See Figure 3. 4.0 DESIGN AND INSTALLATION 4.1 Design: 1.0 EVALUATION SCOPE Compliance with the following codes: ® 2015 International Building Code (IBC) ® 2015 International Residential Code (IRC) Property evaluated: Structural 2.0 USES Rhino Engineered Steel Headers are used as headers over opening in wood framed walls. The Rhino Engineered Steel Headers may be used under the IRC when an engineered design is submitted in accordance with IRC Section R301.1.3. 3.0 DESCRIPTION The Rhino Engineered Steel Header (header) is a factory fabricated header made up of cold-formed steel chord and web members. The webs are an upside-down multiple “V” shape. The chords are a hat section. The chords and webs are fabricated from steel conforming to ASTM A653 SS Grade 50 and have a G90 galvanized coating. The headers have 0.15-inch-diameter (3.8 mm) guide holes for nails for the attachment of the header to the wood framing. The headers are available in three models; the SH3, SH4, and SH5. The maximum allowable loads for the Rhino Engineered Steel Header based on strength and deflection are as shown in Table 1. 4.2 Installation: The Rhino Engineered Steel Headers must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s published installation instructions and this report. A copy of the manufacturer’s published installation instructions must be available on the jobsite at all times during installation. The complete header consists of a minimum of double 2-by-4 wood top plate, single 2-by-4 king studs at each end of the header, single 2-by-4 bottom chord, single 2-by-4 trim studs at each end of the header, and the SH3, SH4, or SH5. The wood must be a minimum of stud grade sprucepine-fir. The SH3, SH4, or SH5 is fastened to the wood framing with 0.148-inch-diameter (3.8 mm) by 1.5-inch (38 mm) nails. The minimum bending yield strength (fyb) of the nails must be 90,000 psi (620 MPa). A nail is required in each of the pre-punched holes provided in the SH3, SH4, or SH5. 5.0 CONDITIONS OF USE 3.1 SH3: The Rhino Engineered Steel Header described in this report complies with, or is a suitable alternative to what is specified in, those codes listed in Section 1.0 of this report, subject to the following conditions: The SH3 is 9.12 inches (232 mm) high, 3.5 inches (89 mm) wide, with a top chord that is 20.59 inches (523 mm) long and a bottom chord that is 39 inches (991 mm) long. The 5.1 Installation must comply with the requirements of the applicable code, this report and the manufacturer’s published installation instructions.
