly in partnership with me.
Academic Dishonesty (from the JDHS student handbook)
Academic dishonesty or “cheating” does not allow for any type of true analysis and is not
tolerated. Cheating includes, but is not limited to:
1. Procuring, possessing, using, or distributing test, quizzes, answer keys, teacher manuals or
teacher textbooks and similar materials;
2. Any attempt to tamper with or alter a teacher’s record or grades;
3. Representing the work of others as one’s own work, whether the materials are plagiarized
from another student, a published work, or some other source, such as an Internet site;
4. Making use of notes or other memory aids during testing, except for those notes a teacher
specifically authorizes for student use during a particular text or quiz, and;
5. Obtaining or offering unauthorized information regarding tests or assignments.
The academic penalty for all parties involved in cheating is a zero or failing grade for any copied
or plagiarized assignment, exam, or quiz. Students will not be allowed to make-up the work.
Also, the disciplinary penalty for cheating may include an office referral for disciplinary action.
Possession and/or unauthorized distribution of materials or altering a teacher's records call for
severe disciplinary consequences. Repeat offenses could result in loss of credit for an entire
course.
2
Late Work Policy
Honor all deadlines. Homework submitted late may receive an automatic 50% penalty per
department policy. Projects turned in late may receive a 10% penalty for each day they are late.
Class presentations and group projects may not be accepted late for credit. Tests and quizzes
missed due to an unexcused absence will be marked as zero. Extensions may be granted if you
meet with me prior to the deadline.
Absence Policy and Procedures
Know the JDHS Attendance Policy in your student handbook. When you are absent, for
whatever reason, it is your responsibility to acquire, complete, and submit the homework or
projects assigned while you were gone. Each student has an “absent folder” located in the white
filing crate near the door. Check this folder upon your return for any papers that were
distributed. Be sure to also consult the lesson planning calendar on my website and ask
classmates to share their notes or explain directions to you. Work missed during an excused
absence may be made up without penalty if it is done so within the same number of days you
were absent (example: 3 days excused = 3 days to make up the assignment without losing any
credit). Work missed during unexcused absences is subject to the above Late Work Policy.
Resources and Extra Help
I will make every effort to respond to e-mail or phone messages within one school day. I will do
my best to make students aware of my daily schedule and to provide extra assistance when
needed (see office hours above). Students and parents are encouraged to make appointments
ahead of time. Students may also receive extra help through the JDHS Learning Center located
in the school library and should consult my website for course documents and daily lessons.
Additionally, you are expected to attend enrichment if your grade falls below a C in this class.
Hall Passes
I will issue each student 4 hall passes per semester. You may redeem a pass for a visit to the
bathroom, water fountain, or locker. The passes may not be used during a class lecture or during
a test. Additionally, passes may not be used during the first 10 minutes of class or during the last
10 minutes of class. At the end of each semester, you and your classmates may pool together unused passes for a whole-class movie/popcorn party. The cost for this party is 40 passes, so
encourage your classmates to use class time and passing breaks wisely. Unused passes may also
be turned in for extra credit at the end of each semester.
Tardies
Tardies impact your learning and are distracting to others. Excessive tardies will negatively
impact your grade. Please note: Food and drink in this classroom is a privilege. If you are tardy
(for ANY reason—even excused tardies), you lose the privilege of eating and drinking for the
remainder of the period. Arguing, whining, or failure to comply with this rule may result in the
privilege of eating and drinking being revoked for every student.
Electronic Devices
See Classroom Rules. Cell phones, music players, video games, and other electronic devices are
to be silenced and out of sight during class unless I have given specific permission for their use.
3
If an item is confiscated for violation of class rules, it may be retrieved from me on the first
offense. For subsequent offenses the item will be turned over to an administrator for retrieval.
Behavioral Expectations
Classroom PROCEDURES
1. Sharpen your pencil and sit down before the bell rings.
2. Maintain a safe, respectful, and productive environment.
3. Follow directions the first time they are given.*
4. Wait for the teacher to dismiss the class (not the bell).
Classroom RULES
1. Silence your electronic devices and leave them in your pockets or backpacks.
2. Place trash in the trashcan—do not throw, toss, shoot, dunk, etc.
3. Do not nag, whine, argue, or complain—do what you are asked.*
4. Follow all school rules.
Please note: You are expected to adhere to JDHS policies, as outlined in the Student Handbook,
at all times. Classroom policies may include more specific requirements, but they cannot be
relaxed beyond the minimums as set forth in the Student Handbook.
*Arguing
I do not accept arguing or defiant behavior as an effective use of class time. If you disagree
with a decision I have made, or if you feel I have treated you unfairly, you may meet with me
privately after class. Arguing with me will automatically result in 15 minutes of lunchtime
detention.
Consequences and Rewards
CONSEQUENCES for Choosing to NOT Follow the Procedures and Rules
1. Warning or confiscation of prohibited item
2. Reminder + lunchtime detention
3. Reminder + lunchtime detention + phone call home
4. Reminder + lunchtime detention + phone call home + referral to an administrator
Please note: Any action that endangers others, seriously interferes with the learning process, or is
significantly disrespectful to staff or students may result in immediate removal from the
classroom and/or direct referral to an administrator, thus by-passing above consequences.
REWARDS for Choosing to Follow the Procedures and Rules
1. Productive, stress-free, and enjoyable work environment (daily)
2. Positive phone call, e-mail, or note home (random)
In an effort to decrease our use of paper resources, JDHS is making our Academic and
Discipline Plans available electronically. Please note: Each plan requires a signature
form to be returned to each teacher. These forms will be given to students in class.
