Australia is the world’s sixth largest country, the world’s largest island and the only inhabited island continent. The land was first inhabited 40,000 years ago by the first ancestors of the current indigenous people of Australia. Western colonisation began in 1788 when the English landed the First Fleet of convicts in Sydney Harbour. In the decades that followed, other cities were settled around the nation’s coastline. People from many different nations have settled in Sydney. As a result there are many cultural activities and cuisines to choose from. The temperature ranges from cool to hot, and even in winter Sydneysiders enjoy sport and other outdoor activities. The main public transport consists of buses and trains, and there are also ferries which travel the Harbour. TAFE NSW campuses can be found in every part of Sydney, from the inner city to the Blue Mountains.
