Saudi Construction Sector Remains Unaffected
by Global Crisis
A recent study conducted by Proleads Global “Insights Saudi
Arabia: An Investigation into the Current and Future State of the
Civil Building Construction Industry” concluded that the Saudi
Arabian civil building construction industry has not been much
affected by the economic crisis, if affected at all.
Cash flow in the Saudi Arabian construction industry grew
throughout 2008 and stabilized in 2009, and is expected to
maintain current levels throughout 2010, with slight growth in the
commercial and retail practices.
More than 720 projects with a total budget of more than $430
billion across commercial and retail, education and healthcare,
leisure and entertainment, and residential sectors are currently in
the pipeline confirming Saudi Arabia’s position as the Middle East’s
leader in the construction industry.
Whereas other Arabian Gulf markets continue to seek stability, the
Saudi Arabian construction industry will continue building from a
position of strength.
Saudi Arabia remains one of the most active construction markets in
the world as it develops its infrastructure to meet domestic demands
with more than 720 active projects under construction.
Over US$ 400 billion budgeted on large
infrastructure projects for the coming 5 years
About the Saudi
Construction Market Today:
• 2.9 million housing units are needed
by 2015 at a projected cost of US$ 180
billion and 4 million units by 2020

The construction sector in Saudi Arabia is the largest and fastest growing
market in the Gulf region. Ongoing construction projects in the Gulf are valued
at $1.9 trillion (SR7.1 trillion), and one-quarter of the developments are located
in Saudi Arabia. A number of positive economic, demographic, and geographic
factors, as well as continued government support, have combined to help Saudi
Arabia weather the current economic downturn better than most of its Gulf
neighbors. According to industry experts, in the first two quarters of 2009, 34
contracts, each with a value over $500 million (SR1.9 billion), were awarded.
These contracts represent a combined worth of $50.1 billion (SR187.9 billion).
• US$ 40 billion are projected to be
spent on “smart buildings” in the

billion to start the construction of
4 new universities.

some US$ 16.3 billion (17% of
government budget) for a premier
healthcare sector
• Transportation received some US$ 8.3
billion to construct 6400 KM of new
highways and roads
• US$ 150 billion is the expected
capital injection operated by the
private sector on real estate
projects till 2012
